  1. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) But that still doesn't tell me why he is so qualified to be our manager. Do people just hope because he is Maddon's bench coach that he will have learned how to manage?? Usually, the idea that a bench coach is "next in line" for manager is a standard conclusion by most teams. It's why Joey Cora's probably had a half dozen interviews over the past 5 years for managerial spots.
  2. Lets all think about things Tex should keep to himself.
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 08:59 AM) That's where I am glad we have well trained humans making those decisions. While no solution here is perfect, the best system I see is allowing the people in our government the authority to follow through on their responsibility. Of course you can pile up hypotheticals from here to China but my answer will all be the same, at some point we have to trust the people making those decisions. And that is how it has been from the beginning of time. It is all people making decisions, including what was written in the Constitution. We do not allow people to decide to ignore the law. We have rule of law in this country. We send people to jail for violating laws that people think are stupid. We execute people who might be innocent because we're following the law. The law is the supreme authority in this country. If the law is out of date or inapplicable, you change the law, you do not ignore it. If Congress refuses to change the law because they decide that they can't afford to give the President a "Win", then the President cannot ignore the law, and the voters should judge whether Congress should be thrown out for failing to change the law. You cannot ignore the law just because you have a fancy title..
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 10:26 AM) whoops, meant to add: does anyone know what this "we are the 99%" thing is? That's the protest's slogan/tag, if you will.
  5. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 02:09 AM) It would be smart for the Rays to do this. Shields has overachieved his peripherals (although his peripherals are still excellent) this season and he should be a regression candidate come next season. Sell high while you can. Like they did with say...Edwin Jackson... Sigh.
  6. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm just assuming it must be Thanksgiving since the Lions and Cowboys are both on my TV in national games.
  7. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 12:02 AM) can we name even one player that attributed their success through Martinez's intervention. sitting next to the manager on the bench just doesn't do it for me - but i'm not doing the hiring If this was the standard...you'd always hire pitching and hitting coaches as a manager, yet you almost never see that happen.
  8. He might well be able to get a corner OF starting position in Florida if they give their manager enough control. (Yes, I know who Florida currently has as their startign corner OF"s.)
  9. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) It's also an ego thing. You think these guys don't know what everyone else makes? Athletes are competitive in most everything. Wanting the fastest car, the biggest house, the best parties . . .Again...the answer to this problem is to make it so that they also have the highest tax bill.
  10. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:46 PM) You don't really hear Martinez connection with the Red Sox job, maybe he isn't THAT HOT of a commodity. Plus Martinez is currently a bit busy.
  11. Oh, and let's not act like great situations open up that often. Usually managers depart once they're fired, which means they had a bad season with disappointments and usually clubhouse issues. Waiting for a dream job means you'll wait forever.
  12. Well, there's the Tigers pitching I kept telling y'all was coming.
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:33 PM) We'd have a minimum of four with Maddon, and he'd be a surefire Hall of Famer. I really hope you're satirizing Greg...I'm in the not sure if serious boat here.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:28 PM) I don't mean to flame, but why would a hot prospect like Martinez pick Chicago when he's got KW as GM and Dunn/Rios/Peavy problem hamering the ability to acquire guys who can uh, play the game? Why wouldn't good managers wait for a better situation? Sox job isn't really attractive with KW supplying the players IMO. There are 30 of those jobs available total in the world. They pay a million dollar salary. 25 will probably stay filled. Out of the teams with high payrolls, you get to choose...Lackey and Crawford's awful contracts, Soriano and Zambrano's awful contracts, or Dunn/Rios.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 10:22 PM) Son of a b****. That both makes me angry and makes me worry about our choice this time. We still have a trophy.
  16. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 08:56 PM) I can enjoy the best of beers with beer snobs, but if Im just getting s***ty Im drinking Keystone Light all day (or whatever else comes in a 30 rack for less than $15). As long as you didn't pay $50 for it, hit it cleanup for a good portion of August, and pretend that you didn't have better beer sitting on the bench hitting home runs every time it gets an at bat.

    Congrats? Whatcha doin?
  18. The Rays are out for revenge for last year.
  19. Verlander threw 25 last night, 14 strieks/11 balls.
  20. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Well put. I only have issue if he isn't given the opportunity to maximize his value as a starting pitcher. I think it's really obvious, especially with Sergio now signed...that he'll be given the chance next year. The question now is whether or not having a year in the bullpen will have done real damage to him. If he starts for the majority of next year he's 100% guaranteed to be #1 on the "Verducci Effect" list the following spring.
  21. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 05:56 PM) Agreed. Theo may very well be on the downhill side of his career. If a guy like him is going to take that job, it has to be done with a 10 year plan in mind. He's not winning a title with what they have in the minros in 2 years.
  22. That's 4 more hits than the Reds got off him.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) Let him. He'll just be the next guy in a long line to fail in that place. They constantly make moves that get you thinking that they'll turn it around, but everyone comes crashing down to Earth. I don't think anyone really expected that the post-2008 moves the Cubs have made were on the "Turn it around" path. Or at least anyone who's not a cubs fan. Their big spending spree that put them in the playoffs, that did turn them around. They just ran into Manroid one year and what was it, the D-Backs the next year, and couldn't get past them.
