  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) Thornton was horrid as a closer. When he was returned to his familiar role he responded. His ERA was 2.45 after a terrible April. Its amazing how many people think he basically sucks. He's still among the premier set up men in baseball, and those guys are very valuable the way the game is managed today. He was horrible as a closer, but no small part of that was because Juan Pierre can't catch the ball. He was 2nd on the team in unearned runs given up this year because his defense screwed him. He's definitely valuable, but I think that with this contract, this is just about his value.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) Unreal. Where are we? China? If I recall from the Egypt experience correctly, the canisters are probably proudly made in the USA.
  3. I like how the danger to the police from the protesters here is so immediate that the policeman calmly steps over the protestors before unleashing the mace. And it's nice when the explanation appears laughable based on the video.
  4. Can't keep track of all of the divisions/titles/champions in single states any more.
  5. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:10 AM) http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/68730.html Could belong in the Filibuster, but hey there's some NBAish basketball for you guys. Really, an NBA player official fundraiser, that's a new one.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) MOre at link http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf...rnet_forum.html So who knew about this enough to leak it to some internet forum, and why wasn't it Soxtalk?
  7. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:33 PM) I want Buehrle back however can the White Sox afford it? Those huge contracts to Rios, Peavy, and Dunn are huge financial drains. And isn't Danks pretty much going to put up similar numbers to Buehrle? You have a younger version of Buehrle in the same price range. Unless JR is still willing to open up the pocketbook. Then, I would love to keep Buehrle, Floyd, and Danks. That is fairly reliable trio and then we have enough depth of starters to fill in the final two starter holes. I think the Sox can afford Buehrle, but the problem is, if the Sox are looking at committing to a 2+ year rebuilding process, then spending $45 million on Mark! for the next 3 years is just not a good investment. Plus, there's a real good chance dnaks is gone. He may put up numbers similar to Mark!, but he's going to get a contract twice as big.
  8. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 02:49 PM) http://www.throughthefencebaseball.com/why...quentin/13851/# BLOG SPECULATION: Quentin to the Padres? Anyone for us to target in San Diego? They picked up some real talent in the Adrian Gonzalez deal, getting even one piece of that back could cover it. Problem is, I have zero idea why the Padres would want Carlos. 1 year from FA, somewhat expensive, not going to put them over the hump this year. Would be a bad move from their side.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 10:53 AM) Trade Dunn and Rios
  10. Great. Solid. Can't wait to see someone wear one saying "Torotno".
  11. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 09:35 AM) We really need to remove the humans from baseball and just rely on computers.
  12. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) Sadly, I think that the cuBS hit botton the last two years. But now they have a decent manager and GM. They are definitely going to bounce off their lows of the last two years. Have to hope that the Brewers, Pirates, Cardinals, and Reds keep getting better as well. lol. And Wrigley Field is still falling apart. Put some superglue on it. Its entirely plausible that the Cubs could be worse next year than last year. Lose Pena, lose Aramis, lose Byrd, another year older for Soriano. Of course, they could blow $20 mil a year on Fielder and wind up at the same place they were last year.
  13. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:28 PM) Kinda throw San Jose in there? I think that they are trying to get the A's to move from Oakland to San Jose. However, if the A's stay in Oakland, could San Jose get a team? Probably not, but San Jose is actually a pretty big city and probably has plans in place and there are a lot of technical companies in the area that could be good sponsors. However, SF is fairly close and they wouldn't like that idea. San Jose would have a better chance of getting a team like the A's moving than a new team but I thought that I would throw them into the mix. ' MLB isn't going to push 3 franchises into the Bay Area, especially not with how much Oakland already struggles with attendance/ballpark issues.
  14. QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) We send him to AFL, and he does great, so we don't protect him? Why then did we send him to AFL? If I didn't know better, it looks as if Kenny Williams is running the show. If I looked at other team's lists of players who went to the AFL and had moderate success, do you think I could find a decent number who weren't protected?
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 07:41 PM) That last post on the scouting report was encouraging. Seems like Thornton, who two years ago was money, should bring more, though. Or do we assume the Thornton we saw last year was the sign of things to come? A declining Thornton? It's not that Thornton had a bad year last year, it just looks that way because Juan Pierre can't catch the ball. But you're not going to get a huge return for him since he has a quite expensive contract.
  16. Remember, if a player is picked in the rule 5, then the drafting team needs to keep that player on their big league roster for the full 162 game season. For a guy who pitched 1/2 of a AA season last year, that's an iffy move. If he comes out and puts up an ERA of 7 in his first 3 starts after jumping 2 levels, you can't just hide him on the bench.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) i want to say Columbo had knee injuries coming out of college too I'm starting to wonder if Angelo is targeting linemen who he thinks have a chance to be top flight linemen, but he's always in the mdidle/latter part of the first round, so the only top flight line candidates he finds are ones who had an injury that can come back to bite them.
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 06:01 PM) I know it's the Yankees. But they've got, what, $30 million committed to Rivera/Soriano next year? Robertson was about as good as any non-closer in baseball last year. Assuming Soriano is healthy, they've basically got innings 7-9 locked up. Thornton at $11 million over two years would be a massive waste, especially considering the issues with their SP. Take a look at what the Yankees bullpen is bringing from the LH side of the mound. Boooooooone Logan. Looking at a world of Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Hamilton, etc., they could have used an other bullpen lefty this year.
  19. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 05:52 PM) I still get heartburn when I reminisce about the world beater prospects the Yankees graciously sent in exchange for Swisher. They took on over $20 million for him.
  20. On the off chance this does happen, it seems to make "Moving AJ" much more of a priority.
  21. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) If McQueary did talk to campus police there may be a slim chance that any records were trashed as part of a coverup. However, my opinion is he never went to police. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) I wouldn't even call it a slim chance honestly. That place is a mess. The problem with the "Records destroyed" idea is that it assumes that the PSU PD knew what they were doing in terms of destroying them. Who knows how many documents are generated every time a person gives a statement. I can't imagine that having them all "Vanished" would be easy.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) That said, still unreal: Colombo: Out for the season in his first game, right? Williams: Out for the season his entire rookie year Carimi: Out for the season 6 quarters into his rookie year One problem with the last 2 is that both of them were injuries that the player had suffered before (I don't know about the first).
  23. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 04:44 PM) I remember someone (J4L?) being pretty certain this would happen towards the beginning of the season (Kershaw Cy Young). Good job. My knees still ache from buckling while watching a curveball that he snapped off in spring training 08.
  24. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 05:33 PM) And yes, Montero absolutely will not stick at catcher for the Yankees. The value is all in that bat of his. If he doesn't stick at catcher, of course, that dramatically reduces his value, esp. since 1b is kinda full.
