QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:53 PM) Iglesias was a guy I wanted from Boston but not many others did here, but the Tigers agreed with me. The Tigers were somewhat desperate and probably overpaid to get a guy who can fill their shortstop hole right now, they were even willing to sacrifice offense because they could get that elsewhere in their team.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:48 PM) Another "hit" that should have been caught by Alexei. 7 ip, 7 ks, 1 BB, 6 hits, shoulda only had 4, 2 ER, shoulda only had one.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:44 PM) Go Fish ! I'm just commenting all game thread posts now. Whoever comments on this is worse than Keppinger

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:16 PM) If a team wanted to pick up Alexei off waivers, and the Sox got nothing back, I'd be happy with that. Get this kid up and bring some new energy. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:22 PM) I totally agree. The organization really needs to trust their player development and go into a full rebuild. please for gods sake can we actually take our time with someone rather than rushing them? Just once? Please?

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:14 PM) You make that sound like a bad thing. That would be great actually. Sale, a couple of number two starters and a couple of number three starters would be pretty solid.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:15 PM) Just remember, the hitting will pick up once the trade deadline passes “@MDGonzales: From Sox notes: Sox starters own a 2.76 ERA (14 ER/45.2 IP) over the last seven games”

Wow what a terrible effort by Dunn

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 03:31 PM) It would be nice if he could develop into a 3B considering Beckham, Johnson, Sanchez, and Anderson are in the system. I think Semien probably has a better chance of becoming a solid SS than any of those guys. The only 1 who seems to be regularly playing SS right now is Anderson and he's a long way away.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) if this is what it takes to get rid of Adam Dunn, count me in. If you want to get rid of Adam Dunn you need to wave your hands over Paul Konerko's back and heal it.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) Remember when Morel showed a lot of pop at the end of his rookie season? That didn't last long. I'd like to hope that he was showing promise but was killed by his back going out.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) Youkilis was pretty terrible after a good start. I thought that was 100% predictable the way the Sox ran him out there every day at 3rd base. I'm pretty sure that's why I was strongly opposed to giving up anything of value for Youkilis before they made the trade for him without giving up anything of value. Playing him at 3rd every day was killing him in Boston and it killed him in Chicago. Ideally he ought to have been playing 2 of every 3 days or something like that, but the backup options the Sox had available were pathetic, so I get why he was out there every dya.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Just because the 3rd basemen in the majors suck horrifically doesn't mean I'm going to sit around and stick with someone like Gillespie. The Sox need to find a legitimate 3rd baseman (or at least a guy with the potential to potentially be that guy). Gillespie does not project to be an every day 3rd baseman. And as he has gotten more at bats, he's actually been worse. After posting a > .800 OPS in April, he has hit .177 and .239 in June/July with his June being a sup .600 OPS. That said his July despite the low average, was his 2nd best OPS (~.750). If he can hit homers like he did in July great, but he doesn't exactly project as a big power hitter (however, 20 hr's from 3rd base is fine and I wouldn't put that past him). I will say this...I'm all in favor of giving the entire year so that we have a better idea of who / what Gillespie is. Of course, as I keep saying, you don't necessarily know who a guy is even from his first full MLB season, or even more than that. He's shown some potential wtih the bats. I don't think he has the power he showed in July with those couple homers, but I absolutely think he's going to wind up putting the ball in play more than we've seen so far as he grows up and that will make a big difference with his average and OBP. I'm hoping he can hop in as a .725-ish's OPS, cheap, good fielding 3b who we bench against tough lefties for whoever we stick on the bench next year. That's fine, this team could compete with that in a couple years and that's pretty close to a league-average 3b. If something better comes along, great, I promise not to be mad, but he's not that far away from respectable numbers during what is basically hsi rookie season.

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:24 PM) In a vacuum, I'm so not a fan of spending what is likely our only super-high draft pick on a pitcher Bah, I am not going to complain about drafting a guy who pairs with Chris Sale at the top of the rotation. If that's how it goes down and they both stay healthy then in 2015 or 2016 we're talking about our own version of the San Fran world series teams. I'll happily trade away some of the pitching we have in order to have 2 guys at the top of the rotation putting up ERA's below 3 (in our ballpark). Man that'd be sick.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) Getting to .750 would be a major stretch. He barely posted any season of .750 plus in the MINORS. And that was the minors. There aren't many people projecting this guy to be a league average 3rd baseman. Could he by dumb luck pan out, sure, but his track record and tools don't necessarily indicate you spend a bunch of time on him. Tyler Flowers, he's a guy you give time (look at how many .800 +, including .900+ OPS seasons he had in the minors and that went along with a good toolset). Not that Gillespie has bad tools, he was a supplemental 1st rounder but he really hasn't given you many indications of breaking out and being a regular 3rd baseman on a GOOD major league team and I want to be good. A .750 OPS would be nearly in the top 10 3b in the league.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) Viciedo has made major strides. I really can't call that a dissapointment. He was raw and the development he's made has been great and is positioning him to turn into a good offensive player. Now, if next year, he's still putting up numbers like this year, then its time to end the experiment. I don't feel like he's made the "Major strides" I wanted to see this year, although the last couple weeks have been very promising. In April and June he looked way too much like the old Viciedo, and he's taken a serious step backwards into comedic performance levels on defense when last year he was closing in on adequate. If he can keep up the growth he's shown the last couple weeks then I'll change my tune, but I wanted to see a lot more of the May version of him this year and we haven't gotten much of that. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) The money wasted on Floyd, Peavy, Konerko, Jeff Keppinger, Rios (not for performance as much as attitude/clubhouse/chemistry), Dunn and John Danks this year has hurt us 10X as much as Viciedo having a disappointing season. To paraphrase Marty, Alex Rios will not be a member of the next White Sox playoff team...Viciedo and Garcia at least have decent to good shots to be there. Outside of Konerko I totally disagree with that statement. The money was not wasted on Peavy. Floyd got hurt, that does happen to guys. Keppinger is paid a pittance. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) The guy has one .800 OPS season in the minors (and it was in the ever inflated PCL). I don't know what about his past screams that he'd be anything league average at 3rd base. The one thing he did do was consistently post good OBP's down in the minors. The league-average OPS at 3b this year is .731 and Miguel Cabrera's carrying a ton of that. 14 teams are getting a .701 or lower OPS out of 3b this year. Yes the Sox are one of them, but he does not need an .800 OPS to be league average.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 01:58 PM) It also as if he hasn't been paying attention to anything Viciedo has done at all for the last month or so....lazy writing, again. Doubt he's even watched a single Sox game since the Cubs-Sox series at the end of May. For a while he had some good one-liners, I can't tell if I've just grown out of them or he's gotten lazier. Death-spiral Dave was always a nickname of his I liked though (For Wannsteadt). -

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 01:58 PM) Maybe we keep Rios? I doubt it though, but rather than being forced into some salary dump for a pretty good ball player let's consider off season trades. Garcia will be up soon enough. I actually think Viciedo is the disappointment this year and not Rios Obviously Viciedo is the disappointment this year out of the two, but Viciedo is also the one under team control a lot longer. He's part of the possible long-term future if he can be developed, Rios is not. That's why you move Rios for nothing other than salary savings at some point to clear space for Garcia if you have to move someone. Alternatively one of them could be moved to 1b, but as we've noted that does negate the advantage which is Viciedo's arm. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-08...n-dayan-viciedo Oh good, an unfunny, whiny rosenbloom article. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 01:16 PM) His lack of experience and skill showed markedly last September. I just don't see how a player who has never even sat on a bench as a coach and then was away for a decade, has the credentials as a manager. And it's not all him...he had accept the legacy coaches as assistants, of course. Can you give some examples of what he specifically did wrong last September? My impression was that it wasn't Ventura making mistakes as much as it was the team being exhausted. Quintana, Sale, and Peavy were all about the limit of innings they could humanly be expected to throw, and guys like Youkilis and Konerko were being run into the ground because they had no backups (to be fair of course, the backups for a lot of positions were traded away to get guys like Youk, so at least last year there was a good reason why the regulars were worn out).

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) No, we don't Actually we might have to be...depends on what they want to do with Garcia though. If they want him starting...there's no starting spot in the OF right now. -
QUOTE (glangon @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) Should we not reflect this year on the banner. The pointless smile from Ramirez (the stupid grin he does whenever he makes an error) on one side with a frustrated looking Sale (the look he has when the team makes a stupid error that costs him another win) on the other side. It sums up the season perfectly. Do we have a picture of Robin sleeping?
