  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 09:01 AM) What legal document have you ever seen written in simple terms, in any industry? If I have a basic understanding of say, health...I can look at the side of a box/can of food and pretty easily figure out how likely that item is going to be to kill me. If I take out a mortgage tomorrow, I'm going to be 1/2 scared that the bank will find a way to foreclose on me as punishment for making my payments. Scoff at that if you want, but you know I can find stories of that happening in the last 4 years.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 08:55 AM) The size of the earth and the size of the pyramid don't change. Their relationship is always the same. Their ratio never changes, no matter what the unit of measurement is. How precise of a measurement and how long of a timespan are we talking?
  3. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 10:36 PM) Well a negative for society as a whole, right? The key was placing wealth in the hands of just a few, and being able to keep as many as what, 65-80% of the rest of the people in abject poverty? Negative even for the local areas...because the slave population was unable to participate in the local economy. Basically, it prevented the South from having any chance at diversification. The subsidy towards agricultural production provided by cheap labor meant that there was no reason to develop any other industry. That led to a lack of tax revenue, infrastructure development, and education, in addition to heavy indebtedness (due to the high startup costs of entering the agricultural sector). The North didn't have the industrial might to win that war by accident. It had that industrial might compared to the South because the South had slavery.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) You are missing the point. You don't have to understand every piece of fine print in a 100 page document like that. Your lawyer at closing is supposed to do that. What I am saying is, you could avoid a large percentage of the financial trouble people get into, if they simply understood the basics of mortgages, can loans, etc. I get what you're saying. As usual I have a slightly different perspective of the motivation though. In my view...most of the official documents put out by the finance industry are designed to make it impossible for an average person even with a good education to figure them out. That way, you can get a whole lot of people to take deals that are terrible for them without them even realizing it. From the other side...even if you know the basics like you're saying people don't...what good is that if you can't figure out how to convert the language in the documentation into simple terms like you're saying people aren't taught?
  5. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 09:18 AM) That's the kind of thing the Sox need to be concerned about. Let up drive up the cost for the Yankees or wind up having overbid the Yankees on a 30 year old pitcher.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) Just imagine world population sizes without wars and plagues... Wierd thing is...if there were no such thing as plagues...if there were such thing as human evolution...it would probably have happened where the average person would reproduce less on average, bringing things back into balance.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 02:33 AM) If you can get a couple of top 20 prospects, then by all means, do it. He's not getting any younger. I don't care how great of a hitter he is, if we're gonna rebuild, trade him for the right price. By definition...there are only 20 "Top 20 prospects" in the game. The number of teams that have multiple is likely countable on 1 hand.

If the app had more reviews in it, then it'd have been much more useful. There's just no content.
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 08:26 AM) I've harped on the bolded before, many times. It shocks me that people graduate high school in this country without understanding the basics of a checking account, credit card, mortgage, car loan, and basic investments. It doesn't shock me at all. Have you actually tried to read an understand the fine print on a finance contract? I filled out a couple hundred when I was in sales and I couldn't figure out at least 1/3 of the material in it.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 09:39 AM) WSJ increases circulation numbers by buying itself http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/oct/1...andrew-langhoff If the people buying ads in the WSJ don't care about the actual effectiveness of the ad in terms of purchase response, and also don't do any quality control on their purchases, why not inflate your numbers? All you're doing is ripping off the ad buyers.
  11. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 05:56 PM) A lot of the cotton that got around the Union blockade came through my area of the world. Once they shipped it to Texas it was fairly easy to smuggle it into Mexico and once on Mexico flagged ships, it was safe passage east. I know I was surprised when I learned that the US was about the last country to ban slavery. That gave us the competitive advantage, combined with Slatter stealing textile mill trade secrets, to build great wealth. It was also stolen tobacco seeds that started that industry and slaves that kept it going. Drop a couple bombs on Japan and invent a practical computer and you have the greatest country in the world. Actually...there are more recent studies which suggest that the presence of slavery was a moderate economic negative for most of the areas in the South where it was prevalent.
  12. One other thing worth thinking about...the demands on a player's time...not just on the manager's time. The athletic and weight training for (most) players has dramatically increased over the last 30 years, as has the amount of data and video available for a player. 3 decades ago, players certainly had things a lot easier.
  13. Verlander's at 96 pitches through 5. either he's going to throw 140 or the Tigers are going to need that bullpen.
  14. Cabrera gets the no one on intentional walk.
  15. This 1b for ST. Louis is 6/10 with a hr in this series.
  16. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 07:03 PM) I think Theo is overrated and the White Sox STILL have the best GM in Chicago. Both of them are trying to restart their own careers after massive, expensive failures.

2 quasi official interviews, met with 3-4 other schools, Shell bought me breakfast, doubled the number of schools I know about to apply to. Good week, I think.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 08:58 PM) He's already 36 and still has six years left on the deal? Ouch. If Barack Obama wins a second term...Arod will still have a year on his deal with thenext white house occupant.
  19. Rick Porcello should go on 3 days rest every time.
  20. Herman Cain now with a >10 point lead in national polling.
  21. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) Good post. A lot of people may not realize it but there are many baseball fans in Chicago that will lean in the direction of the team that is playing better. KW better step up his game. So this is entirely based on the assumption that Theo is a God and automatically instantly makes Soriano and Zambran's contracts go away.
  22. All of those decisions will depend on a new CBA agreement.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 06:10 PM) Cashman was never seemingly available. I'm certainly not going to argue your point as I'm sure that had something to do with it, all I'm saying is Boston has been the best franchise in baseball since Theo has arrived, it would have been silly for the Cubs to not look at him for the job. If I could steal any GM in baseball if have plucked the Rays.
  24. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 04:51 PM) He won two world series in 9 years, how would they not be interested? And yet I didn't hear them going after Cashman. They're paying a premium price solely for the "guy who broke the other curse." you know that.
  25. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) i forgot about theo quitting for a couple of months in 2005 and then coming back. He seems a tad full of himself. His failure here will be epic as the minion will not understand rebuilding. starlin isn't exactly a theo saber player. If Theo had exactly the same career record and performance, except the Red Sox had won the world series in 86, would the Cubs have been so interested in him? Would he still have gotten $20 million from them?
