  1. well he just said on the Score that he doesnt really want a new bulldozer. plus i guess that Furcal line of thinking that the crazy money will be even more ridiculous in 3 yrs.
  2. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) You think they are going to pay Javier Vazquez that much money and cause him to upset the lockerrom by having him as a long reliever. Be serious. Ozzie would handle that situation, if it had to be done, better than any manager i can think of. but the point is, our moves have taken out Duque/Vizcaino...and (in whatever roles) brought in McCarthy/Vazquez. i just dont see how you can't like that 2 for 2 switch. it's totally beyond me.
  3. getting Vazquez does not mean he 100% absolutely has to be a starter. could be a reliever by midyear.... and we'd STILL have better pitching than last year. if McCarthy is what everyone is so sure he'll be (and fast)... then he'll be the #5. Vazquez to long relief. Ozzie will have no problem making that switch if it makes the team better. even with this in mind, Vazquez is going to be more reliable for a whole year than the 41-yr old Duque. Viz was loseable, and Young was behind a lot of OFs in the organization. have to like that trade. i dont read this as pushing Contreras out at all. he doesnt make that much next year, so i believe we'll go into 06 with these 6 guys, and then the year after we'll be prepared for one of them leaving.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 28, 2005 -> 02:00 PM) BTW, just my two cents, but this makes me hate the Vazquez trade now. seeing as how we didnt give up anything irreplaceable for Vazquez, i'm liking that one too. if mccarthy is now the long reliever, he's gonna be better than Vizcaino. and then we'd likely need him year after next in the rotation. it all still makes sense.
  5. these guys played hard and had some big moments for us. they weren't big money disappointments, or whiners. every team needs PR, PH types in order to win.... so i'm not seeing why so many people here have to be so classless on seeing them move on.
  6. both Jon and Jose know that the Sox can play em one more year, and their value could come down after a weaker 05-06 campaign. i'm also thinking Jose is the more likely of the two to have a setback next year. not just age, but over his MLB career he has been less consistent than Garland. and whoa that is pretty inconsistent. so maybe for these reasons, coupled with the fact that he's had a tough time getting comfortable in the majors... he'll take a reasonable extension. so even though 2 yrs 15 would be a slap in the face....i really do think he'll get at least a little less than 2 years for 20. and if it's a ways less, then i'd infer that to mean he is, in truth, 48 years old.
  7. QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Dec 19, 2005 -> 10:55 PM) but its really up top garland, if he doesnt wanna be here.. then theirs no use in trying. it's very easy to read this as "he doesnt wanna be here." but what it is... is simply Garland trying to get his market value. he's a young pitcher coming off a career year. what he wants is to play here, for the money he has coming. you can be annoyed by the Blue Jays contracts all you want, but face facts that prices go up. that's just what happens. think back to all those rotations in between Black Jack and Buehrle. Reinsdorf was very unwilling to commit big money to the rotation. that's a big part of what held us back. in recent years, we've locked up a few guys at (what was then) top dollar. to some extent, all these guys got to work with Coop for a long time before this ring. we've seen what just being comfortable can do for a pitcher like Contreras... and you could say the same for Freddy too. so, in short, if Jerry can't adapt to the changing salaries for pitchers, he shouldnt be a baseball owner (again, not that he's officially gone one way or another yet). it's the same thing we say about Royals/Pirates type spending... so we have to hold our own management...even in these happy times...to that same standard, no? and while i believe all this, i'll still say that i'd prefer a 2 yr contract to Contreras than something huge for Jon. but lets call it what it is, and not demonize Jon. he wants his value, and he'll get it somewhere.
  8. teams break up. Kenny has improved our offense.... and he's making sure the pitching staff is not dominating the roster with overblown salaries. seeing as how this is the same line of thinking he used when putting together last year's team...... don't you have to respect that? funny how going cheap with Dye instead of Ordonez was never something fans castigated KW about.... yet here we are waving goodbye to Aaron Rowand, bringing in Jim Thome and Javier Vazquez........ and now KW is evil. unbelievable.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) We gave up our top hitting prospect and our top pitching prospect for two players who are definite question marks. If we don't acquire another team's top prospect for Jon Garland, then I think that's a bad trade by Garland. prospects? yawn. i want to make the moves that solidify our LH pen and CF spot. if that means Garland being moved... i'm going to look at the replacement -- Vazquez -- and say... that switch will be worth it. that is if we're filling LHRP and CF with solid players. as far as restocking the farm system.... i dont get your sense of immediacy. we're positioning ourselves to be contenders for a few years in a row here. if all goes well, the young prospects we have ..even right now... shouldnt see the field anyway. restocking the farm system with trades is so Tampa anyway. hasnt KW taught us anything? win now. and it worked. believe it or not, trading a bunch of prospects for Carl Everett twice actually WORKED.
  10. North's quote on this almost made it seem like he "decided" not to take the job. Please. the White Sox aren't going to risk the reputation they're rebuliding for a classless blowhard.
  11. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) Just stop posting in this thread for a while. You're not doing yourself any favors by explaining yourself. ugh. all i ever wanted to say here was that Frank wouldnt fit on next year's team now. a statement most people would agree with.
  12. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 02:25 PM) And when the hell did he ever whine about PK getting too much attention? they butted heads early in Paulie's time here... and David Wells joined in on PK's behalf, criticizing Frank's durability, if you remember that part of it. of course Frank had the last laugh because Wells broke down too, after his own whining session.
  13. QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 02:23 PM) How has a "thanks FT" thread turned into complaining about him..? Good grief.. again, not what i intended.
  14. and by making me explain this to you so thoroughly, you're making me seem to be a Frank-hater or something... which i dont want to be. so lets leave it be. just realize that he has had that superstar-ego in the past... it is what it is... and my point is that a guy like that should move on in a situation like this. for himself and for us.
  15. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 02:14 PM) How else am I supposed to take that? You flat out said he would do his usual "whining" for at-bats routine come May. That's never, ever happened. how is this not getting through? he does his "usual whining"..... this time it would happen to be for atbats. do you understand what i'm saying? before it was because Paulie was getting attention. before it's been because he wanted to 1b and not DH, and later it was because he wanted to be DH and not 1b.
  16. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 02:07 PM) When has Frank ever whined for at-bats? you read that a little different than what i meant. throughout his career, he has done a 'vague-whining' thing in general. he doesnt clarify what he's being pissy about, he just does it and clams up. if you're forgetting that, then you apparently havent stopped with the champagne yet. i like Frank and i'm not putting him down. i'm just saying that when you've been the kind of superstar he once was.... it can be a difficult transition to a lesser role.
  17. Frank will be the DH for a possible contender, but not ours unfortunately. i think if it came down to spot duty for us.... and ANY situation where he can chase 500 HRs.... then it's an easy decision to make. part of me wishes Frank would come back and be a bat off the bench... but i have to think that his departure at this point would be for the best. yes, we had a LOT of good vibes this october... but as the Red Sox can tell you, the next year it all evaporates...and i fear Frank would be doing his usual vague-whining for at-bats by May.
  18. and i honestly feel some White Sox fans are more outraged than Rowand himself. why? because players realize first hand that this is part of their business. this is one of the reasons they make so much money. they can be moved at any time. they've seen it happen to teammates regularly. losing the heart-and-soul stings now, but the 06-07 team is going to have a new heart-and-soul. that slot always seems to get filled...
  19. QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Nov 24, 2005 -> 11:10 AM) I cant believe they did this to AROW the day before THANKSGIVING! WTF? I AM ONE PISSED OFF SOXFAN! We just blew out the heart of the team! I cant believe you guys arent outraged at the move and the timing of the move! THIS IS TOTAL CRAP BS! "heart of the team?" if thats the best thing you can say about Rowand, then i have to tell you... it'll be forgotten by the time Thome has a 4 HR week. what Rowand does well... you can get elsewhere. it's cold but true.... you can replace Rowand, even if this thing doesnt work out. but Thome at his best is a SECOND PAULIE.
  20. how replaceable is Aaron? once we're done being sad about this, the answer is very. a heartless thought this early, but i cant help it. Aaron's hitting is definitely lighter than what you'd expect from the starting CF on a world series team. and he's definitely not one of those guys who hits for low average yet still seems to always get the big hit. what makes him a starter is the glove, but honestly... you can get someone that good without too much trouble. Meanwhile, Thome is one of those players, when healthy, you have a lot of trouble replacing. Thome at his best is going to do a ton more for this lineup than Aaron has. and even with its world series rings, i didnt want that lineup going into another year where it would depend so much on that pitching staff. thanks to this, i think we have just found ourselves a lot more ways to win games.
  21. i think Aaron's going to be missed most of all because of off-the-field reasons. he had a very unassuming personality...in interviews he was pretty much talking like a fan would. almost a surprising level of honesty in some of his comments. that said, when i look at Rowand and Thome.... when each of them are hitting their best, i cant honestly say there's any comparison. you can replace Rowand's fielding (gasp, yes)... but it's much harder to get your hands on this kind of lefty power. Philly is willing to take on some salary, so Kenny had no choice but to pounce on that.
  22. excellent, good to hear from the paper i used to read back in the college days (and actually i wrote for Buzz kind of recently)
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 07:51 PM) Is this Hawk being very awkward in the chanting of Paulie at the parade? he had the accents backwards. " PAWlee ! PAWlee ! " is wrong didnt he hear enough of these to know?
  24. and this is a different level from VERY GOOD (also in caps though)
