  1. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 03:51 PM) About dam time. (Apparently for some reason he seems to have felt his legal position was improved while he was still in office and there was some sort of settlement agreement reached last night, so his resignation announcement was part of that settlement or followed it immediately).
  2. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) I know he HAS the power, but I'm not sure he will ever fully tap into it during games. I mean, he has never hit more than 14 in a season in the minors, and has 2 HR in 65 career MLB games. I think Avisail may play the speed/contact game more than he will try to hit a ton of HR. Plus, Starberry hit nearly 40 HR a few times. Of course, the counterpoint is that he's a guy who has been several years young for every level he's been at in the minors and only finally broke out this year in AAA, so there's only so much you're going to learn by saying he never hit more than 14 HR a season. He hit 14 HR as a 21 year old split between high-A and AA and only put up a .789 OPS on the full season, so clearly everyone's hoping that those numbers will not be representative of his peak performance several years later.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 02:17 PM) Duke's view of racism is very narrow. What is different about what you're saying than it would have been in 1970? How have the solutions changed? You only think it can't be improved because it has relatively improved since the Civil Rights era and it is therefore difficult to fathom even more progress. The nice thing is that many solutions are in progress and it is called father time. Racists are dying. It is easier for children to come into the world and not become racist than to make old racists change their views. The problem with this solution is that society has done a heckuva job rigging it so that even if everyone came into the world not caring about race, problems like pollution, lack of health care, and poverty are concentrated in certain races and "people dying" does nothing but perpetuate that state.
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) Garcia is an infielder? Oops, I thought he played OF. For now he's a reasonable utility guy but he might well develop into a really solid defensive SS if he's given enough time there. I believe Hawk was saying he is also coming in with quite a long swing so he has a ways to go with the bats, but definitely should have some use to this franchise.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) Down two hours now, and counting. technical problem? Respons to major trading incident? Terrorism?
  6. Maybe Alexei can get an offday before the end of the year.
  7. He's a Democrat so I'll post this here, just so it's noted. San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has done what everyone wanted him to do and agreed to resign following more than a dozen sexual harassment allegations.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) I'm just laughing about the differences in what is worth seeing between here and there. Corn?
  9. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) I sure hope so. He hasn't been to bad in his 4-5 starts it seems. He's gotta stop walking people though. Welcome to developing rookie pitchers. At least one of his walks last night was simply "there's no one on base, Billy Butler is up, I'm going to throw him a bunch of pitches out of the zone and maybe he'll swing at something". It's totally the norm for a guy to come up and be intimidated when he's facing an all star for the first or second time and be overly careful to him. IIRC Rienzo also got himself in trouble and behind in the count when he had a runner on 1st who could steal and started throwing over there a lot.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 01:17 PM) relief pitcher With 1.5 years remaining before he's arbitration eligible, put up 2.0 WAR already this season, extremely likely he would give some team $30 million or more in excess value beyond what he's paid over the next 4.5 seasons. Compare that to Jake Peavy who might put up $10 million in excess value over the next 1.5 seasons if he stays healthy and has a salary large enough to be prohibitive for a moderate portion of the league.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) Southern Indiana, I would like you to meet The Region. Region, Southern Indiana. You're telling an IUB alum who now lives in Tennessee that he isn't familiar enough with southern indiana? Um...hell I have pieces of rock from southern indiana sitting on my countertop. Doesn't mean I have to like all of their interests.
  12. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:59 PM) This is a more rational view. The majority of posters are seeing his short stint here and falling in love. Is he going to hit .326 forever? God no. I think his speed is a nice surprise but his swing has been inconsistent even considering his success. Some games/at bats he just goes up there looking uncomfortable and turning over his bat head. Other days he looks good. I do love his ability to use the whole field though. If you want to make the case that Garcia will turn down from here there's a way to do it. He's had a whole lot of bloop hits. He gets the bat on the ball a fair amount, but he's had a lot of hits fall that will turn into outs as things even out. The numbers agree with this, his BABIP with the White Sox is .417. That will come down.
  13. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) I was not quoting you at all. I don't remember who said what but I remember the crowd was overwhelmingly against acquiring Garcia. Perhaps you can link the thread if you remember which one it was because I don't. EDIT: And some A ballers is so vague. There is a big difference between Courtney Hawkins and Kevan Smith but they're both A ballers. Here's where I said that. There was one person who was down on Garcia, fathom spoke positively on him. All I said was that for Reed, Garcia wasn't enough, and I still stand by that. If the Sox were trading Reed they'd need to walk away with people saying it was highway robbery.
  14. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 01:00 PM) They will square up his curveball and send him back to Rio. Mark my words. I feel like I see a lot of guys come up throwing that big breaking ball and eventually they learn to sharpen it into a real weapon with time.
  15. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:46 PM) And I think that's important to note, he hits .326 in less than 50 ABs and everyone completely changes their views on the player. I remember when there was a thread or an article saying the Tigers were willing to part with Castellanos or Garcia in the right trade. The first slate of responses said basically the same two things, "Let's trade Reed for Castellanos" and "I don't want Garcia." I still would not have wanted Garcia for Reed at all and you're basically quoting me there. I said nothing about Peavy in that comment. Garcia plus some A-ballers is a solid return for Peavy and a terrible return for Reed.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) Hillary has a great chance to run and be elected President. But trying to predict who her opponent will be or how well they could do, is a fools errand. Im pretty sure in 2004/5 no one was saying "Obama is going to be a major player in the 08 election". 3-4 years in politics is a long long time. You know...after his 2004 convention speech, I think a whole lot of people thought there was a shot. I think I was in that boat.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 22, 2013 -> 12:27 PM) Go to Bristol a couple days early and take in a NASCAR race. I'll keep this respectful and just say "no".
  18. Saw the video on the news last night. It's graphic. Yeah, that's a major sarin attack and it's hard for that to be anything else.
  19. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 11:57 PM) I guess it's relevant to this thread, is anyone else disappointed about the prospects we received from the Red Sox? I mean Montas has a big arm and control issues so he's a wild card but the other two? eh Talk to me in 3 years. That's the point of trading for A-ballers who have some skills but are a long way away, they're incredibly hard to pencil in anywhere.
  20. I'd love tips on things to look for while @ Bristol or things to specifically ask their players from anyone else. I'll definitely keep an eye on Sammy Ayala and see if I can get the chance to meet him.
  21. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 09:58 PM) Not really a fit. I would like bringing in Abreu and Crisp, teaching Viciedo how to play 1B and giving Semien a chance to win 3B in ST. LF - De Aza, Viciedo CF - Crisp, De Aza DH - Dunn, Viciedo 1B- Abreu, Viciedo, Dunn 5 players for 4 positions. If someone gets injured or we have a tough LHP on the mound we have options. I know I'll get ripped for having Viciedo on the bench but I am doubting his likelihood of becoming a middle of the order hitter. If the team is ready to cut the cord on Viciedo, just trade him for someone another team is down on, there are plenty. I'd muh rather have someone on the bench who can be a defensive replacement than a pinch hitter in the AL
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 09:53 PM) Where's Granderson going to play? You could still do Viciedo to 1b for a year and then Granderson To DH after a year or so.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 09:35 PM) I would be surprised if it's not that I still think there's a possible chance they move Garcia to CF in the offseason
