  1. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 08:30 AM) Sometimes...addition by subtraction is a good thing. Konerko in August: .333/.483/.591/1.074 Konerko in September: .357/.419/.714/1.134 With the exception of Quentin (maybe), he was our best player in August and he's been our best player in September. Please think before you speak.
  2. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) The Sox and Hawks have done joint marketing too. As far as I'm concerned its great marketing. They are playing a game in Wrigley and are marketing a Wrigley field custom towards hockey. Amonte being recognized isn't necessarily a bad idea too, considering he's the face any younger fan of the franchise would recognize (over Hull/Mikita/Espo/etc). Agreed. And hey, I was at the playoff game against Toronto at the old stadium where Amonte scored 4 goals. I was just a very little kid then, but I remember it even now. I would probably agree that Tony Amonte night is a bit ridiculous, but that memory alone makes me think he deserves it.
  3. As obvious as it was how pathetic the NL is when the Cubs were winning, it's even more obvious when they are losing. They've lost almost everyday for a week and a half now, and pretty much nothing has happened to their division/playoff leads.
  4. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 10:07 PM) Since I was nowhere near baseball at that point in time, someone has to explain this to me. I was at the game, saw the whole thing happen, and still to this day don't understand why people think it cost us the division that year. It's a great myth among our fanbase that it did, though. He came into a blowout, had a horrible 9th inning, creating a huge mess that Flash Gordon had to clean up (which he did). He had a big tirade coming off the field, flipped off the umpire and went off on Jerry Manuel. Despite the fact we still won that game, people think that caused us to lose the next 2 nights and then get swept a short time later at Minnesota. I have never understood it.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:57 PM) As someone pointed out in the game thread, it's 5 years to the day of The Paniagua Ahh yes, the most overrated "disaster" in Sox history. Hawk started it with his mass paranoia, and people bought in. We did WIN that game, and lost the next two because typical Sox killers Brad Radke and Johan Santana pitched. Hate that people still think that is why we lost the division. We lost it because we were swept at Minnesota (the Loaiza flu game was not good) and then lost 2 of 3 at home to the Royals.
  6. QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:53 PM) Start? LOL. There have been people on here panicking for months. Every game we lose there are people bungee-jumping off of ledges. I'm sure the usual suspects will be lining up. I have been skeptical of this team all season. However I never even considered "paicking" until the Quentin injury. To be honest, the Quentin injury made me panic. The events of today make me think the Twins are now the clear favorite. This will be a day looked back upon in infamy for a while if we can't win the division, as will be the day Quentin injured himself. One thing I will say is that with as many dumb things as this team does, it is fitting our best player KNOCKED HIMSELF out for the season.
  7. The debates don't mean a whole lot unless somebody f***s up really badly, IMO. Outside of something earth shattering happening, I don't see the debates having a big affect on who wins. Everybody already knows where the candidates stand on the issues and so on. The only debate that could matter is the vice presidential debate. Between Palin's inexperience and Biden's combustability, you perhaps could get the "earth shattering" event there.
  8. They must have a new wonder drug that doesn't show up in testing for this news to be real.
  9. Count me in on the "yes" bandwagon here.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) OK, with those definitions I will agree with you, but I would take Adam Dunn over Juan Pierre everyday of the week and twice on Sunday So would I. My point is that Dunn and Swisher aren't good hitters at all, but they hit for power and draw walks. That is far more important than hitting for average, but I am responding to the orginal idea that Swisher has a "proven track record as a godd hitter". He doesn't at all.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) Isnt have a .800+ OPS over your career clasify you as being a good hitter. Walking is just as much of a skill as flaring a broken bat single. An .814 career OPS makes you a productive offensive player. But there is a big difference between a good hitter and a productive offensive player. Adam Dunn is a very productive offensive player, but he's a mediocre hitter, and on the other side, Juan Pierre is a very good hitter, but not a productive offense player between the lack of power and all the caught stealings.
  12. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) And Swisher has a track record of being a good MLB hitter over the last 2 years which Fukudome does not He's a career .246 hitter. He has a track record of drawing walks and hitting for power, but he has no such record of being a good "hitter".
  13. We could really use Carlos Quentin today. It's really fitting that our best player was knocked out for the year on something dumb and self-induced. If we miss the playoffs, things that are dumb and self-induced will be why.
  14. I absolutely cannot stand this team sometimes. They have to be the dumbest team I've ever seen in any sport.
  15. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) We have to be the only team that cannot execute a simple sacrifice bunt. Pitchers in the NL can do it. And what's worse, we keep trying. Asking the Sox to bunt is like asking Shaq to shoot 3 pointers. It can't be done, so stop trying.
  16. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:36 PM) 1 hit, you have to be f***ing kidding me. And although the hit was legitimate, it was on a play I've seen Scott Rolen make dozens of times in his sleep. Good start, let's do something please.
  17. To me, Boston is easily the best team in the AL now that they are healthy. I don't even think it's all that close. They'll dominate the Angels in the playoffs like they always do.
  18. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) Well, Burnett has been incredibly nasty, so I wouldn't quite use all those adjectives, but our offense is really struggling right now. Burnett has been nasty today, but we've given away a lot of at bats. The only reason his pitch count is about 110 right now instead of 80 is self-induced failures by Toronto.
  19. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) Just checked over at WhiteSox.com and they have like the worst poll ever.. "Who would make the best president?" Thome AJ Dye Paulie BA ridic I'd vote for Swish. He had the whole fanbase fooled into thinking he was something he's not (a good hitter) coming into this season. Sounds like a perfect president to me.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) And the usual Vazquez 6th inning tank job. Yeah, but this game is on the offense. They have been absolutely embarassing, pathetic, useless, whatever you want to call it. If not for the Blue Jays doing us several favors, we'd have come nowhere near a run today and might even be in the process of being no hit.
  21. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) yea and trying to piece it together from the game thread is even tougher It's really hard to describe this game. Errors, people stepping on people, poor umpiring, men left on bse, etc.
  22. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) McD that bastard purposely knelt on Alexei's legs after seeing the ball go into center. Smart play, he had nothing to lose and got away with it. Alexei picked up the ball very late in CF anyways, if he realize it right away there is nothing McD could have done. Swish takes a floating curveball for strike 3. Pathetic.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) Did Griffey swing at a ball? No, but with the way Burnett has thrown, he'd have been better off looking for a walk than looking for a 3-1 cookie.
