  1. QUOTE (raBBit @ May 19, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) I would love to see how is velocity would respond if this scenario were to be played out. He definitely pitched out of the bullpen last season for the exact same reason, to keep his innings down, so it woulnd't be the first time for him. Last season they had him out of the bullpen every 5th day, so they kept him on a normal starting pitcher pattern while still using him in short relief outings.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) If you get Kevin Love, you can wait a year to get a mid-level exception, or you could package only one of this years picks, and the Bulls pick next year... or something like that. Again Mirotic probably becomes a true trade commodity because you don't really need the guy if you already have Noah and Love here. Maybe he gets put into the deal instead of a pick. The thing to note is...if the Bulls could get a player like that but it depleted their roster so much that they were waiting a year in order to get an extra draft pick and the MLE available, then you do have to make sure you can extend the guy before doing the trade. It can't be a situation like Dwight Howard to L.A. where you are going to build the roster around him long-term but you dont' have him signed long-term, because the way you just wrote it involves saying "we're a first or second round team in 2015 but we'll be deep enough to make a 2015/2016 run". That could be the right move, but getting him signed becomes paramount.
  3. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 19, 2014 -> 02:06 PM) Bad outings happen, I dont think that one outing is any type of indicator, I just feel that prospects should be handled very conservatively. He is an age appropriate level, and there is no real necessity to push him up. I am all for a jump to A+ at some point this season, though would have preferred it were in the middle of the season. But if as the previous poster said his season IS half over, the move is much more understandable. A couple others have suggested that when he gets close to his innings limit he might well actually see some time in AA pitching out of the bullpen. That'd be a plausible setup as well.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 19, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) The thing is, this isn't probably going away. They actually probably maximized his playing time doing it this way, and he did help win a couple games banged up. If they rested him a few games, every amatuer doctor would have been happy, but while it might have felt a little better and he might not have limped around as severely, maybe comes right back in a couple of games anyway. Assuming the injury is what the Sox say it is and he's out 15 days, I really don't think playing him ultimately made it worse overall. Maybe it caused him more pain, but in terms of numbers of games missed, at worst, it cost them a game or two, but might have got them 5 or 6 or more with him in the line up. It will be interesting to see how this is handled going forward. It has obviously been a problem before he was even here. He's never played more than 89 games in a year. Hopefully they figure out something that keeps it in check. Just to note, for the last week prior to going on the DL, Abreu was 4/27 (.154 average), 2 HR, 12 k's and a .570 OPS. He absolutely contributed a key HR that won a game I will grant you that, but getting him in the lineup for an additional handful of games when he could only put up those numbers isn't a big positive.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 19, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) Not a chance. I think Minnesota asks for Taj, Butler, and 2 #1 picks. And I'd make the deal. This is around the time I'd look to trade Jimmy Butler anyway. The Bulls don't have the $$ to pay him and get another star and scorers anyway. I'd very likely do this as well but with the caveat that the Bulls would have to have some idea of how to fill the SG and SF holes that they'd be creating.
  6. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ May 19, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) I think this move was done to quickly, I think they should have waited until the first half was over, let the kid pitch in the AS game and then move him up. Let him experience dominating for a while and help build that confidence. Give him the whole second half of the season in A+ in hopes he is ready to start AA next spring as a 20 year old. One other thing to remember is that he's on a 100 inning limit according to reports. At the time of this promotion he'd thrown 40 of those innings. If they waited until the AS game, which I'd assume is more than a month from now, he'd be probably at 75 innings or more and would get basically no time in A+ after a promotion. That could well have fit into why they did this now even if you could argue it's a little soon; they'd rather have him get 60 innings in A+ than something like 20 in a month.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 19, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) i hope they do it again, and Directv goes back to being its own awesome self AT&T has decided that the FCC instead needs to break into 6 independent branches to better serve their needs.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Good call. We could be talking about a Boozer, #1 pick(s), Mirotic type package to get love Um, ok?
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2014 -> 12:54 AM) Do you think there would be any difference in attendance/revenues if this team finished 78-84 or 68-94? Yes, I think there would be. One of those seasons is poor. One of those is an unmitigated, unwatchable disaster If they finished with 78 wins last year and signed Abreu I'd probably still have bought the MLB Extra Innings package this year. Instead they were a 63 win team and I decided I could pass.
  10. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ May 18, 2014 -> 06:14 PM) Holy crap, looks like Balta was right, Pacers do have another gear. Hope they can do this three more times. Wait, what? Did I say I thought they would or that I was just hoping for it?
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) Considering his velocity and quick recovery time, it makes you wonder if the new method they used on his TJ surgery will become the standard. The Braves announcers are saying he's still not comfortable with all his pitches, particularly right now he almost never wants to use his changeup because he hasn't gotten that pitch back yet.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) In "go figure" news, Gavin Floyd is throwing harder now than any season since 2010. And just got bitten for a 3 run double.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 18, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) Danks is not a good pitcher anymore, face it front office So what should they do in order to indicate that they're facing it? Release him and pay the remaining >$30 million on his contract? Trade him and pay $20 million for the priveledge to move him for nothing? Send him to the bullpen and put Carroll or someone like that who clearly is earning the job in the rotation?
  14. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 18, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) So in 20/20 hindsight it would have been better to DL him after Wednesday's game, but the reasoning behind waiting is somewhat understandable. Even if they didn't DL him after Wednesday's game, sit him out on Friday, rest him for a day or maybe even two and see if it helps. A couple days off helped during spring training. If it continues to be an issue then you can DL him retroactive to the last game he played and already have started him on a healing process, costing the team fewer games without him.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 18, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) Words cannot express how disappointing this is to me http://money.cnn.com/2014/05/18/news/compa...ectv/index.html Jesus Christ that's terrible.
  17. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 18, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Here is the inescapable conclusion from those assumptions, and it leads to only one thing -- someone getting fired. 1) They knew he'd need a DL trip 2) They knew he has an injury that only gets better with rest If those two things are both true, and they continued to play him, then guess what -- someone should get fired. I choose to believe the much simpler explanation that doesn't involve smoke and mirrors, just good old regular incompetence -- Jose talked his way into the lineup -- something that should never happen. That was what I meant. It was a terrible decision.
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 17, 2014 -> 10:47 PM) Still not seeing where I said it wouldn't happen, nor am I seeing where I would be happy about this. Hey if you say so, Balta, I guess it must be. Herm certainly doesn't have like 40 years of being one of the best in the business at keeping players healthy in his back pocket, right? But because you, Balta1701 saw it on tv and probably read a medical journal once, it makes you infallible and completely correct. Did you stay at a Holiday Inn express last night? You were driving towards a brick wall. I said it was a bad idea to continue driving into this brick wall. You described this negatively as "backseat driving". The car now is in the shop for 15 dyas.
  19. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 18, 2014 -> 01:02 PM) See my post in the Abreu thread, you have to believe in a pretty awesome acting job and conspiracy by everyone involved to believe that. Jose was seen my multiple media members visibly distraught post game. That doesn't sound like a guy that was told he'd be going on the DL far in advance. People need to put down the Schneider cool aid, it's affecting common sense badly. I think Rock is probably right that they suspected he'd need some time off to deal with this. I also think that, if they knew that, then putting him back out there every day and watching him get worse and struggle more was lunacy.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 17, 2014 -> 04:09 PM) The thing is, we don't even know what his injury is. Is it bone(spur?), tendon, muscle? We have no idea, and are just guessing. Now, Mark Parent did say that he would sit Wednesday with the day off Thursday, but obviously something changed. I wish nothing was said though because it did nothing but create second guesses. Let's also not discount the fact that Herm Schneider is one of the best in the business and he of this entire staff deserves the benefit of the doubt. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 17, 2014 -> 10:38 PM) Oh did I say that? Do tell. While we are on the making things up tour, you said that De Aza would be a great player and I am now mad at you for it So we gave Herm the benefit of the doubt and things kept getting worse. So you won't make that clear mistake again right?
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 17, 2014 -> 10:30 PM) Seems they had some clubhouse leadership issues/conflicts in Texas with Kinsler. Really dumb move by Daniels, though. He doesn't make them often. And Nelson Cruz has been really solid for the Orioles. Rios has been solid for them in Cruz's place, similar money, and they get a draft pick for Cruz leaving. That hasn't been their problem.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 17, 2014 -> 10:32 PM) You better make sure all these straw men stay away from matches, you might burn yourself We actually watched him do what you said couldn't happen today. We watched him make it worse. Congrats, you win.
  23. Every single swing Abreu took he jumped up and down like 4 times with all his weight on his right foot because his ankle hurt so much. Frankly, if he'd been pulled mid at bat it would have been the right decision.
