QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 03:18 PM) And once again, we find Obama voters accusing *some* McCain voters of racism. That's not a problem and understood as "proven" and "fact". It's been happening for a year and continues to happen. What a shame. For the record, I didn't vote for Obama.

NIU blew out Kent State tonight 42-14 in a classic Northeast Ohio snowstorm. We're 6-5 now, and will at least have a realistic shot at a bowl if we can beat Navy at Huskie Stadium next week. -

NIU won 86-79 in our home opener this evening against Indiana State. We're a lot better than last years 6 win outfit, and we appear to have an absolute stud in Jake Anderson and a baby Ben Gordon in Mike DiNunno. Both had 27 points tonight, and Bryan Hall had a nice game running the point, and our bigs like Sean Kowal, Ante Dzepina, and Najul Ervin helped out. I still think next year is our year to be good considering we only have one senior (a reserve forward) and Xavier Silas and Tony Nixon will arrive on the scene, but at least we're going to be decent and fun to watch this year it looks like. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Coming from all the racist people up north that want to build a wall to keep out Mexicans*, I take that as a compliment. Because of course the only reason that some people up north support a fence being build 2,000 miles form them is because of race. That's a much, much more broad brush to paint with than any of us have even come close to using. Especially since we have far more numerical data to back the concept we are bringing up than this silliness does.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:47 PM) And NSS, I offer you another example. Have you really been missing these for the past year? It could not possibly be that Bush was an idiot and even GOP voters bailed on Bush and voted for anyone else but him, then returned to the GOP? Nope, not one person thought to mention that scenario. It couldn't be that that region, faces economic hardships and a loss of low skilled industry unlike any other area, combined with lots of competition from illegals and McCain had a stricter plan than Obama? Could it be that that region has strong ties to the mining and coal industries and Obama was much more critical? Naw, must be race. You really aren't reading these posts, are you? I said it's a very small number of people, but a larger number reside in the south. The numbers do not lie. I would say maybe 2 percent of people who switched from Obama to McCain did it due to race, and about 5 percent in the south. It's a VERY small number, even in the south I would say 95 percent of voters who made the switch did it due to the reasons you said. You can continue to ignore my points though if you'd like, but you are better than this Texsox.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) Huh? He said that the media covering Obama as if he were the incumbent could have been a factor in the south. My response was simply that had the media coverage being prObama ad nauseum been a factor anywhere at all in McCain's favor, he'd be president because the media coverage was ridiculously one sided.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) Again, NSS, these are the posts I'm talking about. And they have been going on for a year. It's undeniable that the racist white voters are the south because they switched for race reasons only. How we somehow know their reasons I do not know. But no one switched in the north and if we did, we know it wasn't because of race. So, you don't think there is a higher number of racist white folks percentagewise in the south than the rest of the country? Becuase if you do, I don't see as how you can deny the point I made there. And if you actually don't think that there is a higher number of racist white folks percentagewise in the south, than we will have to just disagree.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) One of the big themes of this election was people wondering, "what effect will race have", now that it's over we are looking at map of a historically racist area (appalachia's through tenn-ark-okl) and see that formerly democrat voters went for republicans. What are some causes? • name rec for mccain, hard to believe after an election this covered. • media ran Obama as incumbent in press • military experience for McCain • generally lesser educated area, more susceptible to negative campaigning.• race But all in all, I think the last factor is the biggest. The highlighted could be accurate to a degree, and I see what you are saying with the other reasons, but I don't buy any of the first three reasons overall. Especially reason number 2, because if the obscenely biased media coverage had been even a small factor anywhere in this race, McCain would be president.
-
This thread is an example of even very smart people reading too much into things. Look, there are a small number of white people who voted for McCain because he's white, there are also a small number of black people who voted for Obama because he's black. Now, my guess is those numbers percentagewise are quite similar overall, with perhaps a slight advantage going to Obama due to turnout. But overall, these factors both were obvious going into the election and not at all what determined who won. The maps of the south/bible belt/whatever you want to call it are undeinable in showing that the majority of the "racist white" vote who jumped from Kerry to McCain due to race reasons only, reside in the south. That doesn't make Tex or any other person in the south that jumped in such a way racist, but it means that a relatively noticeable (but still small) number of those votes occured due to race. I think the south is continuing to make progress (SEE: Virginia and North Carolina vote this year), and the deep south is improving, but it still has some work to do. The whole country does, but obviously a little moreso the south. Overall, if you went from a no show vote to Obama because he's black, you are a fool. If you went from Kerry to McCain because Obama is black, you are a fool. The numbers overall in those categories are small, none of the people on this board belong to either, and that's the end of the story. It's not really THAT complicated in my opinion.

I'd be all for it they changed it from MVP to MOP. It's hard to argue with Pujols winning though, even with the fact the Cardinals didn't make the playoffs.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) There's no question that we need an NBA Lottery... it's great. I have no problem with the draft lottery, I have a problem with the fact that it's been pretty blatently fixed on more than one occasion. Hell, even the very first one was fixed. -
QUOTE (Shadows @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 01:06 PM) What? Its not a no brainer at all If you offered all 3 of them to every team in the league and said pick one of these guys, not ONE team would pick Danks over Zambrano or Coles. No chance. I agree on Hamels, but at least half of baseball's GM's would take Danks over Z.

Tony Nixon officially signed with NIU. We're going to be sick nasty at the 2/3 with Nixon, Xavier Silas, and Jake Anderson. Still need a point guard and some depth up front though, but we're starting to get some good talent at least. -

I root for all the programs at NIU and Illinois, but I definitely pay closer attention to the non major (sports other than basketball and football basically) programs here at NIU. I think that's natural though since it's my actual school and I know more athletes here, whereas I just have rooted for Illinois since I was a little kid. -
So you are saying my nickname for him, "the out machine", was not inaccurate?

Swish in New York and with the Yankees is such a bad fit though. His act seems like a bad fit for New York AND the Yankees clubhouse, plus his best quality is his ability to walk and pitchers are going to try to avoid walking him at all costs considering the talent around him in that lineup and where he will hit in it. Maybe he will find Giambi's HGH stache.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) Whats semi ironic about all this is Williams is usually on the other end of these trades, buying low on a player that has fallen out of favor..... It seems like there is more to this perhaps. As good as it looked like Swish was for the clubhouse on the surface, maybe the people in there grew tired of his act? Certainly possible.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) I'm going to look at it from the other side of the coin. While I'm not thrilled with the value we just got for Swisher, if Williams hung onto Nick, and he had a 2009 similar to 2008, the posts of "Williams had too much pride to show that he made a mistake" would be out in full force. Williams missed on Swisher. It was a fantastic idea on paper, but Swisher didn't come close to his Oakland numbers. Williams decided to cut his losses, and move on. I completely agree with you actually, as I said I don't have a problem with trading him and cutting the losses. I even think that although we probably could have got a little more in return for this, that isn't a big deal. But all I'm saying is that although Swish was a fantastic idea on paper that didn't work, even had that idea worked out as we expected it to, we would have overpaid in the Oakland trade. However, since it didn't work out, that trade becomes all time bad now, and that's unfortunate because Kenny doesn't make too many deals like that. Although I guess considering he rarely makes a trade where he gives up a lot OR gets back a bust (let alone both such as in the Swish deal last winter), he deserves a pass.
-
My problem isn't even this trade. Although we did sell low, getting rid of Swish in general is something I have no problem with. The problem is the fact we traded what was left of the farm to get him last winter. Even had we got the Swish we expected to get in that trade, we overpaid. But considering what we got out of Swish and got for him today, that trade is perhaps the worst one in KW's tenure considering what we gave up (nothing) in other bad KW trades in the past.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 10, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) Well I'm officially a Rutgers Scarlett Knights fan now. Went on Saturday, and had a great tine, the atmosphere at the college games was just incredible. Can't beat the atmosphere of college football. Need to make sure you get to a game at one of the grand stadiums of the land someday (Penn State, Florida, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, LSU, etc). If you were blown away at Rutgers, you'll be, well more than blown away at those places. I don't know how much longer you are in the northeast, but you should try and check out a UConn home basketball game too or something. -

By the way, I don't think it's any coincidence that they are playing so well in front of what has been a packed building every night. It'll never be the old place, but the energy in the UC is obviously beneficial for this young team. -
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) And just like that dissent is no longer the highest form of partiotism, but rather a jailable offense. A guy is arrested for wearing a McCain/palin tshirt at an Obama rally. Gotta love the crown reactions as well. And in the City of brotherly Love. yeah. Everyone there cheering this should be ashamed of themselves. Reverse the situations and the cries of fascism would be running from the front pages of the NY Times and every liberal blog in the country. but I guess it is ok, since it was a Republican who was the victim here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94N1TkuLWss The video didn't make it to youtube until after the election, and nobody really cares about a story like this once the election is over. It's a story if that video is posted November 1st, but not November 7th.

Damn the Hawks looked good tonight. I know they were rested and it was a back to back for Calgary, but still, they won 6-1 and it probably would have been worse if not for some great saves by Kiprusoff. Even Toews finally got a goal. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) Will we really see lower scores because of the deeper 3 point line? I don't think so. Earlier in the season I think you will just because people are so used to the old line and won't think to be the extra 9 inches or so back. I was at the NIU exhibition game yesterday and I can think of 3 or 4 two pointers that were three's last year. As the season goes on though, and once you get into league play, I doubt it makes a big difference. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 01:36 PM) He's getting back to recruiting quality football players. They aren't getting top 20 recruiting classes but they are getting good football players and athletes and Ferenz is now getting back to doing what he does best which is coaching them. There oline is looking very good and should be set for a few years and at QB they have a good number of options going forward and the WR's are developing nicely. They'll put up 7 and 8 win seasons like this year is going to be at current pace, but they'll never get back to where they were earlier in the decade without having uninhibited trips to the Illinois talent bank like they did in those days.
