  1. By the way, the Congress passed and the President yesterday signed a bill significantly weakening the "STOCK" act, the already watered down act that took a few steps to try to limit insider trading by members of Congress.
  2. QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) Jesse Rodriguez ‏@JesseRodriguez 27s AP source: Arrest imminent in marathon bombings King now says an arrest has been made, citing CNN's Fran Townsend and a Boston law enforcement source.
  3. CNN is running with this now: We'll see if they have turned themselves into the NYPost or not.
  4. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) They don't need to. They can use the other card. Hey, there's ANOTHER guy from Krypton with the same powers, but he's BAD. Kneel before Zod!
  5. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) There was another envelope with ricin found. This one was addressed to Obama. Edit: Could not find anything online about him being caught. Everything says they are still investigating. The whole capitol appears to be in freakout mode today. Several floors of the Hart Senate office building have been evacuated (reportedly a person with a backpack containing sealed envelopes), and I believe there was a hazmat team at Senator Levin's office in Michigan.
  6. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) ‏@BostonGlobe BREAKING NEWS: Source: Officials are “very close” in the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombings. @BostonGlobe BREAKING NEWS: Source: Authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene. Source tells CNN's John King that Boston authorities believe they have identified a suspect in bombings.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) Fine, it was poor journalism. It wasn't purposefully done with a racist or fear mongering intent. And you know this how? You work for the Post?
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 10:30 AM) I don't think they ever used the word in "custody." They said a Saudi suspect was being guarded at a hospital, which ended up being 100% accurate. Except he was, by definition, never a suspect. At the most he was a "Person of interest", and the police never described him publicly as that.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) So someone that is kept under guard and whose house is searched for nine hours can't be labeled as a suspect? GMAB. The authorities have various "suspects" during their investigations. Some pan out, some don't. To claim that the media was doing that to invoke fear of brown middle eastern people is ridiculous. Calling people suspects early in the case worked out great after the Olympic park bombing. Only a few million dollar settlements paid out.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) So it's racist and fear mongering for news outlets to report on fact. Got it. The fact that they jumped to the conclusion that a victim of the bombing was a suspect because he was Saudi is where that comes from. Every victim probably will get a visit from the FBI, but the NY Post decided that they could get an advantage by running the story about the Saudi and calling him a suspect when he was in fact not a suspect and the police denied that they had any suspects.
  11. The Royals kids are hitting like they play for the White Sox.
  12. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 08:26 PM) Grainger. Of course tomorrow we'll be down. This is one of the few times when we report we actually get good gains. While we usually have good or solid numbers we typically go up before we report then down when we actually report. People buying on the insider news?
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 09:00 AM) I don't care what any thinks, Thibs is the NBA coach of the year. This has been the case for the last 3 years.
  14. Suddenly I think I've lived through this week before.
  15. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 05:00 PM) But ballpark factor is exactly why ERA is not a good way to judge pitching. But you know what? That simply isn't "Great pitching". Top of the league in ERA ought to be the standard for great pitching. With the ballpark factor you might tell me it's tolerable...it's clearly not "Bad" pitching, but it's not the level of pitching that will carry a team to the playoffs. If the Sox were averaging #3-4 in ERA per year, fine, with the ballpark factor you can call that great pitching. They're not. They're middle of the pack.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 04:43 PM) Which is incredibly hard to do. And to me it's all the more amazing that we could have such mediocre teams with such great pitching year to year. Ultimately, that's a failure. Yeah I know there's a ballpark effect built in, but in terms of ERA, the Sox haven't had "Great pitching" the last 3 years, they've had mediocre pitching. Each of the last 3 years the Sox have been 8th or tied for 8th in the AL in ERA. Compare that to 2009, they were 2nd in the AL in ERA. They've invested a lot in their pitching staff in both money and talent and it has not produced great pitching year to year. A whole lot of that, FWIW, is Jake Peavy and his associated injury, which has hurt every one of those years.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 03:24 PM) Definitely. That's what I mean about making sound long-term investments. The downside is that you have to wait for those opportunities to come rather than just deciding to go Blue Jays/Marlins one year. We would have to be content that the changes our team makes for next year may simply not be enough for next year. But, if those changes don't hurt us AFTER next year, then we'll be improving from a better base from then on. And yet this entire thread comes about because no one, not a single person here, has been content with the results of making moves this offseason that were designed to build the foundation rather than winning immediately. Playing kids while they struggle, not letting guys like Gavin Floyd go until you have a trade partner and a replacement, not spending money on the big FA splash, filling holes but not doing so with guys so expensive they can't be replaced.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) True, but this seems to corrolate with age. They have to get younger. When they bring someone up to try to develop them you'll just get tired of them and want to trade them.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 03:08 PM) Marathons are tough, because people have to bring and leave bags, by the very nature of the event. You can't take stuff with you. It's also going to be nearly impossible to secure a 26 mile route. How many trash cans are passed in a major city over 26 miles?
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Like it or not, that hitter is likely to be Viciedo. You're better off reviving your "Trade Alexei Ramirez" threads because we actually have a replacement in the pipeline in Carlos Sanchez. What we don't have is anyone close to major league ready capable of hitting 25-35 homers, and, despite your protestations to the contrary, it's just NOT THAT EASY to find a young hitter who's cost-controlled and who can put up those numbers. If it was that simple to hit based on minor league numbers, Cris Carter wouldn't be bouncing around so much at this point in his career. Why would a team with that kind of young impact bat trade him to the White Sox when there's a premium now on exactly those types of hitters? Carlos Sanchez is not the replacement for Alexei Ramirez until we have a clear long term plan for 2b and 3b. Alexei is the only guy we have a good track record for out of that group.
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) By law, sure, but that doesn't mean they can't really hold it against you or that they have to pay you for the days you miss. For trials longer than a few days, you're generally allowed to claim financial hardship if your employer does not pay you for the time.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) I don't see anything crazy there, just someone who is clearly uninformed. Exactly the description I'd like to hear about people on the House Intelligence Committee.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) I think it's premature to say he's not a bust. You don't spend two years waiting on a guy to develop as a LF'er and his K-to-BB ratio says it all. For once, I'm going to agree with marty. The one thing he needed to work on this offseason was improving his approach. He's completely failed to do that so far. People are getting him out on balls he should be crushing because he can't square anything up, every swing seems defensive while he's down in the count.
