The problem is Hawk probably spent the whole day talking about how much more he'd prefer Carlos Gomez or Russell Branyan

It could also be they're giving CWS every last opportunity to up their offer since they're his #1 choice

I think if JR gets involved, we may see a raise in price. It has been said that JR recently screwed things up with Doug Collins and Mike D'Antoni... but from what I understand those were situations with their own specific nuances. He obviously got it done getting personally involved in the Ben Wallace thing.

If you could have 1 player back
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Feb 16, 2010 -> 11:15 PM) I'm going to be eaten alive for this: Swish. He's one of my favorite ball players, i love his personality, i love his approach to the game, i thought he was railroaded out of town by Ozzie, we got nothing back for him. and one year does not a bad player make. The thought crossed my mind. If we really arent concerned with contracts..then he's up there. Has to be, even just in the sense that he could be moved for something better later on once back to career levels

Ah ok. Scary to think about but I hope I dont have to say Carlos Lee.

It doesnt sound like you're talking about reversing-trades, but just taking back one guy. So if that's the case, Chris Carter

What are our realistic chances to land Damon?
If the goal for Damon is next year's FA market, Detroit is not the place to be for one year. We have that and the personal connections going for us.

Damen I think you mean. There's a Thome street, though I think it's tiny. At least I can only remember seeing it one place, around 5800 N Ridge or so.

Boras plays hardball with his prime guys, but isnt there some precedent for him taking his lowered-value guys and having em sign one-year just-OK deals? Hope we dont get sunk by not having an OF spot for him...

Well he said something he shouldntve blurted out apparently... ...i mean, how do you just erroneously report something that huge? Heh, for me it was but one minute of excitement. Thanks to Bulls rumors etc.

Location almost always ends up being an afterthought in these things.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 09:59 PM) If Kenny wasn't interested he'd waste zero time making that public so as to undermine Boras' leverage. Isnt it good for us to make Detroit pay more though? Puts pressure on them to not be able to do something else farther down the line.

I'm hoping this was the last shot in the dark before we get Branyan. Then plop him in a DH platoon and use Kotsay where he's best..as your best bat off the bench.

I'm sure it's been said, but I bet there's a hilarious situation going on here... where Boras is telling Detroit they have to up their offer b/c the Sox are offering $5M Meanwhile the Sox arent really offering it at all (but staying mum intentionally), and DET is trying to just wait out Boras to finally drop the demands considerably. I suppose a small victory here could be the Sox sort of working with Boras on something positive, albeit a mere extra monetary straining of DET.

Checking the temperature of Soxtalk
The Thome thing took the wind out of people's sails, based on his big name and the place he ended up. That will pass and we have a couple guys who can wipe out thoughts of that with an above-average offensive year.

QUOTE (SI1020 @ Feb 14, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) As for Starlin Castro and the Cubs, they have always overhyped their prospects. I remember a Pat Cline who was supposedly going to be Johnny Bench II

Should a Sox fan WANT Mauer to stay in Minn?
I guess another thing to consider is he could stay in Minn and later on have to be taken out of the catcher position. But still paid at a premium as if he was C. So while he'll still be a great hitter, he'll be paid a (Minnesota-adjusted) large portion of his team's payroll. Perhaps overly so. It would rob the Twins of their current mindset of covering 1B with one of the many capable cheap players out there. And we have no idea if his power spurt of 09 will hold. He could be a Grace-like 1b for them, who for years is a great hitter but robbing his team of a power hitter at a power position. Or I'm wrong and he's still spectacular in every way for them. Probably that.

Should a Sox fan WANT Mauer to stay in Minn?
Been thinking about this. If the end goal is a championship, then you should not want the Yanks to solidify one of the toughest positions to get offense at. Also, Mauer signing in Minnesota might hamstring the franchise's finances even more than they have been. My apologies if this has had its own thread before, was hoping to at least put it in a different light than past discussions.

You would think a guy his age would want 2 years. Also I feel like if 2 years for 14 was really on the table, the yes would have been given by now.

Damon has done wrestling promos and appearances with AJP, right? Not that this matters but just wondering how well he knows guys on this team.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2010 -> 02:15 PM) She's like a Subaru. She has a cult-like following, but fortunately, won't ever build up major market position. Too much plastic. i would think she'll be popular enough to win the GOP nomination but couldnt possibly be respected enough to win a general - barring total disaster happening as a precursor to that election year

what would Branyan command?
Hawk would go bananas for this. When Branyan was with Cleveland, he hyped him up nearly to Gomez heights.

Joe Mauer Signs for 10 years?
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 09:39 PM) I like this move for baseball, hate it for the Sox. Then again maybe this puts Minn even more firmly entrenched in cheapskate mode -- meanwhile the Yankees are kept away from landing an All-World bat at the most difficult position to fill in that way. No doubt they'll be strong but the thought of them with this guy at C gets em from very good to extremely good.
