Sox vs Rangers game thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:09 PM) And when teams are looking for starting pitching over the offseason, someone will take a chance on him if they have to pay him a few million. Scouts are saying he's a #4 starter these days. His 4.82 ERA would Probably be worse than Peavys if you had him in the AL

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:05 PM) Out of curiosity, is Peavy the highest paid starting pitcher in Sox history this year? Of course

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:04 PM) I completely disagree with this. I believe saying teams soul take him on an MLB minimum contract is a direct line from Stark

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:01 PM) Would anyone want Peavy for 18 million? If they had to choose Peavy at $30 mil or Zambrano at $18, the league would take peavy. That's how little people want to deal with Zambranos act. Teams wouldnt even take him on an MLB minimum guaranteed contract

Was Rios looking at the third base dugout when he finished that swing?

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 09:57 PM) What are the Sox paying him next year, like 18 million? I'd gladly trade him for Zambrano. No one in baseball wants anythin to do with Zambrano.

Humber Placed on DL
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 06:32 PM) Seems to me that I'd call up the minor leaguer with the best chance of helping in the playoffs since he'll be playoff eligible if he stays on the roster through the end of August. Josh Kinney is definitely not that guy. My guess is he won't be on the roster come August 31st. Hopefully Viciedo can get healthy soon, because this would be a great way to make him playoff eligible and allow us a little more roster flexibility come playoff time. When you have guys on the dl it gives you maneuvers around that rule.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 05:39 PM) Sell some reserves maybe. Man, the crash you'd see in that commodity if any sovereign nation started selling its gold reserves...

Jim Hendry is out as GM
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 04:54 PM) Didn't see this post until right now. Right on Balta. I'm surprised more people, especially Cubs fans, don't see things this way. I understand how you do reach a point where you have to make him a sacrificial lamb for that fanbase to stay interested too, but there's no reason why he shouldn't be on the list the next time someone other than the Cubs is looking for a GM.

Worth noting though is that Congress would have to pass that tax.

Jim Hendry is out as GM
So if the GM who hired him is gone, is it a good guess that Quade's managerial career in Chicago ends this year?

Humber Placed on DL
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 03:32 PM) I follow our minors through this site and never recall hearing the name Josh Kinney. Kinney was minor league DFA fodder from the Cardinals signed back in January. He's 31, pitched a few seasons ago for the Cards.

Jim Hendry is out as GM
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:58 PM) Yes! And the former owner, Sam Zell. I can't say they "forced" Hendry to dole out those big contracts, but clearly their vision was spend a lot on marquee names, make a big splash, and watch the value of the club go up. Hendry wasn't the greatest GM in the league, but he was also a victim of circumstance. Link

Humber Placed on DL
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) The injury is for "facial contusion". I thought the same thing, but they probably need a true concussion diagnosis to use the 7-day. I'm sure if they're DLing him for a hit to the head, they'd let you get away with the vaguest concussion symptoms.

Is there any chance this is the 7-day Concussion DL?

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) Actually quick google search reminded me of the "age crisis" that existed until the 90's. The universe was thought to be around 10b years old but the same calculations showed stars at the center of the galaxy at 13-20b years old. Something was obviously off here. Further research led to new discoveries that solved the problem neatly and gave us the current estimate of 13.7b +/-. There was something similar with evolution. Lord Kelvin did a calculation assuming that the Earth was a sphere cooling by diffusion that gave an age of 30 million years, which he stated was the age of the Earth, but then biology was sort of saying "that's a moderately long time but that doesn't seem quite long enough for the full boat of evolution to happen." That went on for a few decades until radioactivity was discovered.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:20 PM) The revisions get more accurate and are within the error bounds of the previous calculations generally. I don't think that the estimated age of the earth has been significantly changed since the advent of nuclear physics and radiometric dating. It's been 4.xx +/- yy since the 50's. Same with the universe: yeah, it flucuatted a lot before we really started to figure things out post-WWII, but it's been a pretty steady 13.x +/- since then and new findings only remove margins of error, not shift the estimates out of the previous range. Accepting that scientific knowledge is always provisional knowledge has nothing to do with the "skepticism" people use to dismiss legitimate scientific knowledge in favor of mythology. SS is correct here. In fact, it's been 4.5 billion years since the late 1950's, when Claire Patterson (from Caltech) figured out how to do the first Pb-Pb measurement (his big work was creating an actual clean lab that was lead free. A side effect of him doing this was realizing that the U.S. was poisoning itself with lead, leading to the regulation of lead and removal of lead from gasoline.) One thing worth remembering...for a non-geologic reason, we actually know the decay constant of Uranium 235 and 238 pretty darn well. Maybe better than we know any other radioactive decay constant.

Indiana State Fair stage collapses
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 08:22 PM) Yes, and there was a warning 4 minutes before the thing blew over, but the storm itself wasn't there yet: this was a shock front out in front of the rain storm line. When the warning was stated, the people with the goodspots near the stage didn't want to give up their spots and it wasn't mandatory. Finally found the image I was looking for. You can see what apparently is correctly termed a "Gust front" developed out in front of the main body of storms in this image. It's the lighter blue line showing up in the radar before the big storms. That's the wind burst that hit this stage.

Jim Hendry is out as GM
I guess I'll be the one who steps in and defends Hendry's ridiculous contracts here. In 2006-2007, when Hendry was signing anything that could move, the Tribune Company was clearly planning to sell off the Cubs. Everyone and their grandmother knew that. Jim Hendry's job at that point was to maximize revenue, to show how much money could possibly come in from a winning team. Even if they had high expenses, it gave a revenue baseline that could be used in selling the team. Hendry did his job. He put together a team that made a 2 year run at trying to win a World Series. Made it to the playoffs with easy victories in the Central twice, and sold out that ballpark every game. Set them up so that they could ad additional ads and those sort of revenue streams. Dude was told to win. Not to win while maintaining cost control, not to make sure this team is competitive for the next 5 years...win for those 2 years so that the team could be sold at a high value.

5 worst owners in MLB
QUOTE (hawksfan61 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) I know McCourt is a con man, but how is Loria not #30 on that list? The guy has pillaged 2 franchises, and is a complete assclown. Because the McCourts could teach him a lesson on how to truly pillage a franchise.
