  1. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 12:24 AM) Some people may have had a little hope for Honel, but his last couple of outings out of the pen have pretty much comfirmed he's done as a prospect. Just another fantastic selection from Duane Shaffer. Yeah, well he has 52 walks in 61 innings to go along with only 44 strikeouts, and has a 0.80 GO/AO, not good. At least our 2nd round pick in that draft in the lefty Wing seems to be having a nice bounce back year at B-Ham. I'd think if he can stay healthy he'll be in Charlotte next year, I hope he can keep pitching well.
  2. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 12:51 AM) If Poreda eventually made it as a 2006 version of Matt Thorton -- I'm talking dominant lefty setup man -- would people really be that pissed? I mean, I know Porcello was taken immediately afterwords, but I'd have to think that getting a great reliever with the 25th (?) overall pick is better than the 'expected value' of that pick. Poreda's long term future depends on health and the development of his off speed stuff. Really, he was a "safe" pick in the sense that even if his secondary stuff doesn't develop, he's still a 6'6 lefty with a mid 90's fastball and power sinker that gets a ton of grounders. But yeah, if he develops some secondary pitches, he'll be a starter, if not, relief pitcher. And then of course there is the injury factor, but I'm hoping that doesn't come into play too much.
  3. Poreda continues to dominate btw....2 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 k's, 3 groundouts......not sure if they think he's a SP or RP, but he seems ready for Kanny either way.
  4. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 12:11 AM) Anyone who uses the wraparound in 94 is a cheap son of a b****. It's a complete glitch...that game was on NHL 06 (for PS2 at least) and we played it a ton...if you don't allow that cheap bulls*** the games are actually fun and intense instead of a retard-fest. BTW, I'll beat you at that game anywhere, anytime. lol after a while we did ban the wrap around, so I ended up just using angle shots and 1 timers. Every goal on NHL 94 seemed to be a glitch, that was the fun of it. I have NHL 96 on that same Sega I mentioned I have WS Baseball 96, it's a lot of fun.
  5. I've still got World Series Baseball '96 for Sega Genesis at my Dad's house, what a great game. That middle of the order with Thomas, Ventura, Tartabull, and Baines CAN NOT BE STOPPED. And of course, with Officer Karkovice behind the plate, nobody is stealing bases. Also, Manny Ramirez is on the cover of that game. DAMN he's been good for a long time.
  6. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 11:58 PM) Every game ended in something like a 18-15 score, but yeah, that game was awesome. Nothing beat the cheap rap around goals in that game. Belfour was so awesome on that game, he could hold a team to 5 or 6 even if they did wrap arounds all game. I'd usually win about 10-5, just about unbeatable with the Hawks. I loved getting penalties too, Bernie Nicholls and his incredibly slow speed always caught the opponent off guard with the change of pace, it was like the hockey version of pitching Joel Zumaya and Jamie Moyer back to back.
  7. NHL 94 baby. The wrap around move with Jeremy Roenick combined with Eddie the Eagle between the pipes= I was unbeatable. Castlevania was also money (especially 1 and 3 for NES), Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 for SNES (3 SUCKED though), and in terms of at the arcade, I was unstoppable on any form of Tekken (King FTW!!), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, NBA Jam, and The Simpsons. And amen on hockey and soccer video games Rowand, as well as Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball for Super NES. And of course, any Super Mario Bros. for NES and/or SNES.
  8. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 11:25 PM) thank you for the info my good man. IIRC, in the offseason KW said that Broadway was throwing a 2-seamer similar to Garland's. Perhaps now he feels more comfortable to throw it in game situations. Yep, the splits and what I've seen suggest the last 10 starts has been when he's started to throw it more. And it makes sense with the walks, K's, and ERA going up too, Garland in 2002-2004 had walk totals in the 80's and struggled, whereas in 2005-2007 he's about cut them in half and has been a much better pitcher as a result. The good news is all that suggests that Broadway has hope as an MLB pitcher if he can continue to improve that 2 seamer. The bad news is look how long it took Garland to control it at the MLB level, and keep in mind how much younger of an age Garland got to the MLB and was throwing a 2 seamer.
  9. The reason Javy has been a better pitcher is he's been going almost exclusively fastball/changeup to do the dirty work, and only goes to the breaking ball as a change of pace to keep hitters off guard. He finally understands that if he just goes fastball and changeup, with just a few breaking balls to keep people honest, he can be a really good pitcher with as dominant as his stuff is along with it's natural movement. It's been fun to watch.
  10. At least JD continued to up his trade value, Bukvich looked good, and Fields continues to impress. But I can't believe how bad this team is, I think we're going to end up in 5th.
  11. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 11:07 PM) Broadway has been striking a lot of batters out lately. I think he is probably averaging at least close to 1 K per inning since about June or so. The problem is, for a control pitcher, he hasn't had much control this season. Perhaps he has really been letting it loose and hence why he is issuing more walks. His walk AND strikeout totals have been way up lately. Based on what I've seen (I've seen 2 of his starts in the last 6 weeks via MILB), it seems like his 2 seamer has had a LOT more life. Not sure if it's the arm angle or release point or what, but his 2 seamer has been a lot better. Thing is, he doesn't seem to know where it's going at all times, but neither does the hitter, which has led to more k's, more walks, and a lot of pitches. Hopefully he can harness the movement on that 2 seamer though, if he can keep up his recent k splits and get the walk totals down to a modest level, then maybe we have something. First 10 starts: 53 innings, 22 BB, 24 K Last 10 starts: 60 innings, 36 BB, 50 K The thing is, he allowed 59 hits in each of those 10 start stretches, so his ERA rise has been due to the walks obviously. Just get that walk total down a bit and try and keep the K rate up, and he's at least modestly better and can project to a guy that can help for the big club IMO.
  12. Bristol lost 4-1. Po Yu-Lin threw in that one, 4 innings pitched with 7 hits, 4 runs earned....but no walks, 8 strikeouts, and 3 of the 4 non k outs were on the ground. He's now 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA at Bristol, with 37 hits, only 8 walks, and 40 k's in 37 innings and a 1.41 GO/AO, .257 average against. Frank Rosario threw 4 strong relief innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 4 k's, no runs, lowering his ERA to 3.86, and has been great his last 5 outings. Birmingham won 13-8. It was actually 13-1 heading to the bottom of the 9th, but a bullpen collapse by Honel (0.1 IP, 5 runs earned) and Bittner (0.1 IP, 2 runs earned) made it look closer before Hernandez got the final out. Ryan Wing improved to 5-4 with a 3.07, going 5 innings and allowing only 2 hits and 1 run (on a solo HR), with 3 walks and 6 k's. In a bizarre feat for the Barons, they exploded on offense, as every starter except Cole Aldridge contributed, and Collaro had *gasp* 2 walks in 1 game!!
  13. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:47 AM) on another note...any reason egbert only went 4? I'd guess it was because he was pitching a lousy game?
  14. There is no such thing as an untouchable, but there is no chance in hell a guy as in love with his young guys as Stoneman would even think of giving us close to what it will take to convince us to trade Konerko. No thanks times infinity.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 12:02 AM) What's the chances they make all base coaches wear helmets now? Joey Cora should have been wearing a helmet last year, but that was for a different reason. Vin Scully has been calling for it ever since I've been watching Dodgers games on DirecTV and MLB.TV, which is several years now. Looks like he was right.
  16. Heath has really been coming on lately after that God awful start. And I'd like to see Jason Bourgeois get a shot at the "Pablo Ozuna role".....he has more potential than Andy Gonzalez by a mile and a half. I also hope we see Oneli Perez in Chicago at some point this year.
  17. If he can shorten up his swing so that he'll catch up to the fastball more consistently, look out. He already knocks the stuffing out of mistake off speed pitches, so he's ahead of the game. If we can get him to shorten the swing and let the bat and his natural power (which is bigger than Crede's) do the work on those good heaters, look out. He'll never be the fielder Joe is, but he seems on the path to adequacy in the field, and although he will K a lot, he oozes potential at the bat.
  18. Games like tonight are why I still watch. Every once in a rare while you get a treat like that where you comeback from 7-1 down against the best team in the game and sweep a doubleheader. I also watch to see Fields keep getting better and see what the young guys can do. There is never really a reason to not watch, no matter how bad they are.
  19. You have to let him start all August and September and see what you have, but I have little faith he'll be anything. He simply leaves way too many pitches up in the zone. Everybody keeps saying he has no balls and gives away what he's throwing, but what I've seen of him, both in the starts I've watched of him at Charlotte and now the 2 here, he leaves a ton of pitches up and gets killed as a result. At age 24, it's getting too late to get rid of that habit.
  20. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) The reason why I watch and why the rest of this board still watches is because we are very sick. ^^^^^ Winner.
  21. I love game show network, btw. Carey will be ok, but nobody can replace Bob Barker.
  22. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) I was discussing this at work today and became curious if any other sports have been fixed on this level. I honestly must have been too naive but I always doubted professional sports were fixed. I had the friends that always said the fix was in or that Vegas calls the shots. My question is, how often do you guys think this happens and in what other sports? Well among the 4 major sports, IMO it is just about impossible to fix hockey and baseball like this. Football is somewhat possible, but that is another sport that would be very hard to fix. The one thing you could say if there is holding on every play, but besides that.....I mean Super Bowl 40 was as bad as it gets for officials, and even Mike Holmgren rightly said "maybe we would have won if not for the guys in the striped shirts", but who knows. The NFL is the most likely sport to be "run by Vegas" since, as much as people hate to admit it, gambling is the ONLY reason the NFL is so popular, but to fix a football game without it being obvious would be very hard to do. Basketball is the one game where the officials directly affect almost every game, and every official calls a game different, and that is why it will always have problems with integrity questions and the refs. I bet this isn't the first time it's happened, but it's so hard to prove. It just so happened this time, Donaghy got into such a deep hole that he ended up making it obvious for the investigators. The NBA is never going to be the same though now that the conspiracy theorists have been proven right, the NCAA has had stuff like with CCNY and Arizona State, but not only is this the first NBA gambling scandal, but it's the first at any level I can remember with the ref as the culprit. Strange stuff.
  23. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 08:44 AM) Donaghy getting threatened Unsurprisingly, Donaghy is getting threats now, but to add to this is this interesting quote: So, now we may have more officials and players involved. This just keeps getting worse. Not surprising though. The odds of this going on, but just one single official being the only party involved are slim to none and slim left town. I have doubts as to if players are involved too, but I'd be surprised if there weren't other refs involved. Just too unlikely it's isolated to this one ref.
  24. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/base...s.ap/index.html Unreal, so horrible. RIP.
