  1. Montas is going nowhere. They dont have the strong desire to upgrade Flowers. If they were going to do it, it was going to be Martin. Other options not worth it right now since Flowers is worth his (small) salary.
  2. On paper we're hoping/praying to be as strong as the Oakland team last year. Just hoping to be at that point. Dont rule out returns to the mean from Conor/Eaton/LaRoche. Frighteningly C too. The defense from RF/3B do not inspire confidence. we dont even know 2B yet. So hopefully that cools the highest optimism jets considerably. But the point isnt to be the most talented team in MLB, it's just to get in. Once you're in, the chaos of baseball can/will take over.
  3. Hawk Harrelson is so utterly reviled nationally. Internationally. Interplanetary.
  4. QUOTE (MAX @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 02:52 PM) Those are different situations entirely. Please see the other thread about this topic. MAX, have you rooted for teams with pitchers who doctor the ball? Cheating is a long time part of our game's honored past.
  5. The first wave of steroid users destroyed the record books mystique of baseball. That was the massive damage. The later era guys are just drugging themselves to stay ahead of the competition like NFL guys do. NFL is not broken. NFL players are just seen as machines, and now MLB is to be enjoyed in the same way. Players are still cheating, have always cheated, will continue to cheat forever. Now we all just know what it is and it's on the table.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) The part of the steroid red flag you haven't acknowledged is the guys who have their production fall off a lot once they're off the steroids. It's a red flag with its own specific particulars, yeah. Conversely, we can pay Rios to just be Rios. Clean and meh. I think any way you factor it in, 3 yrs is great. If he's caught then we're out of the consequences in pretty quick fashion. Over the next three years we are most likely not a WS winner, so this is our stab at it. If we're not the champs then this contract was just another 3 yr way of losing, like anything else was. The roid aspect doesnt give it any extra/less weight more than anything else.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) wink. Yeah, I'm not even going to bother making a steroid joke, but if you're making the last 2 moves you have to make this one. the steroid era was great. now my kids can make heroes out of people who actually deserve it and these jocks can just be exposed as jocks (not humanity's saviors) who entertain me and nothing else. melky's past is just a red flag in the same way other players have red flags. if he's suspended then our LF goes back to being equal to what Viciedo's WAR was going to be. 0. So we just bank on it not happening as we would any other injury flare up. That's where we're at. It's a red flag of no larger importance than another.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 14, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) Its cute that people on Twitter think the Sox and Cubs' off-seasons are comparable. The Cubs' doesnt have to be ..because of the wealth of talent in the system. That's the difference and why we did what we did. But hey keeping Tim Anderson and the other top flight ones....that is the biggest victory of all. We redefined things and held onto our win-laters as well.
  9. moved to the more appropriate thread, but in short: he preferred our east-ness to seattle
  10. Enrique Rojas/ESPN ‏@Enrique_Rojas1 45m45 minutes ago Florida, US Nadie ofreció 4 años y Melky Cabrera escogió oferta de equipo menos alejado del este de USA. Será un #WhiteSox y no #Mariners Translation: No one offered 4 years, so Melky went with the furthest East team that offered 3. Thus knocking out the Mariners.
  11. Avisail in RF is not sitting well with me. But you can't have it all and there is the hope he'll improve. It's weird to realize now that...........being win-now.....we suddenly have less patience for Avi coming along than we once did. Were the core of the lineup bashing, I'd want RF locked down defensively. Mid-year. Be it Avi or a glove-first replacement for him
  12. Gotta build interest in the team and create some excitement around here. This is a nice step towards that. Look at the attendance figures during Konerko's era. The fanbase can be jumpstarted. Right or wrong, people around here got really down on guys like Dunn and Rios. In the case of Rios I think it was more the image he put out there than production (as he had some really good stretches with us). Maybe the new guys become a repeat of that, but you have to try and hope this bunch becomes an era the fanbase rallies around. Seems like so long ago when this team had a core group that the fans invented reasons to find lovable. Hell AJ was lovable here.
  13. flagship station should send this fantasy football show to the sidelines based on this news. we are allergic to building interest in this team it seems please though, more SUVs on the warning track and t-shirt cannons.
  14. In light of Kemp to Padres, has Quentin to Chicago been discussed at all? Buy low and surplus OF in SD?
  15. Makes it sound like they're stepping back for a bit Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 2m2 minutes ago Hahn: "we are going to head back to Chicago, regroup & try to knock off a few more targets on our list. In our opinion, we're not done yet'
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) It takes a long time to get somebody drunk enough that Viciedo looks good to them. beER goggles
  17. Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 1m1 minute ago Source: White Sox in serious talks with Mariners on moving Viciedo. Targeting a reliever in return

  19. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) Would you guys trade Danks for Ethier + cash given how tight we are for money? Not saying I would do it as I am not a huge Ethier fan, but strictly on needs and money standpoint. It has to be a lot of money. And OF defense is a big problem right now. Avi and Ethier is going to make us quite dependent on our pitchers K-rates
  20. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) You will be sorely disappointed over the next four years ..... Hahn's Dunn. Lets not totally dismiss this. I'm excited for this year but age + relievers being mercurial --- this is absolutely a candidate for a bomb of a move. For the next two years I expect to be really happy and the key for us is making our closer worthwhile by having a good team behind him. Otherwise, why have him. The silver lining of course is we could move this guy if we're instantly bad midyear. Or midyear 2016.
  21. Will be interesting to see if the next five years of Semien equal, surpass or are less than the production of the Gordon Beckham era
  22. Chicago White Sox ‏@whitesox 28s28 seconds ago IT'S OFFICIAL: #WhiteSox acquire Jeff Samardzija & Michael Ynoa from @Athletics in exchange for 4 players.
  23. Welp, it's all about keeping Anderson. This is what it cost. Fine by me.
