Possible Suitors for Gordon Beckham
When Gordon was young, Harold Reynolds picked him for a TV segment i watched on 'young potential HoF guys.' Now, that on its face is so silly and hilarious now.. ...but if you think about just trade value and Gordon B. ........this year would be more than just a bounceback year. If he puts together rookie year numbers this year.....then you have a guy who was highly touted REGAINING some form. That, for the salary he makes..is enticing to teams. That is more than just trading a guy who got hot for half a year. You might be able to trade Gordon for something not-at-all-shabby this deadline, if he keeps improving on what he's doing right now. That would be big. And then it frees the money for other things, frees the spot for Semien/Micah.

Possible Suitors for Gordon Beckham
You trade Beckham, not Semien. Beckham is no longer cheap labor. And for what he gives you, you definitely prefer to go with cheap labor if you can. Rather than pay that...for that.

The 'is-post-injury-danks good' debate is an interesting one because the answer is unquestionably no, yet the battle rages on

GM Rick Hahn's Tenure
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 15, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) Peavy trade None of these have done anything in particular to change my mind. Avisail under team control is big. You win when you get production on nice cheap labor deals, and free up space for other acquisitions. I love how financially things shape up here on out, and this move is a part of that.

Keppinger DFA'd
QUOTE (JoshPR @ May 14, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) Pick your poison... Sorry my spite for dumb players is showing De Aza's WAR each year here 2.6 (limited time), 2.7, 2.2. Perhaps that is an aging player, but it still is someone who was undoubtedly a contributor. I can understand Jordan Danks as purely a defensive OF, but right now we need a well-rounded guy playing everyday, and that's De Aza. If the bat does not return to form, this will be it for him..but in the context of 2014 he absolutely is getting whatever leash necessary. If Trayce T was ready, that'd be a different story...but that is a not-yet situation.

Hawk interview today
Another thing to consider is that hawk is a relic of the past. what's about to come is extreme efficiency from like every single MLB announcer til the end of time, so lets at least hold on to the relics for a bit and enjoy while we can

sox need to trade alexei once out of contention
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 8, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) Semien has spent the majority of his time at SS, and for the long term plan of the Sox, he will probably need to move back there to fit either Sanchez or Johnson into the lineup at some point. I don't think Alexei gets traded because there won't be a market for him. Almost all of the teams that will be in contention have long term solutions at the position with the exception of the Yankees, and I don't see them making a play for a SS until next winter. Doubtful to me that the Sox are considering Semien or Sanchez to be building blocks. Semien is looking at utility role unless pro-career-long K problems get snipped.

sox need to trade alexei once out of contention
Third best player on the team, plays a position where we dont have much else at all. MLB has parity (and MLB asks you to get into the playoffs, basically. getting in is the goal). so trading him means you dont think we're going to compete 15, 16 etc. But we would have to be really bad to not compete. To find that much defense with palatable offense is really difficult at SS. The weird thing is the Sox have the things you seek ...ace, SS, possible all-star cleanup type guy...............but the replaceable stuff just isnt in yet. Bodes well for '15 though. Striking distance. Round out the rotation, pen, and C.

White Sox Winner!!!
The horrifying part of the Cubs offense is that they are in the lowest spots of league-wide offense BEFORE you adjust for their home park, all parks etc

White Sox Winner!!!
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) No. By my metric, you don't measure a guy's "stuff", especially a non -power pitcher, simply by the radar gun. Absolutely true if there is evidence that he has everything else you need in today's game to offset lack of velocity. Some guys do have those things. Danks since injury has not proven he has enough of those things to be Effective again. if you think of the post-injury Danks as 'effective' then we have different sets of standards, i guess.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) Soxtalk's opinion on John Danks "stuff"= whatever the radar gun says. If it says 88, he obviously has nothing even though he isn't being hit hard. By your metric then, the only way a pitcher can be bad is if the most recent outcome was poor? I'd advise you to look at Danks overall since injury and then tell me you're pleased with what he is now. I am not.

'kyle'? I always read it as 'kyiiiee' also, before the season i got into an argument with Matt Spiegel on twitter about his all-city team having Castro over AR

Bernstein Column
Quite simply, the bad thing about Rizzo is that we've already seen him be mediocre. We have never seen Abreu be mediocre. Abreu is more unknown but we've never seen low lows. So really there is no point to this til sample sizes increase.

5/7 vs Cubs
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:48 PM) Thankfully that piece of s*** pitched over terrible defense. We dont have to all assume the people we're arguing against are taking wildly extreme viewpoints. Has Danks been good enough since returning from the injury? No. Clearly not. Are we open to him either (1) changing in order to gain a new form of effectiveness (2) getting the velocity back? Absolutely.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 7, 2014 -> 08:39 PM) Danks has always been an off speed pitcher. Not sure how he relied on velocity. Non-fireballers arent hurt by velocity dips? Surely that cant be your meaning
-
5/7 vs Cubs
This is a perfect example of outcome-based evaluation vs thought process. Danks was bad before that home run; some here just chose not to see it. Bad as defined by -- he cant do the things he's strong at anymore.......as he relied on velocity. He has to totally change as a pitcher if he's going to get back to being really solid like he was several yrs ago. Cubs have an awful offense so the things being said about Danks aren't based off this, but rather larger samples.

Gillaspie coming off of DL?
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 7, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) I'd rather see Semien work through his struggles in the majors, but I don't expect SS2K and the Beckham fan club to agree. They're pretty emotionally invested in him. By sending him down you actually get more future Semien, as his free agency would be delayed a year if he spends another 1.5 months in the minors. Meanwhile i want Beckham playing, and i am really no fan. I want him producing for a bit so we can ship the guy out, as that is basically something that needs to happen based on what he costs/what he gives. He's too costly to be glove-only 2b.
-
Gillaspie coming off of DL?
Also semien struck out a ton in the minors. so, while 'starting 2b' or something is a possible end result for him, it is by no means out of the realm of possibility that we have a utility guy here that just happens to have some pop. As far as his clutchness, lets remember that bad hitters want runners on base. runners being on base make them more successful hitters. when these guys dont have runners on base.. then you tend to see their...unvarnished..suckage Whether a guy has been clutch in the end means nothing as far what he'll do in the future. Do you want Craig Counsell in the bottom of ninth of Game 7, because he has done it before? Or do you want Joe Mauer, who has never been there before? Obviously you want a talented guy over a guy who has-been-clutch. What Semien did is great, but it doesnt say anything about who he is. It is just some stuff-that-he-did. When he changes fully what kind of hitter he is, i am awaiting him w/ open arms. but he has not done that. he just got some hits here and there basically. runners on: .799 OPS No runners on: .440 OPS

We can't argue that you aren't sad, but it is dangerously close to being a case where we can argue that you aren't sad this might be landmark work we're doing here
