  1. This seems to be a consensus about Floyd, or at least not just Mark, I should say I heard Matt Thornton on the Score once, and he was asked a bunch of questions. Amongst them: "If the whole team was stranded on a desert island, who would be eaten first?" Without missing a beat, Thornton said "Gavin Floyd." Obviously it's a joke, but it's a way of saying he's the nicest guy on the team. Or maybe least aggressive. In any event, Buehrle can be a tough guy all he wants, but I'd rather he have Floyd's stuff right now than his own mindset.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2008 -> 02:19 PM) Trying for the jinx, are we? jinx is northside talk as you know.
  3. fortunately this is shaping up to look like the classic runs-allowed-but-save from Jenks.
  4. Stone: I thought he would be running before. ! hilarious
  5. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) We do not string hits along, and we have a hard time driving in runs outside of the long ball. Good teams keep the ball the park and usually have good pitching and defense. Our relief lately has had a problem throwing strikes and getting ahead of hitters. this results in a lot of hitters counts and free bases. what gives me some hope is the sizable difference in OBP from the '05 to '08 teams even though this team isnt as well rounded as that one, i'm going into this postseason with the same expectations as that year. i figure we're not the best team in the league, but we'll see if we can steal a series or two. that year, we did. well, and then some, b/c pitching appeared. this year it might have to be a real steal.
  6. such a weird feeling being a fan of this team and watching a strikeout pitcher. starting.
  7. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 05:33 PM) Uribe. Let me propose this. Crede's range on diving plays is a more helpful trait than anything Uribe provides. Offense or Defense.
  8. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) Awesome recovery by Javy. Loads the bases with nobody out and only allows 1 quasi-unearned run. Like I said a few days ago: there is not f***ing grace period for Joe Crede. Either he's close to his '05/'06 levels or he shouldn't be playing. He doesn't get 2-3 weeks to "find it". What's the solution? Underperforming Fields, Uribe who everyone has apparently absolved after nonstop absolutely hating, or an All-Star? EDIT: yes that last word was meant to madden all, but the point stands.
  9. All in all, good recovery by Javy. Usually he folds like a WWE ringside chair in that situation.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) I can't believe some people still try to argue that he's a good defensive player. well he hasnt been bad this year because of bad judgments like that one he's been bad in my view b/c he's hurt and not getting off the throws like he used to and not gloving it as well
  11. I actually am glad that he looked pissed at himself after catching that popup
  12. That is so unbelievably stupid
  13. Anyone who brings up OC's comments about Scioscia being the best manager he has played under... Hope no one who dislikes that has also criticized Guillen's in-game managing. If so, then you're likely agreeing with Orlando, no?
  14. HOLLA aaaa
  15. Couple big bats sit down.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:26 PM) I'm not about to put Jon Adkins in my rotation, Darin Erstad in centerfield, or Ben Davis at catcher any time soon. He looked like he had completely flamed out as a prospect and the Sox found something in him. Jon Adkins wasnt as high a pick as those other two guys
  17. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) The av and post work well together. meaning your comment fit well with Mr Perfect's expression. but hey at least a couple OC people sprouted up here now. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) Why not just trade Garland for a couple of prospects? Because we needed a top of the order hitter badly, and Cabrera provides some of that for the present. And ...well, 76 wins later, it has worked. That's why I more directed this topic towards personality speculations, as opposed to performance. It has been there, filled a need. Jon's pretty much been Jon.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:17 PM) Ha, it's looking like you're the only person who likes OC, Princess Dye. The av and post work well together. I wouldnt say I like him. Or hate him. I dont know him, so I dont see it as my place to make rash judgments.
  19. Cabrera seems to be one of the more animated guys in the post homerun and victory celebrations Alexei looks like pure death after he hits homeruns in the dugout. Of course, based on his production, we dont fault him for it. Since Alexei is emotionless (visibly) during most games, are we to believe he doesnt want to be on the team? I wouldnt make that jump, and I dont know that we can make that jump regarding OC either. They're just different personalities. We cant purport to know what they're thinking, as much fun as it might be.
  20. QUOTE (C_LEE45 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) yo OC keep that spot warm for A-RAM Brings up a sub-question..what have you guys thought of Alexei's SS play in the limited amount we've seen it? I think I can remember 2 errors at shortstop for ARam, actually
  21. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:01 PM) I think the better question is why any OC love? -His fielding is incredibly over-rated. I wasn't a big Cabrera follower before he got to the Sox, but I was always under the impression he played pretty sound D. His lazy efforts and incredibly poor timed errors left me surprised to say the least. -His bat leaves alot to be desired, especially in the lead-off spot. I know he can't control where he bats in the lineup, but it still contributes to my dislike. He doesn't have as much power as I thought he would coming over to the Cell, his OBP is poor for a top of the order hitter, and his "smallball" techniques leave a lot to be desired, which I thought Cabrera was well known for. -The whole scorekeeper controversy was probably a bit overblown, but it still looked bad. On top of it, he doesn't seem to fit all that well in the clubhouse( I have no inside knowledge), and Williams has hinted at being a bit surprised at what he got back in Cabrera. I said it a few days ago to some friends of mine, and I stand by it. Cabrera is probably my least favorite White Sox starter in the last 6-7 years. All your points make sense, but then that last line.... it just seems a little harsh to put him sub Erstad, no? Actually you're putting him sub-many guys who were way worse. I think when a guy carries himself like OC does, it makes people react a little harsher to whatever stats he does put up. Freaking BA gets on the recent All-time Favorite Sox list and yet puts up nowhere near the consistency OC does.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 07:53 PM) He is half-assed, and an overrated defender, nothing near what I thought he was with the Red Sox and Angels. There were a couple of times when he was hot that I started warming up to him, but he is pretty lackluster overall. He's an above average SS, that's all though. It's kind of frightening that of our starters he's 5th in batting avg. I'm not going to talk up his offense a ton, but we at least have to appreciate that he's a leadoff hitter on THIS team. Without him up there we would be even more station-to-station than we already are.
  23. Very glad to find my own thread ending up being pointless. I just started a new one that will likely head towards the same fate, most mine do.
