  1. For a really distant frame of reference, the NY Knicks did this in 08-09 with a team that started out the gate surprisingly well, and its bloated contract players were finally producing. But because of the financial strain they decided to blow it up one month in...they traded talent (overpaid talent mind you, but still talent) ...Zach Randolph, Jamal Crawford and thus the team stunk the rest of the year, and stunk for a few more years til a total overhaul was possible. A stretch of a parallel of course, but then again with Jerry R. as your owner it's easier to think of baseball as being capped...so maybe it's not such a stretch. The biggest difference of course...is that in the NBA you dont want to be a middle-of-the-road team. In baseball middle-of-the-road is still striking distance, at least as far as a one year outlook.
  2. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 05:16 PM) You are correct, Sir. This is one time where it's an overreaction to jump all over Rios for not running to first on that. What you and your "reasoned logic" have to understand is this board has several "old school" individuals that are so Chicago tough, so Clint Eastwood-like, that their fire and passion doesn't allow for common sense crap like that. These guys are rough and tumble, take no quarter, and still make the world go around from their rocking chairs.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 03:13 PM) Just seems like no matter how Ventura configures the lineup, there are 3 guys in it you just know have no chance to contribute that day. Overall lack of talent on the roster. This isn't aimed at you, but I think all of us (me included) are going to spend 150 games finding creative ways of phrasing that problem. Overall lack of talent on the roster.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:57 PM) Morel should take 5 minutes to apologize to each individual that was at the game tonight. Nice. Two layers.
  5. Hawk really needs to get ahold of himself. Unbelievably unprofessional on that last play as Betemit is simply throwing someone out at first. Routine.
  6. lol! Now before Gordon Beckham at-bats, we show his past defensive highlights! lol!
  7. I was 10 for the first Bulls championship and remember Game 1 vs. LAL vividly. Unfortunately absolutely nothing in the banks regarding '85 Bears, as much as I wish I could report otherwise. I do remember Payton and McMahon but not in a trophy-holding context unfortunately. Fortunately the White Sox haven't done enough for me to need much more than early-to-mid 90s and '05.
  8. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 02:47 PM) I wish we would have traded him 2 years ago Not you specifically, but I get the feeling that a lot of people here HATE HATE HATE when Kenny trades younger/unproven guys...except when it's a bad one that he didn't trade. When it's Beckham. When its Brian Anderson. I'm going to say the following, and I think it's a calm approach... I want us to have a mix of farmhands we keep and farmhands we trade. If there's a guy that is capable of handling 2b or 3b and is under team control for a long time, and comes with high expectations...... I'm not going to be crushed if we hold onto him. It's so easy to say we should have traded Beckham in a package for Adrian Gonzalez. But (1) it would have been part of a package (2) this is a guy who was projected to be an all-star IF under team control. Under that set of circumstances, a guy like that is not getting traded for a rental. It's just not happening, so there's no reason to lose sleep over it. Beckham wasn't going anywhere unless the deal was unreal for us. Instead of regreting individual moves (constantly), we need to just look at overall what the organization's mindset is and judge that. Any team is going to have some good and bad moves, but the real test is over time how well their approach seems to have fared.
  9. There's no real dilemma. Right now he has no trade value, but he handles 2b fine defensively. If he ends up having a good year, he boosts his value some and he helps us win. If he doesn't, we're back where we started. If anyone really believed Lilli or Escobar could instead play the position and lead us to a playoff spot, then there'd be a move to make. But I don't think anyone really believes that. Lilli's success unfortunately is a pretty small sample size and fails the in depth numbers test. You could see a change at 2b maybe halfway to 3/4 through the year, but injuries aside I wouldnt expect one any sooner.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) Chen is a lefty...you've got to be kidding me with this lineup. If Lillibridge was going to be used primarily as a defensive replacement, he should have been traded this offseason when a lot of teams were asking about him. If anything of real value had been offered for Lilli, his bags would have been packed immediately Teams ask about everyone but the strength of the deal is what's key.
  11. We can't hit. As is, we had gifts given to us due to their awful defensive play (especially at 1b)
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2012 -> 03:19 PM) Mark Gonzales ‏ @MDGonzales Sox and P Kip Wells have parted ways, less than two weeks after he agreed to a minor league deal and was headed to extended spring training If the Sox don't put him on the postseason roster for the 2000 Playoffs, I'll be furious.
  13. Cowley is entertaining. I agree with almost nothing he does, but I do read/follow. That is all enabled by the fact that I'm entertained but I don't take his stance/methods too seriously. And most of all, I don't take them as being horribly detrimental to the team. When the White Sox don't have drama, they actually get forgotten by a lot of the Chicagoland populace. If we want attention drawn to our wins, and thus attendance+dollars that later help free agency (if we believe that narrative) then we should want a writer with an axe to grind constantly writing about us. I actually enjoy these last few wins more because of how hard negative Cowley went on us this past offseason.
  14. This is not coming from a KW-hater, but it really is mind-boggling to think about how much of the way Kenny has done business the last 2-3 years has been bailed out by Konerko having these great years beyond his prime. Think about how bad we'd be offensively. I didn't share in the pessimism for 2012 as much as others, but I do have it for 2013.....unless free agency is surprisingly kind to us once the Peavy contract is off the books.
  15. Can Flowers play 1B? If so, I like the idea of using him late in games that Dunn is playing first. Could stun an opposing manager who brings in LHP to face Dunn
  16. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 14, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) Is anyone else having 2005 deja vu's? That group of Rios, Beckham, Morel..... I am going to hold back the highest expectations until I get 2 of those 3 guys showing me they can be consistently passable.
  17. When facing a great hitting team like this one, I am perfectly fine with them splitting up their 3-4-5 with some impulsive risk-taking strategies.
  18. The way Gordo has swung the bat the past few years he should become a monk
  19. The outrage of all this is ferociously minimized by the total and undeniable unimportance of "Power Rankings."
  20. Lets be realistic. You can't spend the entire year using Ohman for one batter a game. I think what was nice about today is they DID use him situationally to get the all important out. And then, because he was up by many runs, they decided to use him against further batters. Ozzie --on his not so smart days-- might've done this in a tight ballgame. I'm glad Robin did it in one where he had a big lead.
  21. Fix up just a couple spots in the lineup. I actually think the team would be 80-85 wins with a slight improvement at 3b, and intra-roster improvements at 2b and rf. Lilli, Fuk.
  22. Someone here suggested Beckham can still eventually be the #2 hitter. When the same dog bites you three different times, the same way, you are culpable.
  23. I am ready to debut. I hope it doesn't end with less than 1 IP and a middle finger as I walk off.
  24. name change to "Jose Paniagua" ? Hoping not taken..
