QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) WAR has its flaws and should be used as only part of evaluating a player. At some point common sense needs to be put into the equation. WAR puts way too much stock in flawed defensive metrics. If you trust WAR that much than that means both Zobrist and Alex Gordon were more valuable than Abreu last year. And I'm just not accepting any kind of argument that says this. Well their teams were a helluva lot better.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 01:02 PM) Personally, I love the KC model because it's essentially about doing all the little things well and limiting mistakes in all aspects of the game, it's smart baseball at its finest. Well, i guess we're out.

I have no idea if anyone else here cares about this but why not write it. Just watched the 30 for 30 on the 1989 Loma Prieta (world series) earthquake. Caught a bit of delightful science in the actual video of the quake hitting. When an earthquake happens, it sends out seismic energy in the form of different shaking methods. The fastest-moving wave that heads out is called a p-wave, its always weaker than the waves that come afterwards that do the real damage. The p wave is usually somewhere between a second and a couple seconds faster than the big surface waves, and the farther you are from the source of the quake, the bigger the time gap. In the video from when the quake hits, Tim McCarver is talking about something that happened in the previous game. If you listen carefully, McCarver stumbles over his words and pauses mid-sentence, then resumes talking normally for about 2 seconds, and then the tv camera cuts out. Tim McCarver paused his sentence when the p-wave hit, kept talking for 2 seconds not having a chance to process what it was, and then the main shaking hit. I can literally tell how far Candlestick Park was from the source of the quake by Tim McCarver's speaking. I just thought that was remarkable.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 12:43 PM) Let's not be THOSE fans who overrate our prospects so heavily. Montas is the ONLY guy who MAY wind up in the BACK of a top 100 list. Beck and Sanchez are dime a dozen prospects. Montas took big strides, but he is still 1 more great season away from being a consensus top 100 guy. That's all fine...but even given that, we aren't in position to be trading those things for guys in their 30s who are a year away from free agency. Those guys would serve us better as bench players or bullpen pitchers or as throwins in a deal for someone who does fit us than they would in a deal for a guy at that point in his career.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) But unless he is traded for a corner OF, Hahn may be forced to keep him. I don't think there is a legit corner OF on the 40 man or at AAA that is a better option. So until the Sox add that person, they will hold on to Viciedo. It probably makes most sense to pencil him in as a DH while they look for a corner and a DH hopefully both LH. Once both are found, then Viciedo is expendable as long as you can find someone who will take him. If we don't find a corner OF somewhere this offseason then there's no point in adding a cent to payroll outside of maybe a couple bullpen guys. Right now, corner outfield is a gaping hole on this roster and going with what we currently have on this squad is an admission that we're not competing next year. If we don't add a corner OF, we may as well play Andy Wilkins at DH and Bassitt in the rotation next year out of the spring. It's that big of a hole. Failing to add a corner OF this offseason would be like resigning Konerko was last year, a complete signal that we don't care about the next season. If we can't trade him by December 2, its really tough to figure out a reason to keep him. Maybe you do if you've got teams interested in trades and you're just waiting to make a decision, maybe if there's something behind the scenes going on that we don't know about (Abreu says he'll retire if Viciedo is traded or something like that), but otherwise, if he's not traded by Dec. 2, I would cut him lose.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) Why? Are they unable to trade him for a period of time if they tender him a contract? No, I just think that if they offer him arbitration they'll put themselves in a position where they're going to be stuck with him.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 18, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) I think that the sox really have no choice but to tender him. I think they have to deal him before December 2.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread

Yeah, terrible contract. Except for that super bowl. -
With the expectation of a big cap increase next year, it seems like the right move if he's up for it.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:10 PM) I agree but I would say, the sox should not address needs b/c they might have a superstar. however the needs of the system right now is many and not just 1 position or player will fill it. anyway, there is no real first base player being forecasted in the first rnd. I agree, there are many needs, that's why in the rest of the draft you target BPA. You might let the ability of a guy to make the big leagues quickly enter your mind in the first round, but that might also get you to pass over a younger guy with boatloads of talent.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:42 PM) the usual first baseman is a player with power. so with Jose A playing 1b, the other player can go to dh. in addition, I am talking about 4-5 yrs from now. ref prospect and the draft, at this point no one is right and no one is wrong. it is based on opinions. Daz should be selected before he gets to #8 Ashe should be moving up in the list, interesting stuff Fulmer, a RP - CL who would pick a closer at #8? the sox still has holes to address. Buelher I just think his bread and butter in going to be in the pen overall I love discussing prospect and draft. good job. By rule, maybe outside of a pick high in the first round, you never draft for "need". You can favor a few positions if you think your system is weak in them, but you never, ever draft in rounds 2+ on what your major league team needs. What will happen is that some guys from those lower rounds will surprise, some guys will disappoint, and you do the best you can to find the surprises. Any of those guys are going to be so far away from the big leagues that it's literally impossible to predict how they'll go. I would not draft a 1b-only in round 1 right now, not with Abreu on the roster, unless everyone was screaming he's head and shoulders better than the remaining draft picks. But outside of that, pick the best mix of players you can get under your signing cap. Who knows what you'll hit in the next 4 years? I promise you the White Sox will draft more than 1 1b in that time, just not at the top of the draft.

QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:21 PM) However you assemble it, this postseason has shown us the value of a high-quality bullpen. It's not just KC. Baltimore has a better bullpen than it does starting pitching. The same might be true of the Giants. There is no question in my mind that the Sox bullpen was the #1 reason we finished next to last. With KC's or even the Orioles bullpen (and a manager who knew how to deploy it), we could have contended for a wild card slot. Just a note...KC's bullpen actually on the whole season was not better than Baltimore's. KCs park played a little more hitter friendly and so they wound up with a slightly worse ERA, but Baltimore's pen pitched 10% more innings, walked fewer people, gave up a slightly lower OPS (again add in a park adjustment). Seattle and Oakland are right there too, with better numbers than both but again park adjustments factored in. it's a piece but not the only one.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:21 PM) To be fair, it took until almost the very end of the signing period to sign Rodon and it took us going right up against the signing penalties to get this done. It sure didn't help my view of them at all. An educated guess from the way they gave "no comments" or whatever it was when Rodon didn't get called up is that the long negotiation played into it in ways that the team was not happy about.

QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) Don't be so blinded by trying to maximize Montas' value. The White Sox have at least some starting pitchers. The White Sox have nobody, literally nobody, who can be relied on out of the pen. They're not paying for someone either, we know that much. Montas might have more value as a starter for the other 29 teams in baseball, but the Sox have the glaringest of needs in the bullpen. Plus pitching out of the pen should substantially reduce his injury risk. I would be surprised if they don't pay decent money to add some stability to the bullpen this year.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) I agree that the game needs to be stepped up. I just dont like how they are going about it, it seems just way too forced. BvS seems like a movie that should come after the core Justice League movies are established, not before all but Superman. I wouldn't mind the format if the last film wasn't terrible. I really wouldn't. The problem is that the last superman film was terrible.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) Well played. But I promise you, unless a movie out of these gets really good reviews, I will NOT see them in theatres after that Man of Steel debacle. Both Flash and Arrow are quality shows, why recast them? Dumb. If the next one, BVS, is on the same quality level as the last film, that will pretty much end all hope from my side.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) With as many new players we have (and you might as well count Rose as new), including a couple rookies who we expect to log minutes in our rotation, we should expect some up and downs, especially early in the season. We'll just have to remember that and relax and as the team has time and gels, we should see ourselves emerge. The last time the Bulls had "Many new players" they wound up with the best record in the league.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) And since it could be spread by oil, we should cut off those supplies as well. The rest of the country can do without your supplies at this point. No longer kidding.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) Why do I keep seeing Volquez' name brought up? That guy is a dud. Is it a Coop'll Fix Em mindset? He had his best season in years this year, he's a righty, he has been inconsistent enough that he's not going to get a long term commitment from most teams, IMO the Pirates probably won't keep him, he won't get a qualifying offer so he won't cost a draft pick, his main issue has been control and so slight improvements on that could push him into the realm of a really good starter for several years. You're right there's some "Coop'll fix em" built into that last part, but he's also shown this year that the right pitching coach can help him get into a really good groove. Not my preferred option but I get it.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 12:06 AM) jeeze, I still must be the only one who is saying the sox will be in the playoff next yr. remember I been saying this 3/4 thru the season. if they, the sox fails, I will be eating a lot of crap. I think you're right and if chips fall correctly they have a shot at the playoffs next year...but I also think that bringing Rodon straight up with 0 time at AAA to work on anything or get used to a "higher than college" level of competition hurts that goal rather than helps it.

FutureSox: The 2015 Infield Traffic Jam

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 08:33 AM) a trade is an option but I really can see 1 being moved to the outfield. esp if DV is still with the team. Here's the problem with what you just said. First of all, the team has repeatedly said that Micah seems best fit for 2b. He doesn't have a strong arm and IIRC he's already had some arm issues, so you can't expect him to handle a corner OF spot or even move across the infield. Carlos is likely to be the weakest hitter of the 3, which generally seems like a poor fit for the OF. Marcus seems like the best candidate to spend some time at a corner OF spot. His bat could play there, he's fast enough to cover ground, and they've moved him around to positions including the OF anyway. It would be nicer if his bat could play in the infield and we found a bigger bat in the OF because we'd get more offense out of it, but maybe that's ok if he's cheap and we want to spend money on the bullpen. But the problem with Marcus and Viciedo being on the team is, they're both righties. There's no obvious way for them to split time unless you're putting one at DH. Viciedo would seem like a poor backup OF since he's so streaky and he's never going to be a defensive replacement for someone, and if you put Viciedo at DH and Semien in the OF, then we have 2-3 weak hitting lefties in the lineup, which is a setup the manager does not want. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 16, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) How old will that 2010/12/14 stuff about the Giants get the next two years if they win it all again? Worked for the Spurs.
