  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 11:33 AM) Jewels have TCF "branches" in some of their stores with an ATM and a couple of tellers. They're a terrible bank but I don't think it was a scam. You're missing the joke.
  2. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 03:17 PM) Yes. Please take Soreyano, Tiggs. Let him hop around there lol. Thankfully Detroit has a small outfield so he won't be required to cover a lot of ground out there, right?
  3. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 11:01 AM) I agree man, but everyone here thinks there is no chance we have the assets. I just don't have faith in the rotation holding up the rest of the season and hopefully for a extended October run. If Peavy or Sale go down we are beyond screwed not only for the pennant chase but for a playoff series. We have seen pitching, not a world beating offense wins championships in October. I just would feel a lot more comfortable with another proven veteran starter, doesn't have to be an ace but a solid 2 or 3. I would feel a heck more comfortable even with someone like Demps. I think KW needs a starter and Utlitly INF before 3PM. If there were one available at a reasonable price, we'd all see the benefit in having an additional upper rotation starter, but seriously, we don't have the assets and there aren't obvious ones available. Joe Saunders was the only name I saw in reply, and he might fill some innings, but he's not a solid 2 or 3 in the AL.
  4. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 10:32 AM) Both NY's and TEXAS interest in BS, it's classic Theo stirring up interest to get this deal done. Theo is getting nervous with LA closing in on Victorino. Texas would be better off with Ogondo in the rotation then Demps and I don't think the Yanks would be interested in Dempster pitching in the AL East. Everyone is saying Dempster won't come to the Sox, well he sure as hell won't stay with the Cubs after everything. If Theo has a decent package from KW and LA says no deal, I think Dempster would accept a deal to stay in Chicago and enter a playoff chase. If LA doesn't pull the trigger I could easily see KW swooping in I get the impression he'd be content just playing out his contract.
  5. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 10:07 AM) Better than those guys when? When those guys are "on", or close to it? Or better than those guys right now? It may not take much more than a corpse to pitch better than some of the performances lately. I don't know who as I really don't follow other teams that closely. There are what, about 12 - 13 teams that would consider themselves out of it by now. There must be at least one of them with a #3 - 4 starter that could be gotten. These guys would be far from "ACE" quality, but maybe good enough to keep their team in the game for a few weeks. Better than those guys should be over the last 2 months, counting the likely ups and downs. Let's say that they each gave average ERA's in the range of 4.5-5. Who is better and available?
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:47 AM) The Cubs can't move Dempster without his approval. Forget about Dempster, for whatever reason, he does NOT want to pitch for the White Sox. So, then I ask, who is left who is both better than Floyd/Humber/Quintana and available at a reasonable price? There are guys available who are better (Lee) but the Sox simply aren't in that game. We stole Liriano to fill that 6th starter spot.
  7. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) If the offense stays fairly good I don't think that you need an "Ace". If K.W. could find someone who can keep the team in the game for 6 - 7 innings every 5th day, that may be all you need to get to the playoffs. Then you hope that 2 - 3 of the starters are good enough, with live arms to take it from there. I would hope that we find someone, who I don't know, that could help out in August. I have a feeling that Santiago may help out a lot in September if he can be stretched out by then. Other than that I think that right now you have to hope that Peavy can last a while longer and that Humber and Floyd can at least give you a chance every time out. The other thing it needs to be is better than someone in our top 6. And really, there aren't a whole lot of guys out there who are obviously better than what the Sox can throw out right now who would be available for little.
  8. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) Healthy is the key. No one if Sale is healthy, but what are the odds that Chris Sale is healthy, with a live arm come October? Therein lies the rub. This has shades of the 2000 season all over it. The starters are good enough to get you there, but dead tired and "shot" when it arrives. Then honestly, let's be satisfied with getting there. Seriously, if Sale is dead tired by the time the playoffs come around, we're not going to find a guy who can replace him.
  9. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:17 AM) I agree, with everything. I really hope KW adds another few players in the fold. Mitch Williams even said it on CTL last night, KW has done some good thinks. But if he were the GM he said he would no doubt add another starter, and an ace at that KW doesn't have the talent to trade for an ace, and he probably doesn't have the room to take on an "ace" salary commitment.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) I've never been approached at the grocery store aside from by a tcf rep at jewel. A bank? Fine, you win, you got approached with the biggest scam.
  11. I've been given LaRouche stuff at the grocery store before.
  12. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 01:28 AM) Soto=the Gordan Beckham of catchers. Are you suggesting that Beckham was juiced in 08?
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) 3/42 Thank you.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 09:26 PM) If we could get Liriano on a two year deal at about the money that Floyd is making, I'd sign him and see what the market is for Floyd and Humber. I would probably do that for 2/$18, but I figure it has to take more than that to sign him, especially if he performs well enough that we'd want him back. I can't imagine there being a big market for Humber.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 07:07 PM) What's the latest on Molina? Any chance he's in the AFL or winter ball (hopefully KW will be paying more attention to his whereabouts this around) in Venezuela? Rienzo might have an outside shot, too. Petricka had been on something of a fast track but now he's been passed by the likes of Johnson and Snodgress, maybe even Vance...seemingly. Whether they send Molina to winter ball probably depends a lot on innings. He's thrown 93 innings so far this year with a month to go. His tops was 130 last year. If they think one of the reasons he struggled this year is that his arm isn't built up yet, they'll hold him back from winterball. If they think that he needs the innings, they'll send him.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 08:57 AM) But nobody would have taken that contract. We could still have a huge debate over whether someone would take Rios' contract (because of his age and his every other year tendencies) just assuming the contract alone. And he's arguably our best player right now. Certainly best all-around player. That doesn't mean no one asked about him. That means no one was willing to take him on for 4/$42. For all I know, someone could have said "yes, I'll take Dunn on if you pay 1/2 of that" and the Sox would still have said no, because they weren't in a position to come up with $21 million for a guy not playing for them.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:01 AM) Look at how much Dotel, MacDougal and Linebrink cost us salary-wise. Of course, we had to "rescue" the pen with Myers, but they shed Ohman and Frasor and have been able to use that money in other places. We had to "Rescue" the pen because the highly paid guy in the bullpen, Crain, got hurt.
  18. The Braves have not won on a Monday since August 2011. 16 straight losses. Beating the Fish now.
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 08:49 PM) You mean the very controversy he himself dismissed? You don't have to bother. http://books.google.com/books?id=6DBnS2g-K...%22&f=false The best part is, he basically is saying the same thing I said to you guys on here in his warning to politicians and future presidents. And now he perfectly reproduced the graph.
  20. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 08:47 PM) Because they're morons? How could they, or anyone with a brain consider someone a skeptic that was ringing the alarm bell about this for almost a decade before this BEST study you continue to reference? That's just stupid. For crying out loud, Koch industries in part funded the study.
  21. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 08:44 PM) ...and again, he was never a skeptic. Someone just go to his Wikipedia page and excerpt the part on the "hockey stick controversy" for me.
  22. Deforestation for one. We've probably been doing that for about 6000 actually. Let me try to clear the language up. The best way I've heard it presented is that CO2 is the biggest knob in the Earths climate history. If CO2 is going up its getting hotter, if CO2 is going down its colder. That holds together incredibly well in the geologic record. Other things play a role, but they are weaker than CO2. And oftentimes, they have their effect amplified by CO2. The recent climate cycles are driven by solar changes much to small to build or destroy glaciers on their own without the CO2 swings. If we focus on the recent time, CO2 is effectively the only driver. Nothing else in the system correlates with temperature, temperature correlates with CO2 incredibly well, and the changes are exactly what you'd expect if CO2 were the only thing driving this warming. That's why I always ask for others who question the CO2 temperature link what mechanism they have to explain the warming. Warming doesn't happen by magic. It only happens if something changes, and the only thing that could do this is CO2.
  23. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 08:24 PM) You should hear how dejected Dick and Bert sound facing Konerko Not as sad as that hr call.
