QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 21, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) Jason Marquis got $15 million in 2 years from the Nationals. Totally not necessary.gross

Sirotka was my favorite all-time Sox pitcher (granted i only go back til the late 80s). Not sure why, other than the fact that he was pretty much the ace for awhile.
-
Will be interesting to see what he gets vs. Pierre costs here. ESPN sources say it will be a one year, 4.5 to 5M. Hmm... Basically it was worth two prospects to the Sox to save a couple mil in 2010 at the leadoff spot. Well, that plus the fact that they're getting a healthier player who is coming off better recent production.

The Rios thing screws up things for this year's free agency...but the guys we're missing out on are either old or injury plagued (Matsui/NJohnson). The Sox are still going to have money freeing up next year with which they can go in several directions. Plus of the things we're missing out on, I dont know that outfield defense was going to be helped in a different way this offseason with what was available. We needed it at two OF positions, not just one.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) But that doesn't mean that non-compliance with workplace rules should be excused because the former transgressions are more ethically dubious. Wrong is wrong, no matter where it falls on the scale of ethics. Do we know for sure that the employees there are required to stand during God Bless America? It's not a national anthem...

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:16 PM) No chance. Happened with Buehrle in '05...albeit in odd circumstances I'll admit. Maybe an end of World Series situation. Here's hopin'.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) I completely disagree with this. Players can be activists in their free time, but they need to knock it off and act like professionals while they're at work. Baseball is a business that caters to a very socially and politically diverse clientele. Players who alienate large portions of their fan base will cost their employers money. And that's unacceptable. Kids are going to copy athletes. If they have to copy the PED use, party lifestyle and onfield beanball-response scuffling.....then lets have them copy some of the more intellectual parts of life as well. Unfortunately for each athlete with half a thought in his head, there are maybe 8 Kyle Farnsworths. Michael Jordan couldve used his leverage to sway Nike away from their practices in overseas manufacturing of the shoes (and probably couldve created some jobs here too in so doing).........instead his response was "Republicans buy Nikes too." His line of thinking is I suppose what you're espousing, that the athlete should pretend to be completely oblivious to the political agendas going on around him. EDIT: actually i'm confusing that quote with the Jesse Helms campaign question, but it's pretty much MJ's standard line of thinking for anything political - he remains vanilla.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:09 PM) Again, you're at work to work, not to draw attention to yourself and to anger your employer's clientele. My employer supports affirmative action, which I consider to be institutionalized discrimination. Yet, I check those beliefs at the door every morning. Most athletes would rather not be role models, but basically what society has told them is..the way you carry yourself does influence popular thought and the way kids view the world. So if we're saddling them with this, we have to be OK with them making a visible point about the things they believe in. Whereas what you and I do at work, making a spectacle, isnt having too large an impact. Most of us would be in agreement that they shouldnt be role models. But since they unfortunately have to be, I'd rather they say something they believe in and show they have a thought in their head besides party all night/hit ball during the day. I feel the same way about Jared Allen and political comments he makes in the media, even though I'm on a different side than what his views are.

In a playoff series we actually could see Danks used as a reliever some. Getting ahead of myself, I know..

QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) Delgado pissed off a lot of people in New York when he refused to stand for the playing of "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch. I'm not sure that I'd want somebody like that on my team. I respect his personal beliefs and all, but he needs to act like a professional and check those beliefs at the door when he shows up to work. The fact that he'll be 38 next year and is coming off of a season-ending injury makes me want him even less. I believe that act was more to point at the unjustness of the U.S. involvement in the Iraq war, as opposed to just general anti-Americanism. Most would rather he do this in some other way I suppose. The song itself is a little silly. God bless this country, make sure it's just this one country..ok now..bless it!

If Putz comes out electric, and Jenks continues his '09 performance...it will be frustrating to see how the business side will get in the way of them putting Putz in the right role. At least that will be the accusation if the trigger isnt pulled fast enough. I like getting Dolsi if for no other fact that it seems like it's been a few years now where we dont have a stable of possible, ready bullpen arms to go to. As long as Ehren Wasserman was a real possibility for our pen, I knew we didnt have viable relief help on the farm. Last year it seemed like everything viable was on the major league roster, as evidenced by Poreda being up out of necessity. Do you guys think the Sox......for trade value concerns... kind of 'managed' Poreda's ERA last year with the infrequent situations he was put in? If so, another reliever should have been up instead of him (if one was around). And also, will it happen again this year in a sense with Tyler Flowers or Hudson...?

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 12:21 PM) I agree with this, and hopefully he can return to that too I will take those 47 doubles any year gladly. Hell, his 31 total for 2009 sadly wouldve let us for a whole year. Not that this says a ton about anything other than how bad we were.
-
We offer him more money than anyone else and he'll come here. 95% of these deals come down to most $ offered.
-
For Rios' 08 production (which is not even his best) plus his glove...it's a market value contract.
-
For some reason I never realized that Delgado actually has never become horrible, or close to it.
-
Well Quentin's not really a part of this thing in that he doesnt provide a team like SD with longterm savings
-
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/basebal...ticleid=1219502 Not likely to happen between Bos and SD right now. Apparently.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 09:12 PM) I was thinking about this yesterday, and I realized one thing. No way Matsui signs here for $6.5 million when the Angels are making the same offer. My guess is he would have required something closer to $8 million in order to pass the Angels and sign with us. So it's not really $6.5 million we're talking here. It's more. Probably right. But I think it still stands since we've committed potentially more to Putz with incentives anyway. Kenny is given a worst case scenario dollar figure I guess, and thus far 3M (Pierre) plus whatever Putz can potentially make....is what kw was given.
-
It's not like Ozzie wants fewer good players. But it was probably put to him that he can either have DH by committee.....or the same bullpen. Something along those lines. I mean, who in their right mind wants fewer talented players?
-
Since we're looking at roughly 6M for either side of that..... would you have preferred going a route with Matsui (and I guess Beckham leading off....DJ staying...?)
-
A few times now we've lost out on a player to LAA. You can kind of see how this thing boiled down to the Sox probably offering Matsui 1 year 5M and probably just set the market for one of his two preferred teams to go higher. And then after that we just went and got Putz/Pierre. We have so many scrap heap guys and guys we traded for......it just makes me doubt that we can bring cream of the crop guys here ever via FA.
-
Tyler will get time in the minors, but if all goes well I could see him being up midyear. After all, if they bring back Thome we'll be pretty low on right-handed DH options. And TF's already 24. If AJP leaves next year then you're throwing this kid in cold next year with an experienced staff. While you want a young guy to play everyday in the minors... there's also some benefit with letting him sit behind AJP, get the occasional turn at DH. You get to build up the mystery some more with his minor league eye popping numbers. The worst thing that could happen to his trade value is you start him at AAA and he has a slump to start the year. If that happens, forget deadline deals for anything major.

Hello, it's nice to meet you. My name is Devil's Advocate.

One thing I disagree with seemingly most the board... I for one believe Andruw was signed to have a serious role here. -
QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) Would you guys trade for AGonzo with a package centered around Alexei Ramirez? Something like Ramirez, Flowers, Morel, Retherford, & Nix If yes, what options are out there for a replacement SS? Gonzalez is underpriced for two years. It would take a ton more than that package to nab him. It would have to include Hudson & Flowers..and to be honest some third thing that's real nice.

Yep.
