Another way to look at it...Robin rarely uses backups. In AAA they can find playing time for 4 guys at 3 positions if each guy takes an offday every couple days. In the big leagues that just is not happening.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 21, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) Guys, are we really to the point thinking we can get anything for Adam Dunn? I guess a couple of fringe prospects 'might' be reasonable but I still can't imagine any team wanting Dunn to do anything except pinch hit. His track record in the AL has been that bad. Maybe the NL. His track record is no worse than your recent gambling record yet you continue to offer predictions.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 21, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Paul George has been diagnosed with a concussion and will begin the NBA-mandated protocol before he can return to the court. He admitted he blacked out in the fourth quarter after Dwyane Wade kneed him in the back of the head. And I thought the long break would help the heat out most.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 21, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) Those are not all of the statistics on the back of the card. So you're missing at bats, doubles, triples, and games played?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 21, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) Defense. You know, that part of the game not hitting for position players? Or do you think that defense doesn't actually exist, or is simply hot air? Rafael Palmeiro's 1999 season was one of the greatest defensive seasons in history by a 1b according to my baseball card.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 21, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) Like I said, it's largely a gimmick. Who has benefitted most from Sabremetrics? Those who sell products based around bootleg stats. I'd say the Boston Red Sox have benefited the most.

Which Sox are going to be traded this summer?

Does anyone want to do the "what contending teams could seriously use an upgrade at short" exercise? -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2014 -> 10:03 AM) The Sox aren't getting a good prospect for Adam Dunn. As Sheldon says, anyone who thinks so must have taken a marijuana. Do what the White Sox did with the other 3 guys in the Peavy deal. Try to get a guy or two in the low/mid levels of A-ball with 1-2 projectable skills and see what happens.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 21, 2014 -> 09:43 AM) The worst case scenario would be Dunn accepting the QO and the Sox paying him $14 million on a 1 year deal. Is it worth the risk of trying to acquire the draft pick for him in a year when the team won't be spending a ton of money? I'd consider doing it but I definitely understand those against it. I think the White Sox could find far better uses for $14 million and if someone else is willing to risk >$10 million on Adam Dunn next year I'd say let them. He'd have to be either crazy or really, really sick of this organization to turn that down. If he did turn it down, unless he really catches fire the next 3 months I'd say it'd be >90% certain he'd be sitting out until the draft pick compensation expires like several people have been doing this year.

QUOTE (Dunt @ May 21, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) I know a lot of people are hoping to move him midseason and understandably so, but is there a chance the Sox could extend him a qualifying offer after the season? Im not sure how qualifying offers quite work, but there is a lack of solid left handed bats in free agency this year and we could still land a pick if he turns it down. If the White Sox offer him a qualifying offer next season they are committing to pay him a 1 year, ~$14 million contract if he accepts. After the last 4 years, I find it extremely difficult that the White Sox would be interested in offering him that kind of money regardless of what he does the next few months.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 21, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) Don't the Kings just have to finish outside of the top 12? What are the ramifications for that pick? It's top-10 protected after this year for several years. The Kings lose it to us if they get the 11th or later pick the next couple seasons.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 21, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Yeah there's definitely talent in that arm. I see no reason why he shouldn't be in the rotation the rest of year. Hopefully he can prove to be an effective 4/5 starter for years to come. I really think he's got some long-term promise. That big curveball is a nice weapon but with time he's got the setup to learn how to control it better and change speeds on it and that could help him turn into a really solid, middle-of-the-order pitcher.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 20, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) First Crain last year (which really hurt), then Lindstrom. Our off-season idea of flipping relievers for valuable pieces is falling apart a bit. Cleto has negligible value, and Boggs is history. Putnam and Belisario are the veterans performing well right now, but how much would either of them fetch in July? Unless someone makes an outstanding offer for Belisario, Hahn will probably hold onto him and give Webb/Petricka some more time to get their feet wet at the big league level. So, you're saying that the White Sox picked up 4 scrap heap relievers in the offseason and at least 2 of them are pitching well enough that we'd consider keeping them for the next season and we have control of both of them? And this is "falling apart a bit"?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 21, 2014 -> 08:01 AM) OK, I get the Beckham hate, but Gillaspie has an 845 OPS. I don't know what more anybody could possibly expect from him. I don't read that comment as having to do with Gillaspie being undeserving as much as it does the fact that Marcus Semien has 13 PA's in the last 13 days. -
So Sacramento is picking 8th? drat. Not a real obvious chance that'll knock them out of the lottery next year.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 20, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) Link? I just want to know if this part of your agenda is backed by facts? His K/PA for the week before he went on the DL was at 44%. His K/BB for that week is infinite (12 k's, 1 HBP, 0 BB). Similarly, when he had that 1/29 stretch earlier this season (which some have said may have also been related to his foot) his K rate was 37.9%. Overall on the season his K-rate is 27.5%. However, if you exclude those 2 possibly injury-driven sections of the season and pretend our team wasn't a triage ward, his K-Rate in his remaining at bats is only 20.3%.
-
QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 20, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Yeah that lineup is mostly organizational depth now. I'm a fan of Ravelo, he just turned 22 and has an advanced hit tool, but we'll see if he has a place defensively in Chicago. Trayce Thompson looks to be nothing more than a 4th outfielder at this point. EDIT: I forgot Kevan Smith, he's old for the level, but he's a good athlete and has hit well at every level. He's got a shot at making it. Kevan Smith appeared notably raw behind the plate in person. No passed balls/wp's but really weak in the running game.
-
His K-Rate is also being pushed up by the time he was playing hurt.

Anyone here an Apple Macbook user? About to buy one in the near future and mainly interested in how much money to push into the processor. Don't run games or play many movies/videos/stuff like that, just lots of internet windows and typically Office applications open at the same time, along with occasionally science-related programs that process data in the background. Options I see are 2.4 GHz, 2.9 GHz, and 2.9 GHz with a turbo boost with a gradually increasing price on each. Without advice I'd probably just plop self down in the middle but anyone have any tips or good links discussing the topic?

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ May 19, 2014 -> 10:09 PM) Maybe I am being too sensitive here, but isn't there a concern within the organization of trading away Alexei at this point given the fact that he's a fellow Cuban to our star player now? Not sure if that would affect things at all and if that should even be a concern. Obviously from a business perspective it makes sense to deal Alexei if we can fill a few holes going forward. And yes, I agree there is no way we see Semien as a SS now. The problem is I am not sure if we even have someone remotely ready to take over. I wouldn't be stoked if our starting SS next year was Leury Garcia. That's not progress IMO. Yes, there's a very solid chance it is a concern and the organization will likely take it into account with regards to whether or not they choose to move him. It may cause them to not move him in the face of an otherwise solid offer, and frankly, "making sure Viciedo and Abreu are happy" may well be a more important goal than making that trade. But, that's one that only the people who are in that clubhouse have a good idea about. -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 19, 2014 -> 08:41 PM) I think Quintana being moved might be a possibility given the long-term pitching issues we have. I agree. In fact, we might even try moving Quintana to pitcher too. His arm is just too good to be wasted anywhere else. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 19, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) They'd be under the cap if they amnesty Boozer, so they can technically make that trade right? Then they can use Gasol as the main piece to get Love. Not exactly how it works. They would need to be under the cap by nearly the full amount of Gasol's contract in order to trade for him without sending matching salary back, teams can't go significnatly over the cap line by trading a draft pick for a contract. WIth the draft holds & other stuff I think the Bulls would still not be able to absorb Gasol even if they remove Boozer.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ May 19, 2014 -> 05:26 PM) Would you consider Marc Gasol + a draft pick an offer the Bulls can't refuse? I don't think the Bulls can get far enough under the cap to do that even if they amnesthetize Boozer, they'd have to be able to fit Gasol's full $15 million next year (plus any draft pick hold) under the cap to make that work. However, they could make it work by Trading Boozer + Thibs for that package I believe.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 19, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Bill James is a cult icon, though. And he's a bigger guy, not a hunk to the women like Redford. But James is very interesting guy. For instance he used to preach (don't know if he still does) that you don't need to 'protect' sluggers in the lineup. He said it matter not if the guy hitting behind you sucks. That it still doesn't affect the pitches you get and how you perform. Not sure if he's changed his position on that. We actually had that discussion here this offseason and it seems like that is still the current thinking.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 19, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) Belisario is someone that most likely would be dealt if this season slips away as well. Don't we have a couple years of control on him?
