Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread

About as strange a game as you'll ever see. It is an important win for the Bears, but wow it's amazing how bad the NFC North is. I (among others) was clearly wrong about Kyle Orton though, he looks great. Oh, and HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS? Of all the hyped teams coming into an NFL season in recent memory, they are starting to look like they might be one of the biggest flops. Blown out at St. Louis? Even without Romo, that's pathetic. The Chargers lose again as well, speaking of flops (although they are only a game and a half out in a division with two horrible teams, so they aren't dead yet). Norv Turner's seat has to be getting pretty warm these days. -
Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays ALCS Thread

QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 10:34 PM) Jesus Christ, if Boston comes back to win this series, I'm going to declare that they have a horseshoe up their ass. Three highly improbable come-from-behind series victories within a span of five years? I'm tired of seeing them in the WS. It's not luck, it's the ability to not collapse under pressure. The Yankees, Indians, and soon to be Rays all completely collapsed under the pressure of trying to close out a series, and Boston has done a superb job of staying loose and taking advantage of it. Fortunately, the 2005 White Sox knew how to close it out against Boston unlike all of these other clowns. -

I think the Missouri offense just didn't show up in the 1st half and wasn't prepared, but what happened to the Missouri defense all night was no fluke. They are just a very poor group, Texas could have put up 70 tonight had they wanted to with little problem. As for some of Gage's comments, Iowa actually is a pretty good team. They really shot themselves in the foot in their losses, but they've improved a lot this year and Shonn Greene (I hope I spelled his name right) is one of the more underrated tailbacks in the nation. Ohio State certainly is a different team with Pryor, and not having Wells at USC obviously hurt them too, but they'd have no shot at the title game with one loss no matter what. The voters have seen what happened to them in the title game the last two years, and their only shot at making it back again really was an undefeated season. Unless they are the only one loss team left a la 2007, their title hopes died in Los Angeles. I can't see them beating Penn State though, even in Columbus. -

Also, impressive win for Ohio State. Michigan State is STILL a joke in big games, and Ohio State is still going to lose to Penn State next week in Columbus, but the Buckeyes deserve credit for their performance today. -

Fraud certainly isn't harsh at this point. They lost at home last week (although to a very good team, but still at home), and they simply aren't ready to play tonight. This Texas outfit is awfully good though, I'll say that much. As for Michigan, how the hell did they lose to Toledo?! I know Michigan is really, really bad this year, but after watching NIU cruise to a 38-7 win over Toledo that could have been worse had NIU wanted it to be, I am amazed that Michigan could really be bad enough to lose to them. Nice win for us though today, we're trying to creep into the bowl picture slowly but surely, but must keep it up next week. -
If I make the obligatory "once you go black, you never go back" caption here, nobody will consider me a racist right?

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 06:22 PM) Firing Savvy makes Kaner Cry. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....onal-times.html Also, did anyone else notice during the press conference that Dale Tallon is trying to mimic the Joe Maddon look? Well you could say Maddon attempted to mimic Dale Tallon in game 5 of the ALCS by doing his job horribly.

I had a few friends tell me that Lou Holtz made some sort of Hitler reference this evening. So, if you see him at all tomorrow (and if he indeed made such a reference, I doubt you will), I would imagine there will be some sort of significant apology made. -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 10:00 PM) What? I assume he means "this team is dead". As for the Bulls, I have a rule that I don't declare anything on teams until they've at least played a few regular season games, so let's wait and see. Tyrus and Rose look pretty good though, and if my eyes didn't deceive me, Nocioni and Gordon shot the ball well this evening. -

I see no way Tampa Bay wins this series now. Last night seemed like one of those irreversible momentum swings. I know Tampa has two at home if needed and momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher, but it would be hard for a veteran team to recover from last night, let alone a young one. All things considered, that is probably the worst in game baseball collapse I've ever seen. I've seen teams blow bigger leads in uglier fashion, but to be up 7-0 with two outs in the bottom of the 7th of a potential pennant winning game and lose is unfathomable. Then again, I have been wrong a lot on Tampa Bay this year, hopefully I am one more time and they pull it out. -
Murcie is dead on. I also think that as much goodwill and cleaning house that has gone on in the last year now, the cleaning house just wasn't complete yet. Once Tallon is gone, and somebody with the last name Bowman takes his place, the "cleaning house" will FINALLY be complete. Well that, and Khabibulin being traded seems like a priority as well, but you know what I mean. I honestly had no problem with the move itself. I was (and still am) baffled by the timing of it, but if they play well in the coming days and weeks nobody will care about that either. Hopefully that indeed is the case, I think Quenneville is a good coach and hopefully he shows it.

Other than the fact that Kane makes me feel old by pointing out he was 13 in the spring of 2002, I love this commercial. -

What a collapse. I think Boston wins the series if they win tonight. -

I spent the last two months of the year hoping Tampa Bay would win the AL East and not Boston so we'd play Tampa Bay in the first round, assuming we made the playoffs. I clearly couldn't have been any more wrong in my line of thinking, a classic case of "be careful what you wish for". -

It's hard to take what these "experts" say seriously because almost all of them have some sort of vendetta. -
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) My jaw dropped when I heard the news. I have to think something is going to come out about Savvy in the next few days, because the timing just doesn't make sense. 4 games into the season? After a win? I will say this. If Rocky and Bowman want to put their stamp on this team fully(which I'm not opposed to), Tallon should have been out yesterday. If he sticks around until the end of the season, I'm going to be very upset. I agree with you on Tallon 100 percent. And really, I agree on Savvy too. My Dad (biggest hockey fan I know) and I were talking about it the other night and we both agreed that Savard would be gone if we got into December and the team wasn't playing well and that Quenneville was the likely replacement, but I am shocked at the timing of this move.
-
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) I don't think Dale Tallon may be around much longer either the way things are going. This move has Scotty Bowman written all over it. I'm not surprised Quenneville ended up with Savard's job, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bowman ends up with Tallon's job.
-
Yeah I'm not surprised by that. I know he has a lot of experience, does he have a good record with fixing a power play? The Hawks power play drove me crazy last year and it has again so far this year. It has the talent to be an elite group IMO.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:18 AM) I just heard this... how wild. Scotty Bowman? What about Joel Quenneville? They hired him a couple months ago I believe, although didn't he have a DUI recently too?
-
One thing I will say is I hope the new coach can help improve the power play strategy. I never liked it under Savard. It's really a shame they had to fire a organizational legend like this, and the timing of it is a bit strange, but it seemed like this was coming.

per WSCR. I figured it deserved it's own thread. If I am wrong, feel free to delete and move everything back into the NHL thread. Whoa.

per WSCR, Denis Savard has been fired. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=68286 -
Well I will agree with the people in here who say women do hit on guys. I have been hit on before, and if women will hit on me, they will hit on ANYBODY. But getting to your point, people make this way too complicated. Just be confident in yourself, perceptive of the girl, and be yourself. If you don't suck, the girl is going to be nice to you, even if she isn't interested. And odds are it won't take you long to find a girl who is interested.

What hell is going on in this picture? Somebody please help me out. Also, Mr. Met was apparently decapitated on live television last night, and that's a damn shame:

The first 45 seconds of this is the funniest thing I've ever seen on ESPN, especially the reaction of Herbstreit and Fowler. This is from last Saturday's College Gameday.
