  1. Deadpool was an alright movie but after hearing a million times how great it was before I saw it it was a let down. Soft bias of low expectations for superhero movies.
  2. Well, FWIW, Boston Internet seems to think it was a fair trade or an overpay. Lots of worries about Sale's health and pitching in Fenway. I'm starting to think it makes sense to keep Q, unless they get a similar package for him.
  3. QUOTE (Real @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:20 PM) watched very little baseball last year. mainly radio and at bat app feeds Sanchez was a HUGE story. I was checked out and couldn't help but see his name everywhere. He put up some Ruthian like numbers for about 50 games, and it was for the Yankees so of course it got magnified every more.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 11:31 PM) And I find it rather disgusting that you can't avoid making it personal the moment someone disagrees with you and takes a different opinion of available information. I made a point about baseball. You could disagree with it without going after me personally. I put DA on ignore a year ago and every time I unignore one of his posts (about once every 10 or so he posts) I regret it. Sorry to talk s*** about him but he is what he is and that's a White Sox sycophant.
  5. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:26 PM) Well no lol. Avi has had plenty of chances, Navarez has not I'm just saying if you're really committing to a rebuild then it makes sense to apply that same logic to guys like Avi. Same with Saladino, same with Sanchez. Yes Avi has failed but unless they have someone he's blocking (and they don't) then you just trot him out there and hope for the best. If they were contending (like last Winter's moves indicated) then it would be stupid (like it was last year with Avi) but they aren't, things change. There's no downside to letting Avi trot out there for 300 more PA if he's not blocking anybody.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:21 PM) I think long term you try to develop Collins. Flowers came a long way defensively in the Sox system. Until they are trying to compete, I don't think it is imperative they find a long term guy. When they are ready to win, it should mean they can carry an offensively challenged guy back there, so you find a veteran pitch framer who calls a good game. Catchers are hard to find, hard to develop, have a bust rate, but some come out of nowhere. I would hate the Sox not get big time value somewhere else and get smoked takimg on a mediocre catcher. As you said yourself, the chances Collins pans out are very slim. Maybe 1/10 as a catcher. It would behoove them to find someone in one of these trades that is much closer to MLB level or already at MLB level. Won't be cheap, for all the reasons you listed, but if they are rebuilding getting a solid catcher should be a high priority.
  7. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:15 PM) If we are doing this rebuilding thing I want Navarez to get most of the reps at Catcher to see if we might have something with him Well, if we are going by that logic then they are probably going to run Avi out there again as well. I don't have a problem with it in what is FINALLY a rebuilding year. If they suck they suck and actually might help bring success by improving the draft pick. If they improve, f***ing great.
  8. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:09 PM) I had my eyes on Severino as a secondary piece in a WAS deal. He's no Pudge (either one of them), but has a good shot at being a solid regular for a long time That would be ideal. Sox really need to find their starting catcher in one of these deals.
  9. QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:11 PM) That's funny. 2 days ago the Red Sox fans of the internet were saying that Moncada wasn't worthy of getting Sale. Now the trade happens and they win it. That being said, I am disappointed we missed out on another piece or 2 just so Boston would pick up all the money owed to Moncada. They didn't send a long any cash. The signing bonus was just structured so they made three separate payments. He's still owed 11 million on that bonus from the Red Sox and they will pay it. The other 32 million they paid for him was luxury tax. In essence they traded Moncada and the the other prospects for Chris Sale at 3 years 100 million.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 08:18 PM) The other thing that needs to be brought up in every Eaton thread is that he's a guy we heard the word "attitude" used about even before we traded for him, and he just might not be that good of a guy to have around on a team that is clearly looking 3 years down the road and just traded a guy he's probably friends with. Good point although I think the attitude stuff with Eaton is over blown. He just seems like a guy that usually goes whatever way the wind is blowing. Now that RV is gone maybe the manager will actually take on more of role in determining which way that wind is blowing, rather than just letting the inmates run the asylum.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:36 PM) You need a good return for Abreu. He can be non tendered if he flops or gets hurt. His AAV is a steal. He is vastly undervalued around here. True, but the flip side is that if he performs, arb is going to be friendly to him. I don't think he's undervalued or over valued I think he's properly valued by most. He's a solid starter on a decent contract the return should probably be a B+ prospect and a lotto ticket.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:31 PM) Sox need hitters. Abreu is their best hitter. Why trade him? But, the Rockettes will absolutely salivate at the thought of Abreu. First Base is their biggest weakness (along with bullpen). They might overpay. They think they can win in 2017. Rodgers and Dahl are studs. Gotta get one of them. Murphy is very good catching prospect, better than anything Sox have had in years. Plus, Rox have another outstanding catching prospect, so one of them is expendable. Hoffman has been a disappointment. Maybe it's Coors Field syndrome. Tapia is overrated by you guys. McMahon is, too. Stay away. Rox have a couple of lower level position prospects who are Very interesting. Because he's turning 30 (at best) this winter, has declined two years in a row, and probably won't be a part of the next Sox playoff team. He doesn't have a lot of value but he likely has more now than next offseason or at the deadline after another slow 1st half.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 08:26 PM) I can't see Frazier being a fit for the Rockies at all. You're overspending on a guy who can play 3b in order to move him to 1b and then let him walk as a free agent? I can come up with probably 10 teams Frazier is a better fit for. The point of Abreu is that he's on your team for 3/$45 ish and you can even cut that to 2/$28 ish if he gets hurt so his contract is nice and insured. That makes a ton more sense for the Rockies, as with several other teams. I've felt for a while that he's a perfect fit for Cleveland. Lots of talent in their org, opening at 1b, would prefer the cost controlled guy compared to the big splash, no draft pick to give up as with EE. But you'd have to trade in the division. Which would actually help the Sox in their quest for a high draft pick. Nothing wrong with it in this case imo.
  14. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:14 PM) Of the remaining free agent catchers Jeff Mathis is the only one who's an above-average framer. And he hits like he's holding a whiffle bat. SOB. Going to have to get creative.
  15. I've done a 180 on pitch framing. I over estimated (a bad mistake) the competency of MLB umps. I've now seen more than enough evidence that framing matters and that the Sox suffered from a lack of it last year. This is a key area to improve on and seeing how we are starting from the bottom it shouldn't be too hard just to move into "mediocre". I have no idea who is out there that fits the rebuild plan but just getting someone that can raise the trade value of the pitchers by getting more strikes is a good move.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 08:08 PM) Last big contract, "only" made 85mil in his career...I'd bet he goes for the cash. He will, no doubt. Especially as going to a contender in baseball is a crap shoot given the nature of the playoff structure.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:39 PM) See post 98. Then put it into the Moncada ones. Heaven forbid having the first really young position player since Beckham (Anderson was unfairly lost in the shuffle last year, with the season falling apart) that White Sox fans could get that excited about. So that's two Moncada jerseys sold already, just in this thread alone. Take it somewhere else man. Not today. There's too much real stuff to talk about.
  18. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:34 PM) Eating that much money would've likely been a problem for a number of teams, but the Red Sox definitely can afford it. Well it's money already spent and budgeted. They just took on Sale's salary minus Moncada's and functionally it's like they just traded for Sale at 3 years 100 million (adding on what they invested in Moncada). But yea, they were certainly one of 3-4 teams that could afford Moncada's initial price tag.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:29 PM) And that he's struggling with in regards to things like footwork and arm angles. Seems like CF would be a more natural position and would allow him to focus more on his offense. In my experience in the game, just as a player and also around some college and low level pro coaches, CF is as much instinctual as it is athletic. Hell, hit him 5000 fungos before April and see if when you hit it he goes and gets them with no missteps or wasted energy (hello Adam Eaton in CF). If he does, maybe he's a natural out there but if can't really believe the Red Sox didn't already do this. If was a natural out there, he'd probably already have been moved. We'll see. As I said earlier, 3B, 2B and CF are all within 5% production wise (hitting) in MLB so whatever position he ends up at is fine, just play it at least league average. This isn't a situation where he's moving to LF or 1B.
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:27 PM) With Hahn's presser, and this tweet, it makes it seem as though Kopech was offered initially, and then perhaps the Nats offer was enough to force the Red Sox into conceding Moncada. Not sure that I believe this is the order it went in though. It certainly appears that the Sox finally managed to leverage one team's interest to get a better deal from another. It's not an overpay from the Red Sox but IMO it would have been an underpay from the Nationals if the rumor discussed last night was their best offer.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:22 PM) Dan Hayes ‏@CSNHayes 56m56 minutes ago Andrew Benintendi was never an option for #WhiteSox. Yoan Moncada was added later in process. Bregman, T. Turner never offered. If this is true, and we have no reason to doubt it, then they did well to get the deal done with Boston today. There is an opportunity cost here and they avoided it. Now they can focus on the other dominoes behind Sale and keep moving in the rebuild.
  22. Apparently the 31 million dollar signing bonus, no matter how spread out, would have always been paid by the Red Sox, so they didn't really "pitch in" another 11 million or so. That's my understanding at least after reading larry's post at SSS. I don't think you can "trade" a signing bonus if that makes any sense.
  23. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:10 PM) 1st time a #1 prospect has been traded? That guy Marte on the Braves got traded but he was widely considered at the time (and certainly in hindsight) to be one of the weakest #1 overall prospects ever. From what I'm reading about Moncada, physically he's a once a decade talent and skill wise has more than enough to back up his #1 overall rating by some sites. He's legit. He needs to pan out. Hopefully not even the Sox player development team can screw this one up.
  24. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 06:53 PM) Per Rick, Moncada will start in AAA. Not a ready product. Really good stuff from him. Thank God. There's no reason not to extend to the 7th year of guaranteed control. Hell, even if he was "ready" (like Byrant) you hold him out the extra two months that's just how you play it from the club's long term perspective.
  25. QUOTE (SEALgep @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 06:53 PM) For those preferring CF, I wonder if the DP combo with Anderson is being discounted. Hate to say it but this isn't a video game, why would you ask this guy, who is no doubt going to be fairly unsettled for a minute, to move to a position he's never played regularly in pro baseball? It's not how you start the relationship imo.
