QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) Saw the video; did not see anything justifying a major bonus. Of course, you're looking at a 16 year old and trying to project where he'll be at 22-23.

Guy in White Sox Jersey in 2nd row down the RF line just into HR territory = me. Good show please, Pedro.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) Apparently the Mavs had even less cap space than we do. So I'm very interested to know the details of this signing. That doesn't make any sense to me, they had enough room at the start of FA to offer Deron Williams a max deal, so it's almost impossible that they're up against the luxury tax.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 12:50 PM) What caused the previous rapid rises, and further, what then caused it to fall on it's own since we weren't here to interfear? I'm not a scientist...and I don't pretend to be. I simply reject the modern idea because it's happened before, and will happen again...with or without us. Can't answer all questions before sleeping but will try with this one. There are a large number of ways to change atmospheric CO2, because the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is fairly tiny compared to the amounts that have been stored on land or in the earth over geologic time. Therefore, you can have any of these mechanisms, and in fact a huge number more, happen and that can wind up changing CO2: Die-off of plant life Ocean turnover (Bringing up ocean water from the bottom of the ocean, which can have carbon in it) Decrease of weathering rates Melting of ices (Ices can contain lots of locked-up carbon) Erosion of a geologic unit with a lot of carbon Increase of certain types of volcanic activity Desertification Sea level changes (exposing more or less land to biomass). Acid rain (erodes carbonate rocks) Overpredation/extinction of key species Just a few examples coming to mind late at night. Now, there's a lot of reasons why some of those would increase or decrease CO2...but the fun part scientifically is...theyhave different chemical signatures. Between the isotopes of carbon and oxygen, and the other signatures (like weathering rates, soil formation, evidence of glaciers) we can put together pictures of how they work and understand what the balances are. Getting a very rapid rise in CO2 geologically, it turns out, is fairly difficult. Most of those mechanisms are pretty slow. Volcanism, erosion, glacial advance/retreat, those are processes that take thousands or millions of years. The only one that really works fast is melting of methane clathrates, which are stable ices that are formed by the presence of methane and can lock up a very large amount of the gas. If you trigger the release of that, through some external event (like warming the ocean, or an impact, or something else) you can release that gas very quickly to the atmosphere. This has probably happened a few times, most recently about 45 million or so years ago I think, and then maybe a few others. That type of event is our only geologic comparison for what we're doing, taking carbon out of the earth rapidly and pumping it into the atmosphere. How does carbon go back down? Well a few things like increasing biomass or putting trees in the arctic can help, but those aren't the big lever. The thing that really draws carbon back down responds on the 10,000 year + timescale...that is erosion. You warm the planet up, you increase weathering of silicate rocks because those weathering rates respond to temperature. You warm the planet, you get faster weathering, and eventually that carbon gets pulled back out of the atmosphere and deposited/locked up in sediments in the Earth again. If we went away right now, the planet would warm another degree or so from what we've already released, probably melt most of greenland in the next 100 years or so and maybe a portion of antarctica, and then weathering rates would start to pick up from the elevated temperatures. Within maybe 100,000 years, the plug of CO2 that we've released will be close to used up.

Well how about that. Give us a good show Kid.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:46 PM) The Bulls got rid of Doug Collins after he had some success for a no name Phil Jackson. As soon as Jesus is available to coach by simply rubbing his hands over Rose's knee, I'll agree with you that the Bulls need a new coach. Until then, I'm satisfied with one of the best coaches in the league.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:27 PM) You are allowing Thibs absolutely NO ROOM for error considering it's his first year as a HC. Considering how effective that team was on both sides of the ball in his first year as a head coach, I don't th ink he needs room for error. The only way that heat series could have gone another way is if Korver hit his outside shots or Rose and Boozer were healthier.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:24 PM) Why would you extend Thibs early? Hes under contract, no real incentive. Because he'd get someone offering him a fortune if he finished up next year without a contract.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) Do you think Boozer is better than Taj? If both are healthy, yes. Boozer is a better offensive player, Taj is a more effective defender.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) Im not saying the Bulls should fire him, I am saying that the Bulls need to keep all options open and if Thibs does not show a drastic improvement this year, I would not resign him. Dont believe I ever said fire him, I think you should let him coach out this year and see what happens. 3 years is a good amount of time to see if Thibs can improve. He could improve, I see no reason why he cant. I just am saying if he does not improve, I would not resign him next year. Happily he'll get his extension done before October and then we won't have to worry about this conversation at all.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:09 PM) Did you watch the video? It showed missed pick and rolls, missed movement, etc. Derrick Rose breaking down the defense is great, the problem is when you have Deng not even touching a man on a screen. When you have Asik not moving correctly towards the basket thats a problem. When you have Asik come out as the screener which brings an immediate double to Rose, thats a problem. If you watched the film, youll notice 1 thing he kept repeating, Taj Gibson. But did Thibs start Taj this year? No. Did Taj play more minutes than Boozer, no. Taj averaged 10 less minutes than Boozer in the regular season and 11 in the postseason. But dont worry, the Bulls have no issues with their coach. Boozer actually shot a higher %age last year than in the previous year, which isn't surprising since he was healthy. Boozer's PER last year was 19.7, Gibson was 16.9. Boozer shot 53% last year, Gibson 49%. Boozer was banged up like normal Boozer in that playoff series, so yes, Gibson was going to have chances to be effective. He's still not an incredible scoring option. Asik coming out and brining a screener to Rose isn't a problem if you can rotate the ball to another shooter. If Asik isn't ina position to shoot, someone has to cover him and he can pass the ball out...if you have another shooter. Yes, missed screens are a problem. If there was a stat for that, I'd love to see how the Bulls compare on m issed screens to other teams, but that's not a stat I know about. It seems like a whole lot of teams miss screens against the Bulls because they're pretty good at rotating around them.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) Yeah, except I fear hamilton proved to be much worse on defense than Thibs had anticipated... Mostly because for anyone other than Spoelstra it's really hard for guys on the bench in a suit to be effective defenders.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) But in 2012 the Bulls did the same nonsense on offense, there was basically no improvement on that end in terms of play calling and running plays. Nothing that I see them doing in that video is "nonsense". That's the basis of their system, Rose driving and breaking down the defense., The problem there is that if no one else is making a shot, particularly Korver, the Heat can collapse on Rose and it winds up being 3-4 on 1 because they don't have any other fear of an outside shot. That is why Hamilton was supposed to be the key addition...a guy who can hit that mid-range jumper from the SG spot without sacrificing defense as was done with Brewer. If you had Hamilton, 2 bigs, Rose, and Korver/Deng in at once, you have the ability to kick out to either Hamilton or Deng, whoever is left open, or you have an empty path for Rose.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 03:32 PM) Stiemsma actually had a lower DRating than Asik last year and Asik had a 92, which was one of the lowest in all of the NBA. I have no idea what this stat means?

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 03:23 PM) I get the notion that the Bulls feel like they have invested so much time into him, that they don't want to see him blossum somewhere else, but it just doesn't make sense to me, especially with Taj coming up for a contract. Like it or not, he's still a 26 year old 7 footer who can play solid defense, and there aren't a whole lot of those in the league. He's been in there 2 years, so he still might wlel have room for his offensive game to grow.

The Bulls should get a trade exemption of some level out of that also.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 02:37 PM) Yeah can't wait for the press to fall all over her like they did with Barack. No questions asked. Sure they will be just as gung ho thrill up their pants with the first woman/black VP being a Republican....... Waits for hell to freeze over. Technically she'd be the third female VP nominee.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) @adbrandt Looks like Brees has a staggering $40M in 2012. Saints have 3-day window to get out in February, otherwise $15M more gteed in 2013. How can they possibly have that much room available? Abraham's suspension?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 11:36 AM) All right, so I think we are doing the extremely touristy thing and taking the kids to the Sky Deck of the Sears Tower on Monday (Yes, I still call it Sears, f*** Willis). I had no idea it was so damned expensive though, is there somewhere or way to get discounted tickets? They are $17 an adult and $11 a kid for regular price. Have they ever done a groupon? After googling, yes they have. Otherwise, googling Willis Tower coupons seemed promising.
