WELL DONE JORDAN!
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) He is not ready that is apparent give Micah Johnson a try. LOL, Micah Johnson literally has 2 months at AA. You're kidding right? Semien at least got a year there.
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:46 PM) Are you joking Semien K rate may be worst in baseball on 220 K pace? That was clearly joking. Tyler Flowers also clearly isn't fast. Ergo how much sense did that hit and run make. It was a gift to Cleveland.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:40 PM) Why the f*** is Flowers running It was clearly a poorly timed hit and run.
-
I guess that makes sense, Marcus has a good record of making contact this year and has very low strikeout numbers. Plus the guy on 1b plays a speed position.
-
Well that didn't work very well.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:33 PM) That's an injury problem not a talent problem. Fully healthy, we have a very capable outfield of Abreu-Eaton-Garcia. On the rotation side, we have two sure things in Sale/Quintana. Everything else is a question mark. Plus, there is no OF in the draft worthy of a top-three selection. But of course part of the reason why the rotation is in "critical condition" is that Chris Sale happens to be on the DL right now. I fully agree with you that there's no one other than pitching worthy of that pick, just pointing out that he's only throwing that statement out because it fits his pre-selected agenda to stress out about it.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:31 PM) Giambi needs to retire He'll beat us in the 9th inning again this season at some point

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:21 PM) That is what happens when equally mediocre teams are matched together. So would I be right then in reading that statement as meaning "every team in the NBA is mediocre except for the one that put itself together because competing with the rest of the league was too hard"?
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 3, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) The Major League staff is in critical condition. Get that stabilized as soon as possible and then worry about rounds 2 thru 50 of the draft. This is the price paid for the Wilder scandal, 2/3 of the major league OF is on the disabled list. Shouldn't you be stressing about that?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:19 PM) Except Mike Trout wasn't anywhere near the best player in that draft. One team, REALLY like him. The rest not so much. In your scenario, we don't get Mike Trout. You have made my entire point for me. This site was 1000x time more pissed when we passed on Rick Porcello than when we didn't go for Mike Trout.
-
QUOTE (Disco72 @ May 3, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) Looking at the rotation the past couple of weeks, it looks like the starters for the upcoming Birmingham/Tennessee series will be McCully, Beck, Jaye, Snodgress, and Doyle. Anyone have anything different? That's what I'm expecting.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) So it's simply another version of "insider trading," just don't get caught or put yourself in a position where someone else can prove you've done it beyond a reasonable doubt. There you go. We can't know whether the Sox would have contact behind the scenes. If there's a way to do it, it could be smart before risking drafting the guy and having him go back to school, but any sort of broadcasting that they did so is inviting MLB to take away draft picks as punishment.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2014 -> 11:48 AM) Do they have a right to tell the public they offered him a shot at pitching in the majors in 2014 and he turned it down? When you say before the draft, you mean in the weeks leading up to the draft...or in the actual minutes/clock is ticking time in between selections, or both? Essentially, they're going to have to stick with the "we took the best player available and the one we felt was the best fit for our organization both now and in the long-term" PR spin (if it's not Rodon) and deal with the consequences later on down the line when/if it blows up...or the kudos when their selection (Hoffman/Aiken/Kolek) turns out to be vindicated as the right one in retrospect. Again according to this thread, the say the White Sox don't have the right to make him offers before the draft. It shouldn't matter what the offer is if they're not allowed to make any sort of offer. It doesn't matter what they announce, any announcement would be an announcement of them breaking the rules. Whether you rob the bank by sticking a gun at the teller or by blowing up the wall of the safe, it's still something you don't want to brag about.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2014 -> 11:04 AM) Still, I'm sure there's no way the MLBPA could prevent it if a story "on background without specific attribution/sources" came out the next day simply naming "an unidentified source in the White Sox organization." Would they (the player's association) call that reporter in and force him to reveal the source or threaten to sue? How is it any different than Illitch/Dombrowski making public all of the negotiations with Scherzer...simply because he's already "property" of the Tigers' organization, as opposed to a "free agent"? Because it seems there's a rule saying you're not allowed to negotiate with people before the draft, so coming out and saying that or even leaking that is like bragging about how you robbed the bank. If you're going to break the rule, at least shut up about it. There's no rule about not negotiating with your own players. What you're suggesting is more akin to the White Sox coming out and saying that they made Scherzer a $200 million offer right now. That's against the rules and there would be penalties for doing so.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Or the other way to deal with this Rodon/Boras issue is this... The day of the draft, make an announcement that in that interval between picks, the White Sox offered him $6 million, 10% over slot...15% over slot, whatever. And it was turned down. That way, at least the fanbase would understand why Hahn wasn't willing to destroy the entire draft for a franchise badly in need of more talent and depth across the board. If Epstein were to make that same gamble (putting all of his eggs into one basket) and Rodon quickly blows out his elbow with the Cubs' entire draft being predicated on him turning out more like Mauer and less like Prior, that would be a tough one to recover from as GM. Everyone keeps saying this would be against the rules. And besides, the fraction of the fanbase who has heard of any of these guys is

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) Anyone done a trip to Cumberland in KY? We are considering it with a couple of other places for summer trip. Any comments, experiences, or recommendations? The pictures are paywalled probably but here's an article from my local paper on one hike (the paper features a hike a week on Thursday).

Did Jaye pitch last night? There's no box score link.

I know guys, the Cubs are so impressive. We should seriously be terrified. Just look at their performance.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 3, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) I have resisted really on why and how I really don't want to see sox trade Alexia, I hate saying this but for me it is a factor. Loyalty to the player a Cuban player. hey everyone knows that sometime you need to swallow the poison pill by trading players in order to get better, but how will that play out with other Cuban player now on the roster or any more future dealings with them or new players coming over. those our my thoughts, valid or not, good or bad. peace I don't disagree that this can and perhaps should be a factor in deciding whether or not to move Alexei. Without knowing how the dynamics of the team work behind the scenes I can't say any more than you, but given that we have Abreu and Viciedo on this roster it absolutely needs to be considered. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 2, 2014 -> 11:35 PM) Who was it that used to do that awesome PDF of payroll commitments that was stickied every year. Was that you, Jake? he stopped updating it because Baseball-reference.com literally began posting the exact same data.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 2, 2014 -> 07:21 PM) Aviles and Raburn. Classic Sox killers. Raburn has 72 career RBI against the White Sox and no more than 23 against any other team in MLB.

QUOTE (LDF @ May 2, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) with ref to boras, yes he tries to max out the money for his clients, but doesn't mean that the sox org nor the fans have to like how he does things. for us, the Monday morning QB so to speak, who enjoys talking baseball will venture to say, why deal with him, esp if we might not sign him. the idea of letting a really good or better player go, b/c of certain circumstances is not the right way to get this ship, the sox farm, with quality players. If the white sox don't draft him because they don't like how he does business...that hurts Rodon at least as much as it does the White Sox, if not more. The slot bonuses decline that fast.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 2, 2014 -> 07:05 PM) I'm skeptical about how much anyone earning that much in a non-contract season can net you midseason. Most teams max out their budget in the offseason, making it difficult to accommodate a shiny new >$10M/year shortstop. If he's traded for at the deadline, the acquiring team would only be on the hook for $4 million ish this season. They'd be picking him up for next year yes but that would be impacting next year's budget, not this year's. -
QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) I couldn't agree with you more. I'll be quite disappointed if the Sox pass on Rodon for someone ranked in the 10-20 range, only to have the Cubs pay Rodon what he's looking for and seeing him turn into the star a lot of people have predicted he'll become. Seriously, the Cubs entire draft pool is about $8 million this year. Their entire draft pool is close to the slot value of the #1 pick. If the Cubs draft him and have to pay him that amount and he only gets that far because the White Sox won't, they may as well forfeit the rest of the draft.
