5-15 GT - Sox @ PIT - 6:05pm CST
Lopez sitting at 92. I'm really starting to get discouraged with the young pitching at the MLB level.

2018 White Sox catch-all thread
That seems the best bet. Otherwise they could move Dee to 2B and try out Gamel or Haniger in CF but that seems pretty extreme. That would also force Cruz onto the field some nights. Sucks for the Mariners they were finally generating some real excitement here, and now this. Difference between Cano and Gordo the rest of the way is probably about 3 wins. That's three wins they couldn't afford to give up.

2018 White Sox catch-all thread
According to Servais he's going to get the majority of starts at 2B. Cano is now out for at least 80 games so he'll have plenty of opportunity. He was 0-4 last night. Stop me if you've heard that before. This is probably it for him as a MLB player. If he can't at least hit something like 250/300/350 they will probably just DFA him when Robinson is back. They might DFA him before that if someone better comes around. Now that he's on the 25 and 40 man the pressure is on. Paychecks are much better though.

Eloy Jimenez
I'm too lazy to link right now (just google or twitter search Eloy Jimenez) but a couple newish scouting reports from national guys came in on Eloy and why they are incredibly glowing when analyzing him as a hitter, bu they are pretty cynical on his future defensive value, if any. His arm is average (could possibly be plus with some work on footwork) but his range and instincts are rated below average for RF and he'll be a candidate to move to LF/DH early. He's gotten some more starts in LF lately so that might be the Sox' thinking as well. But I mean nobody really gives a fuck what Man Ram is doing in LF when he's doing Man Ram things at the plate. That will obviously be the hope with eloy, and I do think that one or two Manny like 300/400/600 seasons could be in store for his prime.

It's time to talk about the Sox young pitching
You'll like this eminor. This guy ran a pretty large sample using common DIPS stats to predict future RA/9 and FIP came out the best over a larger sample, over SIERRA, K/BB rate and xFIP, among others. But it still wasn't very good, so he changed some of the inputs (and this, again, as you linked, goes back to linear weights and Tom Tango) to make what he called "pFIP", which was more predictive over the sample he ran using historical data. I googled and didn't really find much work on continuing development of pFIP, although there does seem to be some similar efforts underway. I'm sure the clubs have long had stuff like this, at least the smarter ones. Anyways, it's a really small sample for Lopez. Gio I'm not even touching. The eye test on him is puke, you don't need no saber stats. Lopez is more nuanced in his "struggles".

Buehrle is one of the only guys ever that didn't regress to his dip stats. A real outlier. Although there is some research being done that suggests some pitchers can outpitch their peripherals they are also outliers like buerhle.

bWAR sucks for pitchers because it doesn't use FIP. Lopez has been incredibly lucky. He has .4fWAR and the 2nd worst xFIP in baseball behind (you guess it) Giolito. I'm a big Reylo supporter. He's got great stuff. But he's been all over the place this year and especially his changeup has just been awful. There is some really great clay to work with their though, unlike what I've seen from Gio, who honestly looks like a Juco pitcher.

Gordon Beckham is getting called up for the Mariners today and will probably be the starter at 2B while Cano is out. They might move Dee back to 2B but the beat writer Shannon Dreyer, who is usually reliable, thinks they will let Beckham get some starts there, at least for now.

Lopez and Giolito, and Giolito with a bullet, have been the worst starters in baseball this year. Giolito doesn't even look like a pro player imo. Lopez at least has the velocity and stuff but so far his command on his changeup has been absolutely awful, and so has his control in general. Lopez's problems can be fixed with repetition and refinement. I have no idea how you "fix" Giolito.

Sox vs Cubs 1:20 NBCSN
Remember when folks were up in arms about the Sox calling up Eloy or Kopech to give the fans a feel good moment this weekend? I think the Sox are in it for the long haul somehow...

Adam Eaton Undergoes Ankle Surgery
Yea no kidding. I kinda feel for Eaton even though I think he's kinda a jagoff. Based on what ptatc wrote it seems probable that he played on a lot of sprained ankles over the years. As a guy that short and driven he probably had a chip on his shoulder his entire career and played through countless small injuries when he perhaps shouldn't have. But, he's set for life and the Sox made a helluva trade on paper so far. I think if Gio and Eaton both end being nothing burgers for their new clubs Lopez and Dunning will give the Sox about 15-25 WAR over the next 5-7 seasons.
