  1. Hawk really overdoes it with his emphasis on thought process holding hitters back. Some people are talented, some aren't. There have been some Grade A empty-headed individuals with .380 OBP. The "mental midget" complaint is at best overused, at worst a fabrication.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 01:30 PM) What has Viciedo done to make anyone think he will be special though? If you only give a shot to the guys that have proven they are likely to be special, you are leaving stones unturned all over your organization. Look, not saying everyone deserves an extended shot at the major league level. But for me, it's: *the AAA totals *the hundred at-bats he had in the majors in 2010 *his age *the fact that right now there's no one blocking him........ all that's enough for me to say -- "lets get an extended look, we aren't likely to win a title this year, so at the very least lets sit him against some righties but otherwise let him prove himself" If this was another organization with tons of talented OFs, my line of thought on this might be too forgiving. But that's not where we're at.
  3. So many guys in the league are just "guys" What is worth it is finding out if this guy can shore up a few things and be special. I wouldn't normally give such a long leash on such a project, but facts are that we aren't favored to contend right now. Playing Fukudome might add some wins right now but I'm not quite ready to concede developing Viciedo. He has had a year where he held off on his free swinging. It's not a lost cause, just a difficult one. There are a lot of difficult causes if you aren't at the Rangers/Tigers/Yankees payroll level.
  4. It'll come off as kneejerk, but Fukudome needs at-bats on a regular basis. He works counts, has awareness at the plate
  5. Jermaine Dye is simply like many athletes having difficulty coping with the spotlight instantly leaving them after it had followed them for a decade. A problem I have never had. Gavin well done.
  6. Nothing at all out of line being said by southsider. We spent months just now hammering last year's team for how bad things were. I don't think it's right to take these first games and consider Dunn cured, Peavy cured, etc. But I think it's just a matter of believing they can still be who they were on past teams.....or believing it when you see it.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 12:22 PM) A .500 season with development from the kids is all you can ask from this season. I'm not an undying optimist usually.... but we have to factor in a few things: 1) the central has a lot of W's out there for the taking 2) yanks and boston have flaws 3) we were highly touted last year, and the roster has not changed that dramatically since last year. I think we ignore #3 because the failures of last year were so painful. But failures in a baseball season can be cured by--voila-- a new baseball season. It's one route, at least, considering how mercurial the game itself is.
  8. There is zero chance we pick up the option, and it is unheard of for a guy to get denied the option and then give his hometeam a discount as a result of him feeling like he didn't live up to the money the past few years. Jake is at the exact right age to sign a huge money short years contract with NYY. That is, if he keeps this up, of course.
  9. Heh, so who's the fifth starter..Floyd or Danks
  10. When you hear Hawk talk like that about Rios, you have to read between the lines -- because he's so undyingly positive....but he must've thought Alex's 2011 was an unmotivated pile of dung
  11. Joe McEwing wrote something on a piece of paper , ran down and handed it to Alexei
  12. Gordon attempting a bunt!! We are entering a new era with him right now
  13. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Apr 23, 2012 -> 11:05 PM) I don't think Lillibridge is much better of an OF than Viciedo... if not now I think as he gets more and more time out there it will be very apparent. You should want Lillibridge charging hard at borderline gappers over Viciedo.
  14. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 23, 2012 -> 11:00 PM) Viciedo seems to anxious to go out and get the pitch, lunging out a lot. First base depth is kind of an issue right now. Lilli? You'll want him to play LF late in the game. Flowers?
  15. Have to love this guy. Love all those Pierre at-bats now being put to some use.
  16. Due to lack of a bunting pedigree, I hate to say this but Beckham may not even really have the tools to bat 9th....
  17. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 23, 2012 -> 10:34 PM) It's looking more and more like Peavy has to be the Sox starter for game one of the playoffs. What a convoluted way you have of proposing some trade we'd be making w/ Boston
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 23, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) What channel is this on, on U-Verse? 691
