QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) I like that he says even most of the crap he came up with is BS. Everything is. There is no formula. As much as people want to laugh and rip at Hawk for his anti-SABER stuff and his will to win, they should also laugh at Brian Kenney who works for MLB Network and still can't tell you if a player is any good even if he has seen him play 1000 times without consulting Fangraphs. As is the case when there are 2 sides to a story, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. Interesting how I was reading James talking about BS and hearing statements by Hawk.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 08:00 AM) I've never handled firearms, but wouldn't you clean it empty? QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) Jose ain't the sharpest knife in . . . the place where they keep the knives. You guys need to pay attention to the news more. That kinda stuff happens all the time in this country.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 04:33 AM) Haha f*** it man I'm in. But Danks has to go then. Who's gonna have the better year next year, Danks or Buehrle? Let's just be honest. Mark.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 10:34 PM) Based on the fact he picked up a $15,000 bar tab for all the Kansas City fans at a local bar/pub after winning the Wild Card game. Jake Peavy says the Cubs and Jon Lester are picking up their tab in KC tonight.

We got another clip tonight during Agents of Shield, they gave us the "lifting the hammer" scene that was shown at comic-con. Probably on the youtubes but with this one go find it yourself

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 08:47 PM) I can't believe he was talking about the Cubs like he was the day before pitching the biggest game of his career. You say that as though we have no experience with Jake Peavy. All. Talk.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 06:31 PM) Interesting, though it would require trading Quintana and Danks and isn't likely... "Jake Peavy told reporters, including Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago-Sun Times, that he will be interested to see where his close friend Jon Lester signs this offseason. Peavy had no qualms in stating that he’d like to once again be teammates with his friend: “I’ve certainly talked to Jon Lester because we’re buddies,” said Peavy. “So I have a feel for what he does. And I certainly know that Chicago would interest him and interest me.” Peavy clarified that he’s not suggesting a package deal for the Cubs, but rather, “There’s a package deal out there for any team.” Wittenmyer spoke to a few people close to Peavy who believe the Cubs would be high on his offseason wishlist, however, having spent several years there with the White Sox." As usual, Jake Peavy, solidly focused on doing whatever he can to help his team win. (Just shut up and f***ing pitch)

No people on board, heavy damage to the launch pad, nearby facility evacuated, infrared weather satellites and doppler radar caught the explosion, rocket was carrying supplies and science experiments to the ISS, there are other supply options but the science experiments will be a significant cost loss.

Anyone want to see a rocket bound for the ISS stop and explode?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) I was curious about this, and it turns out it isn't really the case. 2010 Rookie ball he rocked right out of the gate 2011 skipped to A+, was good in April, very good in May, down in June, Big up in July, down somewhat in August. So he was just plain streaky. 2012 in AA it was sort of true - he was bad in April, better in May, very good in June then back down for the rest of the year 2013 he was decent in April and strong in AA by May and held it, and actually did quite well his first few weeks in AAA before falling apart slowly as the summer went on 2014 in AAA it was certainly true - he got better each month through a monster July, then came back down in August and really suffered in MLB I'd say if there is a pattern there, it is that he falls off late in the season generally. He may have been just plain tired in September. The very slow starter thing hasn't really been there, until 2014. Well, i'm gonna stop saying that then.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) I agree -- Wilkins looked nothing short of hopeless in his cup of coffee. Hopefully it was just nerves or something. He's been a very slow starter at every level he's stopped at. No one should have been surprised by that whether he's a usable player or not.

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) Matt Yallof @MattYallofMLB 28m28 minutes ago According to #giants source Peavy has thumb bruise. No torn skin on right thumb. Too f***ing busy trying to hitchhike to Chicago... -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) I went off of this from http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensa...cago-white-sox/ https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tK7...amp;output=html $46 million on the books plus a couple million in arb to retain Flowers, Jones, and Noesi, followed by an extra $8 million ish to fill out the roster is where I get to $60 mil. Add in Viciedo for another $5 million and that would bring to about $65 in total payroll if Viciedo is offered arbitration. (You get $500k back for every guy you sign because that takes a roster spot away from a minimum salary player, but the $8 million to fill out the roster has to be counted because it'll count at the end). To do a go for broke, all in season might leave them >$50 million-ish to spend, by my estimate
-
Um...anyone who's trying to add up their payroll commitments from the B-R page, for some reason the name "Jose Dariel Abreu" has, um, disappeared. I got to $60 million in direct commitments earlier this year without Viciedo and $65 million with Viciedo. That also doesn't include however Jose Abreu's signing bonus is booked, and that doesn't include continuing elevated spending on the draft and international FA due to higher draft slotting. I continue to think that number is accurate.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 12:37 PM) apparently Peavy let it be known yesterday that him and his bro Lester are pretty interested in Chicago. I only put this here because he let it slip during his interview Classic Jake Peavy, always calm and focused on the game to be pitched, does such a great job of avoiding silly distractions.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) Too bad Vicideo can't hit Yeah I'm just going to do this edit and be sad.

Some infectious disease experts wrote this piece yesterday on something we actually should be starting to panic about. If the spread of ebola in west africa isn't contained soon, there is potential that it could start jumping to other urban areas in the developing world where there aren't health systems capable of coping with it, creating a situation where it takes a place as a disease that the world just has to deal with. In that case, it would probably be regularly coming to the U.S. and Europe, but not from a limited group of countries, instead coming from everywhere, pretty much all the time. It would become a highly fatal disease at pandemic level that just wouldn't go away or burn out until there was a widely distributed and effective vaccine. In that case, "quarantining everyone from West Africa" wouldn't be a useful technique at all, and it just might need a couple people to travel from West Africa to an area like India to make it really happen. The way around that is to stop it in west africa and prevent its spread to other places.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) So what’s the total number of people that have actually contracted it in this country (not brought it in from another country). Like 5? 2.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) I know 15M is a nice chunck of money but its not a large option of the potentential 40-50M the Sox have to spend. Scherzer and Shields will be much more costly in terms of annual salary and contract years. BMac could very well likely cost in that 15M range annually on a 3-4 year deal and brings health concerns with his contract. Masterson is a reclamation project. If the Sox really plan on contending, Buehrle could help the rotation and bridge the gap to Rodon. One of the things I like most about the Buehrle idea is that its only for one year and then Buehrle's salary is off the books. If a pitcher becomes injured or Danks gets traded then Rodon gets called up. I wouldn't put it past GMs, but I'd be stunned if McCarthy got a $45-$60 million deal.
-
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 11:09 AM) Let say Toronto throws is 4M and knocks Buehrle's 2015 salary down to 15M which I believe he is worth. What can Toronto expect in return from the Sox? I'd give up very little for that. That would fill a rotation spot for 1 year at a high price that would eat up a large portion of the White Sox's money to spend on free agents this year while still leaving them major holes at DH, OF, and bullpen. If you're looking to fill a rotation slot there's a good chance you could get comparable performance on the free agent market for similar money without having to give up any minor leaguers for him. Throw them something comparable to one of the relievers we got back in the deals we made this year.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 07:48 PM) I am pretty sure I remember us never even offering him a contract. You're right, there was never an official offer, both sides probably roughly knew where the white sox sat though.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) I didn't think the Sox actually offered him a contract. They weren't prepared to go to that number of years, etc. They told him to stay close and let the club know but had probably also said this is as much as we can budget given our current rebuilding plans, blah blah blah and we respect you and everything else. I remember hearing a lot of talk int he 3/$36 range from us, so when he got a deal worth 2x that total amount they said he should take it if he wanted the money. Worth noting that if he hadn't left Chicago, he'd have had full no trade protection due to being a 10/5 player, so just by bringing the other offer back it was clear he was leaving for that money.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) To be fair, his claim is that ownership lied to him about not trading him. Got that, still say that Mark should have known exactly what the end result would be.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) The White Sox did this with Maggs. He was underpriced until 2004, then they tried to trade him for Nomar once he was getting paid what he should have been. It started the bad blood, but it is a pretty good strategy assuming a team is willing to pick up the contract. It can easily blow up in your face. Yeah but big difference there, Ordonez was on his rookie contract so he had no real control of where he was going anyway. The White Sox could have traded him to the worst team in baseball and there's nothing he could have done about it, that's the "its a business" part.
