QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 10:50 PM) Yeah, but Wade can hit jumpers well-enough. Michael was never a great 3-point shooter either. But he could hit the jumpshot from 20 feet and inside when we needed it. Wade can do the same thing. Rose will never be able to do that. I wouldn't go that far. Wade wasn't a very good jump shooter when he came into the league, he's really worked at it. I'm not sure Rose will get to where Wade is now (I'd say Rose wasn't as good a jump shooter coming into the league as Wade was), but I think he can get into that neighborhood with a lot of work. It's interesting, Wade and Rose have a lot of similarities as players. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) sometimes I think some of this stuff is just cooked up by Cleveland writers because the lack of a shooter thing isn't that big in my book. It's not like a shooter on a Bulls team with LBJ would have to be a star or a guy that can create his own shot, I imagine the Bulls would be able to find one at an affordable cost, they may even get a good veteran player at a discount who is looking for a ring. LBJ knows what's going on, I don't think a lack of a shooter on the current roster would stop him from coming to the Bulls Yeah, guys that are just out there to hit perimeter shots can be found at a pretty good rate. Especially if you offer them Derrick Rose and LeBron James on their team.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) The interesting thing is that they have studied violent sports that do not use helmets, such as rugby, and this trend does not really exist. The helmet in football is being used as a weapon rather than a safety device. Would you watch NFL football if they did not wear helmets (or at least not helmets like the current equipment)? I'd still watch it, but I think a lot of people wouldn't. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) I remember reading an article that talked about the NFL with no helmets. It basically suggested that the odds of someone dying on the field grow, but that head injuries in general would go down as a result because people would no longer want to use their head as a weapon. I read this article too, I believe it was on yahoo as well actually. I think it makes an interesting, and perhaps valid, point. One thing that I don't think can be argued is that helmets are used as weapons moreso than safety devices. That has perhaps been minmized a bit recently as just about all helmet to helmet contact is now illegal, but it's impossible to outright remove it. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 10:44 PM) The two of them could be our Isiah and Dumars, as far as I can imagine, except with Wade being a bit more aggressive than Dumars in taking it to the rack... Rose is never going to be a great shooter... Well that's the issue. With a Rose/Wade backcourt, you have two guards on the floor basically at all times that are not good at all from 3 point range. They are very dynamic players, but you need to make some 3's in today's NBA. In such a case, you need a 3 man that can shoot from long range, but Luol Deng is not that guy and he has a contract that is hard to move. You'd either have to find a way to move Deng and replace him with a wing that can shoot 3's, or find a Euro style 4 that can play pick and pop.

I don't think Rose for Wade is worth it, personally. Although I can understand the questions that would arise about how they'd play together. Such questions could be asked about LeBron and Rose playing together too though. All three of the aformentioned are big time ball dominant players.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 2, 2010 -> 11:37 AM) Thats a very shallow lineup. If Beach can be a solid player as a rookie, you're good 3 lines deep. But yeah, the 4th line is definitely a question mark, as is defense after the big 4. Going to need some kids to play well and develop, and it'd be particularly ideal if the team can stay as healthy as possible, since it's just more kids having to play (some of whom may not be ready) if anybody gets hurt. We should keep in mind though that the same can be said for almost every other team in the league. There are a few teams in the league (like the Hawks last year in particular) that are just endlessly deep, but I don't think it's realistic to expect a repeat. That is a team that is certainly good enough to be a top 4 or 5 team in the West though IMO, and you could do a lot worse coming off a title, especially considering there seems to be quite a bit of young talent in the organization and the team was obviously in salary cap jail. And who knows, maybe Stan and the crew have a positive surprise or two yet in store before the season starts, although obviously that'd be very tough with the cap.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 09:52 PM) The problem is, personally I think we need another big bat to keep up with the current Twins roster. If they add Cliff Lee, well, I just don't know what to think. I think the Sox can offset the Lee trade if it happens by acquiring reasonable offensive help. The problem is, to your point, I don't think just offsetting such a move would be good enough. And this isn't even taking Detroit into account.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 10:16 PM) Interesting...that's the first thing I've heard about Rose. I heard Sam Smith mention the Rose/Lebron thing as well potentially being an issue on the radio here a day or two ago. As well as one other person, but unfortunately I can't remember who it was. But that is definitely out there.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) I didn't want the Bulls to baby LeBron and treat him with kid gloves the way Cleveland has. Well it depends. If you can get Wade and/or Bosh, I would tend to agree with you. But if LeBron is your only big time option, I think you almost kind of have to sell your soul if that's what it takes. The Bulls simply cannot afford to strike out here for any reason.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 10:33 AM) Yup. I can't wait till Friday. I think we're going to have all of the answers we are particularly interested in by the end of the day Thursday. Oh, and btw, not only did only like 50 people show up at the airport in Miami, they apparently showed up at the wrong terminal. Oops.

Absolutely gigantic homestand heading into the All Star break. Need to win some games, establish home field and the ability to defeat AL teams a little bit, and feel good about ourselves and our position in the standings. Plus, I think every win not only gets us closer to first place, but closer to acquring some offensive help. I just can't believe Kenny isn't going to make a move if we continue to be right there in the standings.

QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) It's so weird...the team is 1 game back, but in no way does it feel like that.... Absolutely could not agree with you 100 percent more. Being right there around the 4th of July/All Star Break usually has a special feeling to it, but I just don't have it right now. I guess a lot of us are still skeptical with our record against the AL (and understandably so), but I will say that between our pitching finding it's stride and this division looking kind of mediocre, we have a great shot to be right within striking distance the rest of the way. Be nice to acquire a bat or two though, I think that'd make many of us feel a lot more excited. One other point I think though is that as late as July 23rd of last year, we were 50-45 and tied for 1st place coming off a perfect game. Of course, the whole thing just completely died on us after that, and I think in a sense this feels eerily similar to that season for a lot of us right now, and it's hard to shake a memory that recent.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 5, 2010 -> 01:24 AM) No it isn't. But he's been great in his role so far this year. I agree. Maybe he's found a niche as a utility player and figured out how to do it well. Let him keep going at it that way until he proves he is a useful guy off the bench, or that he's just in the midst of a streak of good fortune and still sucks at the end of the day. If you want Beckham in the minors, the plan is still Omar at 2B and Viciedo at 3B, then re-evaluate when Teahen comes back. But idea obviously may have taken a hit tonight.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 11:43 PM) ESPN's bottom ticker showing a quote from Wade about how his family is the biggest reason for whatever decision he makes. If I didn't know better, he's going to agree to come to Chicago and that will be the main reason he uses to tell the Heat fans. I hear you. I couldn't possibly be more pessimistic about LeBron right now, but I feel reasonably good about Wade. I just hope we get somebody at this point though.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 08:52 PM) The ones after were even worse (even the Red Sox one). It was just a time where WS ratings were going down like crazy. Yep. I don't know about last year, but I know the 3 World Series after ours were all lower rated than ours. -
There's really no point in even letting him bat if he's not going to be allowed to try and steal upon reaching in spots like that.
-
Good pitching and just enough offense, just as the formula always seems to be when we win. It was nice to see some extra base hits though, to say the least. Only a game out, a beautiful thing.

Yeah, baseball is really the only good sport for advanced metrics because of how individualized it is.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 05:06 PM) Even if they are the Brooklyn Ballers? That would help, but they aren't going to be for a few years. I don't even think moving to Brooklyn could move the Nets past the Knicks though, although I'm sure that's the plan they tried to sell LeBron on, along with endorsements he could make. And yeah, in response to iamshack, I honestly don't know if anybody has a clue what LeBron is thinking. Even with the WWW stuff, you'd THINK that means he's staying in Cleveland, but it's just hard to read into anything LBJ does. Which is precisely why you take Wade and Bosh if you have the chance and don't wait on LeBron, it's just too dangerous to do if there is another viable option.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Wow, just saw this now. Can't believe it's not a bigger story. The NFL is ignoring these stories as much as it can, meanwhile, the evidence just keeps mounting and mounting that the game the way it is currently played must either change, or an equipment change is necessary. This is simply ridiculous. Yeah, the NFL is basically ignoring stories like that one and hoping they go away. They need to understand though that it's becoming quite clear that there is a big link between playing football and having a scrambled brain. The scary part is that I'm not sure how much can be done to fight this trend. Obviously, much more strenuous standards are needed to diagnose and protect players with concussions (and we seem to be slowly headed in that direction), but even beyond concussions, it simply seems like playing football messes with a lot of people's brains. And I'm not sure what can be done to stop it or even slow it down. I know football players go in knowing the health risks, but you'd think there is a way to protect them more adequately. Either way though, I will say that stories like these make me want to be a little more cautious in judging guys who are seeming knuckleheads such as Chris Henry was. As for the reason this isn't a bigger story, I think it's the same reason head injuries in football in general aren't a bigger story right now, and that is people really like football and simply don't want to hear about the fact that it may be very damaging to the participants, even moreso than we already realize. -
Yeah, you have ZERO shot at being the main guy in the New York area on the Nets unless you lead them to a championship victory (or are LeBron James). Even Jason Kidd didn't get a great deal of attention there in leading them to the finals twice in a row, they had playoff games that didn't sell out both of those years.

The Reds scored 9 in the 7th on Friday and 8 today. And they didn't even have Rolen or Votto today. Very good offensive club.

Yeah, somebody throwing darts at a wall is a better source than bleacher report.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) It gets even worse every year... And did I read correctly, Votto didn't make the NL squad? Thats one of the biggest jokes I've ever seen. Yeah I can't think of a worse snub recently than that. -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 4, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) There's a reason why this game really means nothing to a large portion of the fans. It's just real hard to care about something as poorly conceived as the f***ing All-Star game. It's really a game that in most ways is targeting the less intelligent fans when you look at how it's selected and who generally makes it. I'd have no problem with that and would simply ignore the entire thing but for the fact that it somehow decides who has home field in the f***ing World Series. Ridiculous. -

The home field advantage and every team gets a player rules are just mind numbingly stupid. But MLB seems to think they both lead to more people watching on tv, which is why they probably aren't going anywhere.
