White Sox Interested In Coco Crisp
Also if you want to maximize your production from just the general area of "3rd best outfielder" on a given day...........you can platoon Crisp and Kotsay to an extent....whereas Pods/Kotsay both are lefties.

White Sox Interested In Coco Crisp
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:48 PM) Bounceback to what, though? Another year of a .340 OBP and 25 stolen bases? That's his usual level of production offensively, and certainly nothing to get too excited about. Thats the whole thing. And again I said earlier that neither player is my first choice. But if you're talking about picking up Coco for a low one-year deal..versus caving to Pods high demands (rightly so he has to see this as a last ever chance at multiyear money)............. then I have to compare a guy who has routinely gotten .340 OBP versus a guy who is older and shown a far lower floor in recent years.

White Sox Interested In Coco Crisp
It's funny how some people seem more likely to forgive Pods several years of injury plagued awfulness, but wont apply the same optimism to the career of Coco, who is younger...and has been a lot more consistently decent over the years. Coco fits the profile for a bounceback year. Pods toes the line of falling into a downward spiral due to age.

Pods lacks the arm strength, but problem is he also is atrocious in all the other defensive categories. Maybe they're just putting this rumor out there to get Pods' price down.

White Sox Interested In Coco Crisp
Pods in the field was brutal enough for me. Coco can at least do something out there. At the plate, Pods hit .320/.356 against lefties last year....... I sure hope it can happen again but I think we're going to be hard pressed to get that from him at 34. Above all this...if they dont want to get someone great at leading off, I would heavily consider Gordon there.

- Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
Would be nice if it drew one of the suitors for AG out of the mix.- The bad contract game
QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 06:02 PM) Out of all the bad contracts on this page, I think PK is amongst the best of the bad, and I wouldn't even say his is bad, albeit it is a bit pricey. If we look at all the contracts out there for 1B/DH types, the only thing ok about PK's contract at this point is that it'll end soon. Just in terms of what we could do right now with his salary slot, it does hold us back. Notable because PK's people won those negotiations way back when on an extra year. But the Sox couldnt really afford to part w/ him back then.- The bad contract game
Really trying at this. The thought of one-year hometown discount deals (Pods/Thome) are frighteningly appealing after scanning all this.- Jenks not happy with Guillen commenting about his weight
I'm about to be one of those posters that makes bigs leaps and bounds. But he sounds like a guy who has already heard his days are numbered with the team.- 2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
Mets want Jack Cust? Should be a wild ride in the NL.- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
Beckham was the kind of 3B that you could see being solid for a career but not one that makes outstanding plays. Teahan could be same deal, but all things equal, you want to get Beckham into 2b or ss in order to maximize the value of his bat over the coming years. So if he's better at 2b than ss, the decision is clear.- FA Relievers that interest you the most...
I wonder if they'll even look. If Jenks returns and Hudson joins the pen, we're kind of booked. Maybe a lefty? With the glaring offensive needs they'll probably go internal if they can.- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
He looks like a 43 year old Euro bargoer- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
I'm sure Ozzie will call Omar a 'kid' just like everyone else who is months younger than him but still playing.- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
Alexei might not be as good of a ss as Omar at present... but if he stays at the level he was 2nd half last year.... then he's fine defensively. Meanwhile, your solution proposes that we'd rather have the marginal increase in ss defense over the LH power Teahan brings at 3rd.- Is anyone as nervous as I am?
Point blank is we dont know what the team's going to look like. If your point is as simple as --as we stand right now we're a bad offense-- then yes we'd all agree. But you are saying that we're probably going to make no additional moves. There's just zero evidence to back that up. It is your hunch. We even have KW saying he foresees a move happening later in the offseason for a DH. Thats more than he usually says, even- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
I would think if people were honest with themselves, they're upset about this less b/c it's Vizquel but more because our initial free agent splash isnt a big one. Were this an additional move announced in conjunction with a trade for Adrian Gonzalez for spects, i'm sure everyone would be loving it. Like Orlando Pace being a great signing right after the Cutler trade. Had Pace been the only move of the offseason...i wonder what the response wouldve been.- Is anyone as nervous as I am?
Also I'm not ready to write off Kotsay as being non-starter quality. He might not give us the power, but he has hit righties well (even when he was w/ Boston) and can play the field better than Pods and Dye.- Is anyone as nervous as I am?
As a frame of reference, if Peña can get you Brandon Allen for LF, imagine what Hudson/Flowers could do. Right now may be the last time to move them while there's an element of mystery to each. More in the case of Flowers.- Is anyone as nervous as I am?
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 12:59 PM) "who cares" next to Alex Rios's name isn't lazy? In his defense it was 'who knows' -- and it's about right in that we dont know what we'll get. I would be totally fine with the 2008 numbers....Gladly will take those doubles.- Is anyone as nervous as I am?
If we need a source of optimism... consider that the DH/corner OF positions are easiest to fill with what we need. Power. Have two prospects that we can use in a deal to fill that. We can likely do something with Jenks if more $ is needed. If you can replace Dye and Thome's power somehow (can probably bring back Thome super cheap), then look at all the additional HRs we've added.... Teahan over Getz, Rios over BA/Wise Defense is improved over last opening day. The staff is great, and the pen (as most pens) will depend on someone having a bounceback year, etc.- Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
I like the thought of bringing in OV for late game defense...but who does he go in for? OV to 2b and Becks to 3b?- AGon discussion, et. al.
QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) a poster on southsidesox.com met Jake peavy over the weekend and was told from peavy that the w sox are trying to get A. gonzo. The article is up there with pictures of him and jake peavy over the weekend. I wonder if what he saw at the bar was a beer-fueled apparition. kind of like beer goggles but they make you see staff aces instead of more attractive women- AGon discussion, et. al.
Some people believe the postgame should be purely therapeutic during a loss. I for one prefer when the callers' feet are still held to the fire. At least have a reasoned thought. Problem is people imbibe during the game and then get worked up enough to call in and talk loudly about what players had a particularly bad game. As if the world needed that contribution. Not that I want to bring back Prohibition or anything - Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
