The Bears just have a sterling record of 1st round picks the last decade: 2005: Cedric Benson 2003: Michael Haynes, Rex Grossman (who will solidify his bust status this year, his last with the Bears) 2002: Marc Columbo 2001: David Terrell 1999: Cade McNown 1998: Curtis Enis And of course, if you go back into the early to mid 90's, you find studs like John Allred, Rashaan Salaam, Stan Thomas and Alonzo Spellman. Not many teams can match 1st round busts with the Bears in the last 15 years or so.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 4, 2008 -> 09:35 PM) "Little" scare? Taking the team with the best record in the NBA to Game 7 in the 1st round with a losing record is a "little" scare? Correct, that is only a little scare and here is why: Atlanta was blown out in all 4 games in Boston. Every one of those games was over by halftime or earlier, and at no point in any of them did Atlanta have a chance. Boston's lack of composure on the road extended the series, but at no point was Boston threatened because at no point where they threatened at home, a place Atlanta had to win in order to win this series. It's a little scare since today was an elimination game, but it was over by tip off.

Actually, in all seriousness, Getz probably needs to prove that he can hit triple a pitching (he had never played at that high of a level until this year) before you can give him a shot. I expect him to have a good year this year down there and then be given a look for the big league roster at spring training 2009. That doesn't help us now though.
-
Well Benson all but is officially gone now, this brilliant move by Benson insures the RB depth chart: Forte Peterson Wolfe

This shows how desperate we are. I brought up Getz last year, and was laughed at heartily by everybody. He is a pretty talented player though.

Official Recruiting Thread II

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 3, 2008 -> 10:14 AM) http://wildcatsthunder.blogspot.com/ uh oh illanoy!!! None of that is new news. Rumors like that have been going on every week since the day Webster left. However Richmond is a problem child and Webster enjoys catering to recruits like that (as you've seen with some of the generally not good people that have come into the Illinois basketball program in the 2004 to 2007 range), so if he were to switch to UK, it wouldn't surprise me. -
Walks are VERY important because if you draw a lot of them, it usually means you're seeing the ball well and thus will hit pitches that catch too much of the plate. This team, however, defies that logic and is now starting to also struggle drawing walks. This is starting to look like 2007 all over again, and if that turns out to be accurate, Ozzie and ESPECIALLY KW better start feeling the heat.
-
So, the always vastly overrated Tracy McGrady has STILL never even been able to win a first round playoff series, as his team was destroyed tonight in game 6. And Boston is in trouble, even if they win on Sunday. If it took them 7 games to beat a 37 win Hawk team, how will they handle the King? Hopefully ATL pulls it off though, that would make Golden State over Dallas last year look like a very mild upset.
-
Watching our offense makes me mad at our GM again. Didn't take me all that long for this inevitable development, although I can't blame Ozzie for anything right now. His hands are tied with this roster offensively, and the pitching has been fine.
-
What happened to the "CREDE IS GOD, OMG FIELDS SUCKS!" threads?? What a shame we wasted another great pitching performance.
-
Not much Ozzie can do right now. The pitching is fine, and he's stuck as is with our lineup due to the roster KW handed him. You can (and should) bench Uribe and move Quentin up in the order, but i'm not sure what else we can do. There is nowhere for Owens or Fields to play.
-
I can't emphasize how shocked I am to see Lilly and Hill struggling so much. It's not like they both had fluke, career years last year. Just a matter of time before Dempster falls back to earth, washed up Jon Lieber takes Hill's rotation spot, they move Marmol to closer and thus have zero middle relief, and the pitching nightmares really begin. Could be worse for them though: They could have the White Sox offense.

If Floyd, Quentin, and Danks are anywhere near as good as they looked in April, our future isn't as dark as I thought it was coming into this season.

Official: White Sox place Ramirez on Restricted List

QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 2, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) Why not Broadway? He's killing it as a starter right now at triple a, no point calling him up for a few days to pitch in the MLB bullpen. Broadway's day to have a chance is coming soon, just look at the age of 3/5 of our rotation. -
Well if Sheets stays healthy last year, the Brewers win the division by a few games in 2007. The Cubs might all in all be better this year, but they only won last year due to the Sheets injury. As for the NL, it would be a MONUMENTAL upset if anybody but the Diamondbacks win the pennant. They are just so much better than everybody else, they are almost like an AL team talentwise. And we saw how the Cubs did against Arizona last year, before they even had Dan Haren.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 07:32 PM) Or...if they lose...the religious folks can claim that the reason they lost is that they nominated a candidate that wasn't big with their group and that was their biggest mistake. Oh I'm aware that is EXACTLY what is going to happen if McCain loses, which is why this election is so important for the direction of the republican party. If McCain loses, the Republican party will continue to steer further and further right and also continue to lose seats in Congress. I mean, they'll lose seats in congress regardless of what McCain does in November, but the rate of seat loss will only get worse in the next 4 years if McCain loses and the party keeps going to the right.

If they can go around .500 overall next year, Crean should get a statue. -
Is a key injury to a pitcher going to hand the NL Central to the divisions 2nd best team for the 2nd year in a row? I hope not.

Official: White Sox place Ramirez on Restricted List
whitesoxfan101 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Can somebody explain to me how the restricted list works and when Alexei can come back? Outside of I think people who get PED suspensions go on the restricted list, I've never heard of it, let alone know what it means. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 2, 2008 -> 09:46 AM) I guess I'm in the minority, but I actually think that Wood is likely to develop into a good closer. I think he's perfect for it, and have been saying so for a couple years now. He needs time to adjust of course, but by the 2nd half of the year, I'm thinking he'll be pretty decent. Until he gets to that point though, maybe best to flip Marmol and Wood at least some of the time. Pitch Wood in the 8th, Marmol in the 9th - until Wood gets situated. Wood as a reliever is actually a horrible fit stats wise. Throughout his career, the one consistent thing about Wood has been he struggles in the first 25-30 pitches of his outings because it takes him time to find his bearings, and he struggles with control. That's a stat that been true throughout his decade or so in the majors, and when you've been around that long, the stats don't lie.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 05:21 PM) That was amazing. 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA. That kind of production won't last and he'll likely have a rough patch where his numbers regress to the means, but he is proving to be a formidable lefty starter for them again, which is a big deal. Micah Owings #'s are more impressive to me though: 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA .421 average, 1 HR, 4 RBI, over 1.000 OPS.
-
Lou is in a bad spot with that bullpen. Two of his three late game relievers (Wood and Howry) have been very bad this year. Realistically, he is using Marmol properly because Marmol is coming into tough spots (like today, got out of a 1st and 3rd 1 out he inherited) and getting 5 or 6 tough outs instead of the 3 you get from you closer, however losing games in the 9th is just such a ball buster for a team. He could move Marmol to closer, but right now he doesn't really have anyone, let alone 2 or 3 guys, that can build the bridge to Marmol, so the ball would never get to #49. Anyways, the Brewers win 2 of 3 at Wrigley and went 4-2 there in this first month. They only play the Cubs one more time until mid September (a 4 game series at Miller Park the last 4 days of July), and only have one three game series left at Wrigley. With Cameron, Sheets, and Gallardo healthy combined with their experience last year, the Brewers are the better team. The problem is, the odds of those guys staything healthy the rest of the year aren't good.

David Stern, the hypocrite: Last year, he takes a rule literally, suspending Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for "leaving the bench", even though they came nowhere near the fray and went maybe 15 to 20 feet towards a scrum about 50 feet away that didnt even have punches thrown or otherwise. This year, Kevin Garnett shoves a ref, and no suspension. Sure, he might not have known it was referee (I don't buy that), but he still shoved a ref. What happened to "taking a rule literally" and "no wiggle room" David? If David Stern wants people to stop saying his league is fixed, he should stop acting like it is with his rulings. Last year, he wanted the team that is a global bastion for the league with players from all over, and has lots of people who stay out of trouble to continue their dynasty, and this year he wants Lakers/Celtics. AWFUL. (Btw, side note, the no call on Butler's walk this year just evens it up for the walk LeBron got away with last year. Unless David Stern is making the ruling, things tend to even out).

QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 08:54 PM) Pretty much, McCain is a democrat, in my eyes. McCain isn't a democrat, he's what republicans were before the religious nut job idiots took over the party. Maybe him winning in November might steer the party back towards it's roots (aka in the right direction).

I'm always a bit skeptical of Lance Broadway since he can only average 4.5 to 5 K/9 against AAA hitters. However, with a 2.37 GO/AO and only 8 walks in 36 innings, it seems he is keeping the ball down and still in (or near) the strike zone, so I'm starting to feel optimistic.
