DING-DONG THE METRODOME IS DEAD- Sox/Twins game thread

Man this is a slow moving inning -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 07:29 PM) I actually really like Hector's upside, I think he can be a quality starter for us at some point If he learns to keep his offspeed stuff down he could be a very solidly above average starter.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 06:54 PM) Law specifically prohibits. There is no law that specifically prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation at the federal level To be fair, fixed. About 20 states have done so.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 05:57 PM) Honestly though, I think Robinson's an upgrade over Watson. C.J. shot like s*** in his first year. He started out last year shooting well, then fell off a cliff when he got extended playing time.hurt and had to play through it since Rose was also hurt. To be fair, fixed that for you.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 06:21 PM) Wait and see how Floyd finishes the season. That one could go either way. I don't think he's a $9.5 million pitcher, but we've paid that to Javy, Contreras (extension, after he was no longer dominant), Garcia and Garland, and Gavin fits in with that grouping, all things considered. The guys the Sox have in the rotation next year without signing Liriano are: Danks Floyd Humber Sale Quintana If Danks won't be ready for opening day then yes, we need another pitcher. If Liriano is signed and Danks is back, yes you have room to move Floyd. And Castro, Santiago, and Axelrod are all available as options who might force their way into the rotation as well.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 05:44 PM) They are a company, not a religious institution. They probably don't discriminate in hiring. They butt right up against the lines of discrimination and have been sued about a dozen times for it.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) By "stupid-high", I mean significantly more than $8 mil a year. Unless I'm missing something, Rose+Noah+$8 mil for Taj+4 rookie contracts (Butler, Teague, next two 1sts)= roughly $44 million. Obviously there would be some cap holds as well, but that's around $10 mil in space. The big variable there is what happens with Taj. Taj is going to get significantly more than $8 mil a year if he hits the open market. Count on it.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) First, we do see this being discussed in mainstream sources or we wouldn't be discussing it right now. It's clear that CO2 is *a* driver...but it's not the only driver. There is a lot more to know about this before people like you continue sounding the alarm bell. Science based on politicized fear is a poor approach to discussion and it's the main driver of the denial you seem to hate. You propagate this attitude in your posts, as do others who continue chanting, "The British are coming!", in regard to AGW, when, in fact...they only *might* be coming, we're pretty sure they're coming...but we aren't positive...yet...and IF they are coming, they'll get here in 75 years when none of us will be alive. This is a piss poor way to convince people of something. Yeah, I'm coming back to hit one more thing. Forgiveness please. This entire day's discussion on this issue was motivated by a group from Berkeley who went in and tested what they thought was faulty statistics, in an effort to show that CO2 was not the only driver, which was their bias going in. They wound up coming to a stronger conclusion than the IPCC and saying that human-released CO2 was, within error, the only driver of the temperature change in the last 250 years. Just wanted to highlight that discrepancy.

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) This reminds me so much of the stories coming out when we acquired Edwin Jackson. Coop knew that EJ was flying open on his delivery which caused him to lose his control.....well, hopefully Liriano is a better student than Jackson was because Jackson continued to fly open which made his nintendo stuff useless seemingly 50% of the time. Didn't Jackson's yearly ERA drop from >5 to

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) The problem is they wouldn't really have any space unless they dumped multiple players. Even with Boozer gone, Rose/Deng/Noah is already $42 million. Then you add Kirk's deal ( unless they have to match a stupid-high offer for Taj. I think it's perfectly logical to assume the offer to Taj will be stupid-high next offseason.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) just out of curiosity, how would you feel if someone told you what your religion could and couldn't recognize? Be clear there though...if someone's religion wants to refuse to recognize interracial marriage, no one is telling them they can't be bigots. The state stepping in and reminding everyone that interracial marriages count less would seem to me to be a different matter.

QUOTE (sunofgold @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:11 PM) Maybe. Have to see what he does now with the White Sox and Cooper. This guy has talent. Still striking out over a batter an inning. I heard that is BABIP is high and his gets hitters to hit a nice amount of ground balls. His BaBIP is .298 on the year, lower than his .309 career mark.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) With their history since the 80's, they would be right around the top of my worst organizations list. Which goes to illustrate how rapidly that list can turn over. Tampa Bay would have been on everyone's worst organizations list in 2006 or so.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:56 PM) I do too. I'm going from memory but didn't KW sign Freddy Garcia to an extension shortly after trading for him? He may do the same with Liriano, especially if Floyd gets moved. Be honest...does anyone really want Liriano signed to a multi year deal? I'd gamble on him for next year if the price was in the 7 figure range, but would anyone commit 3/$30 to a guy who has had an ERA above 5 three of the last 4 years?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) I guarantee it happens. I've gotten comments twice for being married to a "non-white" (both times were in Chicago of all places too). So if I'm getting comments for something that has been going on a lot longer, you better believe it happens quite a bit for something that as a whole is far less accepted in society. I think its unfair. To be honest, I think there are 2 debates. One is the religious debate regarding marriage. The other is the equality debate. I can see someone making the religious argument and understand there view (even if I disagree with it). However, I can't understand how you can't create a civil union which provides a gay couple the same exact rights as a married couple. Plus, to be frank, the religious side of the argument, shouldn't be up to the government. Just out of curiousity, how would you feel if your marriage was described as a "Civil Union" and you couldn't call it a marriage because churches objected to the union and wanted to make sure you were made to know it?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 11:06 AM) Hey Balta...do you feel like we have a pretty good handle on what realistic actions we could begin taking that would make the most sense, both economically and scientifically, in terms of taking the biggest bite out of this while simultaneously getting the biggest bang for our buck? It seems like for years we heard about how much our vehicles and driving behaviors had to do with this, and yet I seem to remember reading a few times that CO2 emissions from vehicles is but a small part of the problem. Have we reached the stage where we feel confident in what we've learned to actually start dedicating ourselves to solutions that will not waste our precious resources, whether financial, time, or otherwise, instead of wasting those precious resources on foolish solutions that make little impact if any? It seems like any time there is a big problem, there are some immediate measures that can be taken that will take a pretty big chunk out of the problem, and then further study reveals additional steps to be taken until it is eventually whittled down to much smaller levels. I totally missed this post. There are, I'd say, lots of analyses of the economics and effectiveness of various measures, but since the country has literally adopted zero of them and has stepped up to make sure that very few of them are ever even tried, there aren't very good answers. It is safe to say that there is no single magic bullet, but I'm totally convinced that the technology to massively cut the carbon emissions nationwide have already been deployed, and could have been deployed sooner if the government hadn't slowed things down. If we had the political will, I think we could have basically put the U.S. on a path to declaring "this country's carbon emissions reductions will beat the Kyoto goals" 10 years ago. We do not have the political will to do so and there's no sign of that changing. Basically, I think there's zero sign that we're going to do anything other than "live with it".

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:17 PM) I have a sneaky suspicion that Liriano somehow ends up back here again next year. We'll see. I'm sure someone checked this when we traded him...would we be likely to get draft pick compensation if Liriano walked?
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:14 PM) I sure hope so. If anything maybe they can restructure his deal. I also want them to bring back A.J. I am not worried so much about Peavy, Floyd or even Liriano. I know KW has a knack of bringing in quality pitching. Expecting him to stay healthy at that price for a full season at 3b is a huge, huge gamble. I don't know that I'd take it.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:05 PM) Agreed. So far KW has brought in players that have expirering contracts or options. KW has done a lot with very little financial flexibility. There is no way he can bring in that contract right now. They still need to figure out what to do with these guys this offseason too: Floyd ($9.5 million option) Peavy ($4 million buy out) Pierzynski (Free Agent) Youkilis ($13 million option) Myers ($3 million buy out) What will happen to those guys will depend a lot on whether the Sox can make the playoffs and what kind of ticket sales boost they get out of that.

2012 Summer Olympics Thread

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 12:29 PM) Stolen from twitter: "I'm not suggesting that NBC's use of tape-delay is getting out of hand, but I think they just aired something from the 2008 Olympics." The NBC Delayed twitter feed is pretty good. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) It's specifically a state license and document right now, kinda like a corporation. You can have the state enforce all sorts of non-state contracts, though, like the loan you took out for your house. Anyway, I wouldn't agree with removing marriage from government because I think it serves a useful legal function in that regard, but I do agree that it needs to be either fully and freely available to all or not a part of government at all. The current situation is a violation of peoples' rights. Even basic things in society wind up involving marriage. We're not just talking about tax returns or social security benefits, we're talking about things like hospital visitation rights, right to speak on the other's behalf, right to not testify against your spouse in court, and on and on. The idea that the government can just "Get out of the business of recognizing marriage" is foolhardy. You're not going to take away the right to avoid testifying against your spouse from everyone.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 12:07 PM) worst shade of green ever. There you go, making everything about color again. Is there nothing you won't discriminate against?!?!?!
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 12:00 PM) That's a violation of federal law. Do you mean discriminate in the marriage context? No, and it's not a violation of federal law unless you're being hired for a government job. You can deny housing to people because they're gay in those states. You can refuse to hire someone because of sexual orientation.
