  1. Next report is apparently that ARoids legal team prepared to file a malpractice suit against the Yankee team doctor. I have no idea how there is no clause allowing te Yankees to suspend guys when they file lawsuits against the organization.
  2. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 06:03 PM) A "replacement player" is worth 0 wins right? A player like Chris Sale is going to guarantee you at least 10 wins by dominating games. No. A roster full of "replacement players" would not win 0 games. It'd win something like 40 games.
  3. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) When Ben Zobrist ranks as one of the best players in baseball, you know it's a flawed system. I've heard they are going to combine in to one exact calculation at some point, but it hasn't happened yet that I know of. The only flaw I've seen w/ fWAR is that they sometimes favor defense too heavily, but overall everyone seems to agree fWAR is overall far superior than bWAR, which, OF COURSE is the on ESPN cites, so people often discredit WAR all together once they see the funky things like Ben Zobrist being an MVP candidate. Ben Zobrist has 2.9 bWAR on the season.
  4. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) ARod and the players union would easily win a grievance against the Yankees for refusing to play him. I have to believe that his statements about the franchise trying to hurt him yesterday would help the team's cause if they wanted to put him on an inactive list of some sort.
  5. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) What are your guys thoughts on "buying low" on Headley? I'm not sure if it would cost Q or Santiago but if it did would you do that? If he returns to his 2012 numbers that would go a long way towards contending. No I wouldn't give up either of those pitchers for him. Keep in mind...he's a free agent after 2014. If you trade for him in the offseason, you get to choose between extending him and having him put up Gillaspie like numbers or not extending him and then having him hit 30 HR again. I have zero issue with the concept of buying low on him, but Q and Santiago should be treated as some of the most valuable trade chips in all of baseball. Young, cost controlled, left handed starting pitching half a decade from free agency who have already established a record of MLB Success. You don't give up that for a "buy low" guy, you give that up for "a couple of the most talented guys in baseball".
  6. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 11:15 AM) .289/.312/.376 for a n 84 wRC+. Consistent? Perhaps, but consistently 16% below league average. Now, that doesn't mean he's not a solid player. If he plays the defense he's capable of, he's a 3 win guy, but it's not because of his bat. He's 32 and being paid market value, and we have a glut of MI prospects in AA/AAA that are going to need to get some consistent ABs as soon as next year. We've seen his best, and given we're the third worst team in baseball, we just aren't going to gain much paying him to play a little worse each year. League average with the bat though would be one of the best run-producing shortstops in the league. Alexei is about 10th in MLB in OPS at the shortstop position.
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) f*** that. Clemens and Pettitte were juicing back when they were winning 20 games like it was no big deal, the Yankees have had Arod on the payroll while he has been juicing. And there are probably more juicers on those championship teams too. Dont give me this "great, well run"bulls***. They knew. And they went and signed ARod to a SECOND 300 million dollar contract ARods day will come, I dont need Dempster acting like he is the morality police. When did any of those guys accuse the Yankees of trying to hurt them to save money?
  8. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 12:37 AM) Sorry I was completely out of the loop the last couple of weeks because of moving. I caught part of the game Saturday night and heard Wimpy in the booth with Hawk. Why is Stoney out again? He gets a couple series off a year, contractually I believe. That was one of his breaks.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 08:47 AM) That's the frustrating thing about Alexei. He makes plays that nobody else can make, and then can't make plays that everybody else can make. Except in 2012, that wasn't the case with him. He finally cleaned up so many of those stupid, easy mistakes last year.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:20 PM) What is the point to beaning him? You are so tough you stand up for all of them? He didn't do anything to the sox to deserve getting beaned. Fans booed him, it was a circus, move on. Dempster is a dumbass and I'm glad he is on the hook for this game. I think having his camp publicly declare war on one of MLB's great, well-run franchises, with the stuff his camp said yesterday, is pretty good motivation. ARod's s*** stinks so much that he has me being complimentary to the Yankees.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 01:57 AM) Lexi has been miserable defensively this season, right? He's only getting older. No, Miserable is not the right word. He has been "distracted" or "unfocused". That's led to a lot of silly errors, but he still gets to balls that no one else in our system gets to right now.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) Dempster just made himself a lot of fans tonight Lol, Farrell getting asked about that pitch and covering was hilarious
  13. The rest of the report from Olney says Braun was calling other players in 2012 asking for their support and saying he had evidence that the collector was an anti Semite.
  14. Just saw an espn scroll saying Braun is expected to admit juicing in 2011 and apologize to the collector he defamed.
  15. QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:49 PM) I'm not speculating on a Danks return. Just throwing Josh Johnson's name out there. BTW: How the heck did you amass 90k posts since 05. Do you post as much as you breath or something? (Cough). Here's a chance to reply for your 5000th.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:43 PM) I'm not saying I think that's what is happening, but I do think it's weird they moved Garcia from CF to RF so early after nothing bad happened with him out there. I think they just decided that they were going to get him big league at-bats and they weren't going to move either De Aza or Viciedo to RF with no warning mid-season. Viciedo's the right one to move but how long has it been since he's played RF?
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) Or if they're showcasing De Aza in CF for the rest of the year with the thought process he'll be traded this offseason? Yeah, I don't think things like this actually happen. I think the Sox are probably going to hold onto De Aza for at least another year, but they're not keeping him in CF just to "Showcase him". At the very least if they were doing that, they wouldn't keep moving him to LF every time Danks comes into the game.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:28 PM) Phegley has a pretty low ceiling as well, IMO. Now, if they go and get someone like Abreu, that solves a lot of issues if he ends up being a good hitter. The thing is, I don't see why everyone just doesn't root for games where the young players perform well, and then organizational fillers like Axelrod or Troncoso blow the game. If Phegley has that low of a ceiling then I still don't know how he was able to destroy charlotte and I don't know why everyone was so desperate to call him up as the next hero. But yeah, Abreu is just too good of a fit for this roster.
  19. QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:14 PM) What do you guys think about trading Danks and taking a flyer on Josh Johnson for a 1 year to see if we could turn him around? What are we getting if we trade Danks? I'm not trading him if it requires picking up a substantial amount of money. If we trade one of the lefties, that leaves us set with Sale, 2 lefties, Rienzo, and (Erik) Johnson. That's a promising rotation but it definitely is young, inexperienced. Adding in someone like (the other) Johnson to be a bullpen guy or 6th starter would be a necessary step to give some security with that rotation.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:11 PM) But the ceiling for a lot of the guys currently on the Sox is pretty low. And in today's baseball, most high draft picks make the majors a lot quicker than most on here seem to suggest. Someone like Rodon won't spend more than a full year in the minors. After the Garcia deal, I don't think I agree with this any more. The only guy with a really low ceiling is Gillaspie, but he's tolerable for now. Everyone else has a ceiling of a solid/above average player with several guys who could turn into all stars if people can get through to them. The one position where we don't even have that though is 1b. We've got jack squat there for years now unless we sign someone.
  21. I want to see these guys pick it up. Even if, sadly, it saves the job of the manager.
  22. I'm wondering if they just don't want to make that change mid-season and might give it a shot in the spring
  23. Braves signed Tyler Greene to a minor league deal.
  24. QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 05:07 PM) I don't think he sucks, I just think he isn't a valued asset on a "retooling" team and that his high leverage innings could be replaced by the likes of Jones or Webb. The sox have an outside chance to compete next year, its foolish to keep an above average "closer" on a team that isn't expected to contend. The Sox have a chance to compete next year, so they should get rid of their closer because only teams with a shot to compete need a closer?
