Cease To Padres per Passan
Drafting and scouting is obviously incredibly hard but if you're going to draft players that are gonna rely on one really loud tool you sure as s%*# better be right more often than not. Hindsight, but that's why the Colson pick was so good. He has a foundation of tools, not just the traditional ones, but also strike zone management and overall athletic profile.

White Sox sign Martin Maldonado 1 year/4 million, vesting option for 2025
I gotta give Getz some credit, he's making moves that I don't think Hahn would, especially at the lower levels.

To me the Grandal signing had almost nothing to do with Narvaez, or the catching situation in general. This is all basically fan casting but to me, as a long time Sox fan, signing Grandal was in response to the prior offseason, where they failed to sign Harper and Manny and simply needed to "make a splash" -- at any position. Grandal just happened to be the guy, position was secondary. They signed him on November 29th of that offseason. Hahn was ITCHING to bring in someone after the prior offseason's failure.

1/9/24 Update: Wander Franco to face lesser charges
He will grease the right palms in the Dominican. From what I have read young teenage girls are often used as dowry, or if not often is at least still in off putting practice in the Dominican. So not in any way excusing his actions but he will probably not face jail time imo. As for MLB or US punishment? Who knows.

I'm not sure what trading Omar has to do with signing Grandal. Omar isn't a full time catcher and is now below replacement, just like Grandal. I think the problem is more finding good players than letting JAGs like Omar go.

They probably are, but Trayce's back was "gone" too and he managed to put up a few productive half seasons. Lewis is a guy we'd hope to flip and otherwise just DFA if he stinks. He's the type of guy you sign to this deal, not Maldonado.

Fire Pedro Grifol
That article made my head hurt. Jim says in 20 words what can and should be said in 10. Grifol sucks and his bosses suck too. The end.

Next Merkin article: SNL Billie Eilish/Jake Peavy #44 Sox jersey
Yes, acquaintance of mine from college. He was living in Chicago when he was coming up as an actor and his first big gig was at Second City. Chicago is such a great town, I'm glad to see it getting some better pub with The Bear. Much more to Chicago than what the media wants to cover.

My guy Steve Yeun started at Second City I believe.

A Tale of Two Cities . . . MLB Expansion.
I think I just figured they contracted the As and would start fresh with a new brand in Vegas.

A Tale of Two Cities . . . MLB Expansion.
I don't fucking know. They already got plans? I was just doing a drive by post but cynically I'd expect Vegas, it's where all the leagues want to be I guess.

A Tale of Two Cities . . . MLB Expansion.
Vegas. Can almost guarantee Vegas will be one. As for the other I think it will be somewhere in the south east. Either Charlotte or Nashville.

JR catches a lot of heat for making bad hires, you're almost there Tony. JFC, I defended this dude more than most but FFS why the hell is he even involved AT ALL in the franchise right now?

And that we never got? Those days sucked too, to be real.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Yea, give me position players as well. Pitching everything else being equal, is just more prone to injury risk and sudden changes in true talent. Try and build a decent core around Colson and whoever comes back in the Cease trade and figure out the pitching once that is hopefully accomplished.

New York Mets sign Trayce Thompson to a minor league deal
Always glad to see Trayce's name pop up as a signing. He will have a chance to break camp with the big club. He's a good guy and in another universe with a healthier body maybe turns into an everyday regular or even all star player.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Is this that guy's first offseason? These things tend to go slowly and then all at once. Someone has to "set" the market usually and then there's a flurry of deals. Other times it doesn't go like this and a potential deal just simmers and simmers and simmers before getting done once the pressure of getting the roster set by late February arrives in late winter. The offseason has just started. Nobody wants to rush a deal just for the sake of getting something done.

Jung Hoo Lee
Oh analytics wise I think it's a stupid move. But the Giants could throw 115 million down a drain in the Tenderloin district and be no worse for wear. The league is printing money, and in this fiscal environment is by far the safest vehicle to protect and build generational wealth. My point was more that bad contracts come in all shapes and sizes, and with the Sox, a lot of "less risky" deals (because they are shorter years or dollars) are just as "risky" (again, it's all relative, nobody is going bankrupt here) and moreso even as you're wasting more roster spots.
