Some Sox free agents
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) Unfortunately, if we need to cut significant payroll, then Frasor is a luxury we can't afford. If he were to accept an arbitration offer, are there any restrictions on quickly you can move him afterwards? No, he could be traded at any point.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:05 AM) Rotation? I suggested it once due to low mileage on his arm, but we need a closer, not another starter. Despite the "low mileage" on his arm, I think turning him into a starter would be a 3-4 year project trying to build up his innings.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:39 PM) How much can arbitration possibly balloon his contract? If Philip just repeats his 2011 season next year, I'd guess his first year arb number could easily top $5 million.

This is the article that COULD be written if Walker is fired
QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 09:25 AM) bump Really, out of all the fire walker threads, you bump a 4 post one from earlier this year?

Francona out as Red Sox mgr
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 08:58 AM) Apparently none. See Rios, Alex. Hanley Ramirez is on a big contract an his attitude got him benched this year again. Wonder whether theyll hire a manager who can instill sone discipline in him next year?

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) He gets Fs from Gun Owners of America and the NRA too. Looks like everybody hates him. Because the NRA cares more about the letter behind a persons name than they do about gun rights or safety.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:12 PM) Stop trying to murder the 2nd Amendment and then come talk to me about respecting the Constitution, okay? There's some more tu quoque for you. Barack Hussein Obama has an F in every category the Brady Campaign evaluates politicians on.

The Misconception Thread
QUOTE (gosox41 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:03 PM) We should seriously consider Terry Francona as manager but won't for a variety of no good reasons. Bob I think he will be seriously considered because if he wants to manage this year the sox will consider him.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 10:37 PM) Game 2 will start 1-1 in 2nd inning. Nova to pitch Saturday, Sweaty Freddy on Sunday. The big Q is when the aces come back.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 10:26 PM) If Kenny's serious about Alomar like people have said...I wish he'd just hire him then and get it over with...unless he enjoys the drama. No. Interview all 4. It will take a month if the rays go far but what do we need a manager for in October? If either guy blows the interview that would be a bad thing. If you interview them both and Alomar has the clearest plan for this team and so on...that's fine, but listen to what the others have to say first.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) What Soxfest said. That would mean he's arbitration eligible, which would massively increase the cost of extending him at that point.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) not after the ads about Rick 'Amnesty' Perry start to run Paid for by mitt Obamneycare romney? It's the republican thread but the daily show did a bit on this earlier this week. There's pretty much no possible person who could have met all the standards of the tea party and been elected anywhere.

QUOTE (Real @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:58 PM) why spend big dollars on a manager when your plans for the team going forward do not include the phrases 'all in' or 'going for it' Martinez will get paid by Boston and we'll end up with Alomar Jr Let's be clear here...there is no 100% obvious reason why Alomar must be a worse choice. The guy in Tampa has a couple more years experience, that's the difference right now, and that only means so much.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:36 PM) Agreeing to three option years and foregoing two years of free agency seems a bit extreme for only $8 million in guaranteed money. Can you even think of a comparable deal? IMO, Hahn absolutely raped Santos' agent with this deal. Longoria is on a similar deal.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:16 PM) Perry has no chance now. He might as well drop out of the race and save himself some embarrassment. I wouldn't say that at all yet. Dude is clearly still at the top of the list and he's going to be a force in Iowa and South Carolina. Mittens I think is just skipping Iowa and leaving it to Perry and Bachmann, which leaves a big opening for someone who can win that state.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:21 PM) Why any player would accept a deal with three team options blows my mind. I love this deal for us. Because Sergio Santos could get hurt tomorrow and retire with $8 million.

White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 09:02 PM) How many more years would we definitely have control of Humber including arbitration? Based on what ive read today he's on the same path as Santos and has 2 years of service time as of now. That ought to mean we'd have his control for 4 years, one more pre-arb.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) The more power Buddy Bell gets in this organization the longer it will be before they can dig out. Buddy Bell. Goodness there maybe less hope than I thought. Really, can you give examples of things he has done wrong? Because it seemed like most everyone who came up through our minors this year has had success.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:34 PM) Sure seems like there's only 4 total options: Alomar Jr., Martinez, Francona, LaRussa. That's it. More from Knobler: http://danny-knobler.blogs.cbssports.com/m...590096/32396533 Really, this is not a bad set of choices an I could be content with any of them.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) And, again, the public doesn't actually have any evidence of his involvement with AQ. We have assertions by the US government and refusal to substantiate based on state secrets claims. This criticism is part of the same line of classifying someone as an enemy combatant and then locking them up indefinitely, even if they're a US citizen. The Executive now has the power to completely circumvent the judicial branch up to and including killing a US citizen. Doesn't he have a substantial web video record establishing his affiliation with that group?

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 06:21 PM) If he passes that and manages to retain his US citizenship, it's only by the most by-the-book interpretation. Personally, I'd say living in Yemen and being in the leadership cadre of a fundamentalist organization that seeks the destruction of America falls under a couple of those guidelines. Namely, the ones about swearing allegiance to a foreign government and serving in a foreign military force. But that's just me. Al Qaeda is neither a government nor is it an official public military force. Adding adjectives like Fundamentalist or "Seeks the destruction of America" does not change that fact. You're right on the merits but the law here does not reflect the situation...if a law is out of date, the right answer isn't to get annoyed with the people pointing out the problem and then ignore the law, it is to update the law to reflect the new reality. And even then...there's an open question about what level of action is required for the U.S. President to be able to unilaterally declare that a person has sworn military allegiance to a non-state-entity. You don't want it to be too easy for the President to simply declare that someone isn't a citizen and then have no review possible. That'd be an enormous expansion of executive and government power.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 06:07 PM) He lost that status when he took up arms against the United States. In spirit you're right, but the technical definition of citizenship requires him to swear allegiance to a foreign government. It really does seem like there's reason to amend the law as it stands here to reflect this particular circumstance. If nothing else, some sort of (Brief) judicial review of the executive branch's claims that he has taken up arms against the U.S. and a rewording of this clause to weaken the standing of the term "State" appears to be required.
