QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 05:04 PM) They have Eric Gordon. That'd be pointless. That assumes Gordon signs an extension.

If Giving up Matt got the Sox a legit, solid upgrade at 3b, I'd certainly consider it. That just isn't Youkilis.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 04:10 PM) Why is that scary? Dwight isn't going to NO. New Orleans offering a max deal to CP3 again?

KW whining about (OK bringing up) attendance again

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 04:07 PM) The point is, they shouldn't cry about money. How many other teams cry about lack of funds? Of course many times when KW cites a lack of money, he spends some soon after. JR remembers where he hid it. I get the feeling almost all of them do at one point or another. The only time they don't is when they're going on a spending binge like the Phillies 2 years ago or the Rangers the last 2 years. Then when those contracts get expensive and the guys get old, they resume crying poor. -
KW whining about (OK bringing up) attendance again

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 04:01 PM) The White Sox had the 10th highest revenue last season according to Forbes. Their attendance problems are overblown. As we all know, if they dropped prices a bit, the attendance would go up. They are afraid of having great attendance but around the same or slightly higher revenue. It will make the $.50 vs. $1.00 argument look silly. And conveniently, they have the 11th highest payroll, after having the 5th highest payroll in 2011. -
You want the real scary thing? The top 2 unrestricted free agents next offseason...when the Hornets will have cap space...Dwight, and Chris Paul.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 03:38 PM) Does it put Charlotte under the cap? Assuming you meant New Orleans...they are currently at $43 million committed, but that is before their #1 draft pick and with only a qualifying offer to Eric Gordon. So, closer to $49 million counting Davis, and then presumably Eric Gordon will get more than $5 million from someone unless he plays out the season on the QO in order to become unrestricted. For the 2013 offseason though, They'd have Davis, Jason Smith ($2.5 million), and anyone else they draft or sign this year. If they sign Gordon, they'll be sitting at ~$20 million, total, and could offer 2 max deals. They have another $10 million in Team Option players that year they might keep, but at ~$30 million there's almost room for 2 max deals, and they can be choosy about who's options they pick up or how they structure Gordon's deal.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) Why? You trade a very good lefty reliever for a broken down 3B man. I don't see the grass being greener with this trade. If we had need of a 1b/DH, I'd be ready and willing to consider Youkilis for Thornton with how the contracts sit. I just don't think his body will take playing 3b. I didn't think so last year when they traded for Gonzalez and moved him back, and now he's just about where you'd expect him to be.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) This is a state-level trial for now. Crossing state borders would have to be a federal charge, if I understand it correctly. You do. And the Feds have already made noise about bringing charges against him. If he's in jail for life thanks to the state they probably won't bother, but it sure seems like they probably have a case sitting there waiting.

KW whining about (OK bringing up) attendance again

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 01:54 PM) The question should be has KW maxed out the talent level with the resources provided?I think the obvious answer is no. Then a logical next question might be "Why", and if part of that answer involves "He was told to keep a manager who had already quit on the team"...then you have a much more complicated situation. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) Here is a little secret, we wouldn't be anywhere near first place without him, and someone like John Danks out there. Attendance would most likely be worse if Rios wasn't on this team because we would be significantly further out of first place. I agree, this team would be significantly worse if John Danks was the starting RF. (I think that's the 2nd time I've caught you on this one ) -
Something has to be done to improve the rotation

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 06:15 AM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,2642783.column The inevitable "maybe we should bring Mark Buehrle back" column by Phil Rogers. Well, the Marlins will be trying to trade him either this offseason or next year, so it's at least an option if we want to light money on fire. -
Of course, what's the other side of this issue that isn't being asked? Why do nations as a whole have health care systems? Why do they educate children? Is it out of the good of their hearts? No. Of course the reason why you have those systems in the first place is that they enable the economy as a whole. A person sprains a wrist, they go to the doctor and can quickly resume working. A child spends 15 years in school and becomes a...get this...productive member of society. So yes, there are costs to providing health care to people. But the reason why this argument failed in 1830 and the reason why it fails now...is that there are also benefits. A workforce can't get by solely based on wealthy investors founding hedge funds for their kids.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 12:49 PM) Was there every really any chance that he would? I still don't know how he could possibly have a successful defense without him on the stand, unless the old "protect penn state" happens to the jury.l

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:52 AM) The problem is that you are unwilling to accept that market forces work more than one way. As long as we have a massive social structure in place, there is a cost to immigration that wasn't here generations ago. The rest of the post just isn't true. Of course those costs weren't here generations ago. That's why no one in their right mind argued that the costs of dealing with new immigrants would be excessive a century and a half ago and it's impossible for me to simply google quotes to that effect. The arguments really have always been the same. They'll bring crime, disease, and poverty, and something new about this generation will make it worse than the last generation.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 05:15 PM) Not if an employer doesn't ask for it and the work is undocumented, e.g. contractors picking up day-laborers outside of Home Depot and paying cash. Ditto sweatshops that are already breaking the law anyway.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) Mil - Sale, Humber, Quintana Min- Peavy, Floyd, Sale NY- Humber, Quintana, Peavy, Floyd Tex- Sale, Humber, Quintana Tor- Peavy, Floyd, Sale Wouldn't be surprised if Axelrod started the last game before the break, and give Sale an inning in the All-Star Game, and more rest before his first second half start. But really, if Humber sucks on Saturday, he should be out of the rotation and let Axelrod start. And if they decide to send Humber down and bring up Bruney or Heath, fine with me. I don't believe Humber can be sent down without passing through waivers, and frankly I wouldn't expect him to pass through waivers unclaimed.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 04:54 PM) Fast and Furious was hardly 'lack of doing anything'. It was a complete setup to try and make guns seem worse than they are to advance his own agenda. And it got people killed, including American border patrol agents. Which is why the Bush administration started it. To make guns seem bad.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 04:50 PM) There needs to be a line drawn at some point, but I don't know when it will be either. Maybe after the All-Star break. I would have thought they would have done it by now, but that perfect game looms in the background. You always hope he can turn it around I know it's only a few weeks, but I think he'd be on pace for 4 more starts before the break. It'd be hard for me to see how you could keep putting him out there if he gives up 8 runs a start. He'd wind up getting a start a series, so the Brewers, Yankees, Rangers, and Blue Jays would be his opponents.

John Danks diagnosed with a grade 1 scapula tear
Balta1701 replied to Baron's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2012 -> 02:44 PM) Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien White Sox announce that John Danks "strained" the subscapularis muscle in his left shoulder. No tear. Better news. Isn't the meaning on those basically identical? A severe strain = a moderate tear?
