  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) That's a very short term outlook -- housing will recover along with the rest of it. In either case it will only get better with time...there is no switch we can flip to fix this overnight. Let's state more clearly how this is not a short term outlook. The wealth of the average African American household is comparable to what it was in 1990 right now and it's more than 5 years since the crash. 2 decades of even tiny wealth growth have been wiped out completely and 5 years later have not recovered. Furthermore, even when things were "improving", the gap was still widening.
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 28, 2014 -> 09:09 AM) I think this is irrefutable...but the entire point of these posts of yours is that we learn from the past. We have. And things ARE getting better, it just doesn't happen overnight. Economically there is a real strong case to be made that as of 2008 this is no longer true. Thanks to the combination of a housing crash and a stock market boom, the average African American family has less wealth available than a couple decades ago while the average white family has basically recovered, and that was from a place where the average white family already had a huge lead.
  3. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ May 27, 2014 -> 10:18 PM) Hopefully a breakout start for Chris Beck. 7.0 IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 6K. "Chris, we want you to work on your fastball control and durability for the first part of the season. We'll let you open things up after Memorial Day". Maybe?
  4. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 27, 2014 -> 06:22 PM) Ya definitely EJ. I thought he would have no problems being a middle of the rotation starter this year. I'm not incredibly surprised by struggles from EJ, that's what I expected from a near-rookie pitcher and why I kept calling this a rebuilding year, but the velocity loss is more than a bit surprising.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 05:19 PM) I'll never quite understand people that use those payday check cashing places. They are literally stealing money from you. Go to a bank, open up a checking account, keep 50 bucks in there and you'll never pay anyone to cash a check again. But nope, they don't do it. They can't see the forest through the trees. Same with settlement loan companies. I've had clients use that "service," being charged 50% interest rates. It's sad. Just to note, you'll pay ~$100 a year in fees to maintain a checking account at most large banks in this country if you don't have a minimum balance/direct deposit setup.
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 04:03 PM) Those are direct victims of false imprisonment (at minimum) perpetrated by the state. Private individuals weren't committing those acts on their own. The kick is up, and, what's this, the goalposts have marched themselves back 20 yards!
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2014 -> 03:41 PM) We put Japanese people into interment camps in WWII, what is appropriate there? Somebody needs to point this out.
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 03:38 PM) Not as payment for mistakes made decades/centuries ago. You want to institute a life tax? The article takes things as a progression all the way up to the recent housing crash. If your objection is that some of them were too long ago then you should strongly support additional reparations to even things out from that event.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ May 27, 2014 -> 12:54 PM) The east has been down so damn long. In football you had the long time dominance of the NFC that now switches back and forth. But in basketball the smart organizations seem to be confined to the West. There is some new blood: Philly potentially, Toronto. But for the most part it's just garbage in garbage out. Which is what happens when 3 of the best players in the East decide its too hard to compete against each other.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) Actually let's not blame women, let's blame white-man Hollywood! http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/05/27/...lywood-culture/ I think the obvious solution is to castrate all males. After all, as this shooter so clearly stated, once a male has a gun the other thing is pretty much unnecessary anyway.
  11. QUOTE (SCCWS @ May 27, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) Actually you can only get a BS if you are pitching in a save situation. But relievers who are not closers do not get as many save chances because they get pulled. Matt Thornton was the closer for parts of several seasons under Ozzie. Unfortunately he failed in those chances and was relagated back to set up each time. Once Reed arrived on the scene, Thornton stayed as the setup guy. But by definition, pitching in the 7th or 8th inning is a save situation even if you're not the closer. If Matt Thornton came into a game in the 8th inning with a 1 run lead and surrendered a run, he'd be credited with a blown save even if Bobby Jenks was warming in the bullpen at the time.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) No. Not at all. Never. No one should ever use blown saves and/or lack of saves as a knock against middle relievers. It is a nonsensical and irrational usage of a stat. It is baseball ignorant. It needs to stop forever. The White Sox and the Diamondbacks have the same number of blown saves this season.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Clearly the only answer is to cover up women from head to toe. Make them less desirable. Then crazy wack-jobs won't kill people for feeling rejected. Normally I'd expect me to be posting this to lampoon the fact that this seems easier than getting rid of the f***ing guns.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 27, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) We should be concerned about women. That's why he did what he did. *shakes fist* Ok. What steps should we take in response to the misogyny part of this?
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 26, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) fwiw I think they've skipped their "doodle" on memorial day in the past. No idea why, but I'm pretty sure they do a 4th of July one. The google pages are country specific, anyway (google.com is US, google.co.uk, google.ca etc.) From Googling it appears that this is a regular comment, I found similar questions asked about 2011-2014, with notes that they've done Veterans Day, July 4th, etc. I'm sure they have some reason for doing so given that setup.
  16. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 26, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Semien needs more minor league time Right now he just needs time somewhere. He has 17 PA's in 18 days since both Beckham and Gillaspie came back.
  17. QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 26, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) To me it's a nice plus Rodon's season is done. He pitched 98.2 inning this year, which gives the Sox (or whichever team selects him) a little breathing room to start his professional career. Rodon's Freshmen year, he led the ACC with 114.2 IP, then went out his Sophomore year and threw 132.1 innings. I think the 132 innings would be roughly the maximum they would let him pitch. For reference, Chris Sale pitched 103 innings at FGCU in 2010, then went on to pitch another 33.2 professional. This was a career high for him, blowing away his previous high of 89.1 innings in a season. The Sox then eased his innings back in 2011 with 58 appearances out of the bullpen, totally 71 innings. That's not quite true. He pitched in a summer league the previous season for 40+ innings that don't show up on his college innings list. he basically threw 130 innings in both seasons.
  18. QUOTE (scs787 @ May 26, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) Only problem there would be if Mirotic comes over....Unless of course we trade Taj for Melo . That said, I always see people listing Melo as a PF when talking about this dream scenario. He's capable of playing the 3 right? Question....If and when they get rid of Boozer, assuming it's not in a trade for Melo/Love, how much cap money will they have to spend? Will it be the whole 16+? In said situation, where they can't get a "superstar" would you rather they sign a few guys on 1 year deals and hope to get a "superstar" the following year, or do you spend it all on a guy like Gordon Heyward who's not exactly a superstar but is a damn fine player. Assuming the Bulls do not make a big move, when Boozer is amnesthetized, they will have abot $46.6 million committed to their top 6 guys (I say about in case there is some performance incentive that counts I don't know about). The draft holds for their 2 draft picks bring that to $49.3 million. Then the Bulls have to hold a couple million in reserve to account for the remainder of their roster, bringing them up to about $51.3 million. If the cap is at ~$65 million as has been mentioned, the Bulls will then have $14 million to spend under the cap line. That money could, in part, be spent on Mirotic.
  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 26, 2014 -> 12:02 PM) He blames lax gun laws in one of the 3 toughest states in the country. Should blame the shooter. Should blame a mental health system. Should blame the parents. Should blame his biology for having a f***ed up chemical imbalance or whatever made him crazy. The gun didn't shoot itself. And as people seems to keep 'forgetting' he also stabbed half his victims. Maybe he should also blame that evil cutlery lobby. How about we blame all of the above and this time actually do something about all of the above rather than not doing anything about any of them?
  20. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 26, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) Irrational pet peeve time. It's Rodon not Rondon. Since we already have a Rondon in this org, in the event we do draft him I guarantee this gets worse not better.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 25, 2014 -> 07:00 PM) If you trade players to keep those making MLB minimum you will always have a cheap team competing to stay out of last place. Money should not be the motivating factor at this point and especially if you are building a winning team But if 2 players are able to put up similar overall numbers then it definitely should play into decision making.
  22. DOFP was ok, even pretty good, but First Class was clearly better. The roles were better written, deeper, and more well played, and the action scenes in DOFP didn't measure up to what I was hoping for.
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 25, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Weird I thought closers WERE relief pitchers. Whatever happened to Dustin Hermanson? He retired due to the back problems that derailed him mid-05.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 24, 2014 -> 10:27 PM) Well, we saw the return for Alex Rios. Not pretty. That remains a solid return for Alex Rios.
