QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 04:17 PM) People get paid to write articles that sell. No one wants to read about how the United States flat out choked away its chance and regardless of the age or any of the other bulls*** could have still won. People want to read conspiracy theories, they want to read sensationalism. At the end of the day if the US was the best, they win that meet. Couldn't have said it better myself. The sad part of this statement is it's true, people don't want the truth, they just wan't some BS to make them feel better about themself (or in this case, somebody representing their country). -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) If the Sox tie with the Twins at the end of the year, or lose by 1 game, am I going to be the only one who thinks about Opening Day and the awful job by the umpires? I'll think about it a bit, but at the same time, we've had so many games this season that we should have won but didn't, that I'll be thinking moreso about those.

Broadway has some of the tell tale signs of a guy who was "bored"/working on stuff in the minor leagues. The problem is, his stuff isn't good enough for me to trust that was the case and thus he'll be solid in the majors. I hope I'm wrong though.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 04:18 PM) Depends if you want to give Furcal $15M a season though I guess. And this francise won't do that with Ramirez, Beckham, and Getz in the system. Not saying that's right, but this signing kills the Furcal pipedream some people have. -
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) No, like his career when in the postseason he is a .260 hitter with a .330 OBP. The last three games weren't the postseason, and the Yankees won't play in the postseason. He came through last night, he didn't today, it happens. It's our job to keep first place now, the Yankees at least gave it back to us last night.

A friend of mine who now lives in Los Angeles is always making fun of me about the fact they have so many more fast food type places than we do, so I think Kanye is doing us all a service by bringing one to the Chicago area.

I may be wrong, but to me this move signals that we want to keep Carrasco in the 'pen (not a bad idea), and so we'll start Broadway until we can make a waiver deal. I have no idea what is available on waivers, to be honest, but that is what this move looks like IMO. Broadway could probably get Royals hitters out, but long term we know he's not the guy to be the 5th starter I would think.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 03:49 PM) I believe it was a Spanish crowd who a few years ago mocked a visiting black soccer player by scratching themselves and making monkey sounds. Yeah, people who think racism is bad in America (and obviously, there is still improvement needed) should take a trip over to Europe. -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 01:54 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/b...?urn=oly,100152 This may be more important than people realize. The U.S.A. team is BELOVED by the Chinese fans (and a lot of American fans have traveled over as well), whereas the Chinese fans booed the Spanish all game the other day. The Spanish are one of the bigger threats to the United States, and the U.S. will have a huge home crowd advantage against the Spainish squad, both in the prelim match and the medal rounds if they play again, and that never hurts. -
Maybe I'm just too negative, but this doesn't surprise me at all. It seems like most politicians, regardless of party, are lying scumbags fully capable of doing something like this. I understand that cheating isn't considered a big deal in this country anymore, but also that this happened while his wife did not have cancer, but still, not good. The most bizarre part is Edwards took this risk knowing he would run for president again not long afterwards.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) About 6 months back, Rice had a public Facebook page. Needless to say, there were some very interesting and very nice photos on there. Unfortunately the Aussie Swim Team Management made her shut it down. Blah that's kind of stupid. The vast majority of attractive females with a facebook page are going to have "very interesting and very nice" photos on them, that's just part of the deal. Unfortunate news in the olympics as the United States team lost 8-7 in their baseball opener against Korea. The U.S. erased a 6-4 deficit entering the 9th by scoring 3 runs, but Korea scored 2 of their own in the bottom half to win it 8-7. The United States soccer team was also eliminated, losing 2-1 to Nigeria. The American team gave up a last second goal to the Netherlands in their previous game, turning a win into a tie, and that cost them a spot in the next round. -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:55 AM) I tend to disagree. http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=622/bio/ http://teenvogue.typepad.com/photos/uncate...olympics3_2.jpg The one on the first page of Google images could just be a bad pic. Whoa she looks a lot like somebody I know in those pictures with the hair down. I'm with you though, she looks good with the hair down too. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 13, 2008 -> 12:33 AM) Just another note on the hot athlete topic, Alicia Sacramone does not look nearly as good with her hair down. Google confirms. Looks like through google that she might be italian and a natural brunette too, which is a shame. She is still hot, but come on, italian brunettes should not be dying their hair blonde. As an italian male, I object to such shenanigans. /ethnic public service announcement -

QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 11:44 PM) Stephanie Rice=hot Oh absolutely, I mentioned earlier in this thread that she is just amazing. They said tonight that she and her boyfriend (who I guess is a swimmer too) broke up, what is wrong with that guy? Between Miss Rice and Alicia Sacramone (although she had a bad night), that is just some outstanding hotness. As for Phelps, I really like him. I am usually one who hates athletes who get media hype, but in the case of Tiger Woods and Michael Phelps, it's not media hype. Woods is the best golfer of all time, Phelps is the best swimmer of all time (if not olympic athlete period), and by the time they retire they'll be the best by a wide margin. -
He's been on fire lately, but he looked lost against Beckett, plus a couple days off for the superstar isn't a bad thing right now in mid August. Good timing in that regard, hopefully he'll be even more refreshed and ready to roll the rest of the way when he comes back.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 03:53 PM) I was worried about Danks' ability to compete after his struggles to end last season. He's shocked the hell out of me this season, and there's not many other pitchers younger than 25 out there that I'd trade him for. His first 6 innings last night were Johan-esque. When Danks keeps his changeup down, he's as good as any left handed starter in baseball. The scary thing about him is I think he could still get hitters out without it, because of his heater, cutter, and curve.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) I noticed some of our best posters, those with the most extrensive baseball knowledge have been slightly wrong on a number of things, others seem to be too worried about their reputations to admit it. Anyone else care to be big men and fess up? I'm thinking of some people who will say they will be the first to admit their mistakes. Floyd in particular has proven some well known, intelligent posters wrong. So please feel free to add your name to the I was wrong about Floyd list . . . (NSS ) I'm sure I had plenty of other things I was wrong about, but since I couldn't possibly have been more wrong on Quentin if I tried, I feel better having got that one off my chest. People who can't admit when they are wrong are annoying, we all f*** up sometimes.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 12, 2008 -> 09:10 AM) Upstate New York this weekend. I am planning on going to Las Vegas in November. I have 1 month from Apr. 16 to May 16 where I can travel all around America before I have to return home. That sounds good. You in America for school or how does that work? Hope you have fun over here.

I absolutely RIPPED Kenny Williams for saying that one of his three (I believe it was three) main objectives this offseason was acquiring Carlos Quentin. He quote was "and not a guy like Carlos Quentin, the Carlos Quentin". I figured he was nuts and basically said any team following a 72-90 season that has a main offseason goal of acquiring an injury prone player who hadn't hit in limited big league time was screwed. That was perhaps the dumbest thought I've ever had in my life on any subject, sports or otherwise.

Man the Chinese basketball team had their chance to advance out of the prelims and into the round of 8, and blew it. Obviously they aren't done yet, but they had a 14 point lead heading to the 4th against Spain, only to see it evaporate. Spain eventually won it in overtime. If anything though, that performance makes the U.S.A. domination of China look a little more impressive. Speaking of the U.S.A., they pretty much sleepwalked to a 30 point lead early in the 4th against Angola, and ended up winning by a little over 20 I believe it was. Not much can be read into that, the U.S.A. probably didn't take the game seriously and understandably so, Angola is not really a challenge. Aregentina bounced back from their opening game loss to Lithuania by beating Australia handily. The Aussies aren't a great team, but Patrick Mills looks exactly like he did last season helping St. Mary's to a great season. He's going to have a good NBA career eventually. -

I had never watched swimming in my life until these olympics started, and I went nuts at the end of that race too. It was just one of those things that is captivating, like when a team comes back from a huge deficit in one of the major sports when it seems impossible. And the fact it was an athlete doing it for his country, and our country, made it even better. -
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:26 PM) Swish with the 98 Ks though Yeah we don't have an ideal leadoff or two hitter. I guess you could try Swish with all the walks he draws, but so many strikeouts. Alexei can run and hits for great average, but can't walk. Even OC isn't a very good leadoff hitter right now.

QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:16 PM) Before the season, if you would have told me the following would happen: Crede gets hurt and Fields loses out on the starting 3B job to Juan Uribe Brian Anderson splits backup CF duties w/ someone named Dewayne Wise DJ Carrassco becomes the team's 5th starter when Count goes down ...I would have thought you were completely insane. I'm also disappointed that the '03,'04, and '05 1st round picks couldn't grab the aforementioned spots. Anderson and Broadway are up now, so they can still contribute. How about: Gavin Floyd would be 12-6 with an ERA under 4 in mid August John Danks would be 9-4 with an ERA in the low 3's in mid August Carlos Quentin would be the leading MVP Candidate in the AL in mid August Alexei Ramirez would be perhaps 2nd in AL rookie of the year in mid August, playing everyday at 2B and hitting over .300 Ken Griffey Jr. would be on the team, and struggling to find playing time in mid August Paul Konerko would have missed time and have a .690 OPS in mid August Javy Vazquez, after least season, would have an ERA of 4 and 3/4 in mid August The White Sox would be in first place in mid August

RBI is such an overrated stat, it's like wins for starting pitchers. You can't control what the people in front of you do. I keep hearing "omg Hamilton has 50 trillion RBI's", but if Quentin had the same guys hitting in front of him, he'd be in the same boat, if not have a few more runs batted in.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 10:59 PM) Man, you just can't give your BDS a rest for one f***ing post, can you? Look at the light hearted way the picture is posted and maybe make a funny post, not a partisan post. What the hell are you going to do if Obama loses? You will be un f***ing bearable. I think he didn't mean that as serious as you seem to think he did. However, he's a typical Obama supporter in his endless politicizing of everything, I will say that. Other than the fact I do like McCain, the biggest reason I want to see Obama lose is to see how his supporters would take it. They'd be so depressed, it would be comedic gold.
