  2. Question for the group; does Rick Parry's attack on my livelihood here deserve to replace Bobby Jindal's? The Solar system itself started 4.56 U-Pb billion years ago. The Earth itself had coalesced as one of a hundred or so smaller-than-current-Mars sized bodies within 5 million years of that event. The Earth then grew by accretional processes as those bodies began slamming into each other. The final impact that created the Earth-Moon system happened about 50 million years later (largest error bounds are actually on that one).
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) In '06 Bachmann Staffer Was Arrested in Uganda on Terrorism Charges It's a lot wierder than just "Terrorism charges" if you read the article, it sounds like the guy was trying to be a bounty hunter.
  4. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 05:24 PM) That's what we get for letting him rot in AAA only to suffer multiple injuries and possibly ruin him before he ever got a chance. We clearly should have shut him down in Spring Training this year. That's the only way he could have avoided getting hit on the hand.
  5. QUOTE (High Mileage @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) An argument could be made that he's having a career number. Obviously he hasn't come close to the 29 HR he hit in '06, but nearly everything else looks good. Don't even get me started on his arm, anybody that runs on him is an idiot. Period. He doesn't seem to have much range out there, according to the advanced stats though, and both sites i've checked agree.
  6. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 01:32 PM) http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.asp...14_CUTLIN497125 I think Senator Coburn needs a visit from the Capitol police. It appears he's been threatening Senators. I'm not joking. Link
  7. When you look at his numbers, there's nothing a priori unsustainable about them, .310 BABIP, for example. And he was always viewed to be a very talented guy. But there's still the Atlanta years to contend with, it just took a drop to a .275 BABIP to make him a non-tendered guy.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) Or their own guns... If you're in Bear country, this is very possible also.
  9. IF he performs like this then it's a good deal. But his record of performing like this is somewhat limited.
  10. 15 day Dl for Youkilis. Sore lower back.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) Humber's a bad match-up against all of the left handed hitters in the Cleveland offense. Kinda disappointed we didn't shuffle rotation to have him face Texas lineup instead. Seriously, we're reshuffling the rotation now because of the powerful Cleveland lineup?
  12. Treasuries broke the October 08 low!
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) Didn't the restriction on firearms in national parks get lifted a few years back? It got stuck into the Credit Card reform act passed in 2009. Don't ask me how.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) So in the lower first round of the draft, 80% of the players picked put up at least 5 WAR in their career? That seems higher than I would expect, and it would be even higher if you didn't include the White Sox' busts. It might be even lower than that, I'm doing this one from memory. Might be even less than 10% at the end of the first round.
  15. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) I have no problem trading for younger guys (25-28) that are mroe proven MLB players with some cost control to them. Those types of acquisitions can still sustain a consistent winner, a balanced budget, and is less risky. The cost for trading for that type of player is enormous and they can still be risky. See: Ubaldo Jiminez.
  16. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 02:04 PM) Something tells me this is the real reason she wasn't nominated for the CFRB. Probably...but conversely, if she could have been confirmed for that position she'd have been nominated long ago and this wouldn't be an issue. That'd actually put a smile on my face, they block her from becoming CFPB head and it costs them a Senate seat.
  17. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 02:06 PM) Ozzie actually looking at stats and seeing that Quentin sucks against Masterson? Quentin hasn't seemed effective in a while, hitting 4 for his last 26. Offday for him is needed.
  18. Some cheerful news for this thread. Elizabeth Warren has opened an exploratory committee for a run at Scott Brown's Massachusetts Senate Seat.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 01:23 PM) I agree with this. How many of these draft picks are even gonna sniff the major leagues, let alone be productive? I don't remember if I read this or looked myself, but if you go to the top 10 Baseball America prospects every year, and pretty much ask "Which of them put up 5 WAR or more over their careers" you wind up with about a 40-50% bust rate in the top 10 prospects. That means to me that the top 5 picks in the draft probably have a higher than 50% bust rate (with some Strasburg like notable exceptions). By the time you're at the back of the first round, it's gotta be lower than 20%.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) I watched on & off last night, so I must have missed those. Good to hear, hope he can look OK tonight. #WhiteSox' Dunn batting .313 (10 for 32) against the #Indians this season and .149 (47 for 316) against every other team Don't forget though that he played the Indians in those first couple games of the season when he had the magic powers of his appendix.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) If this random crime is a concern, then change the law. I just don't see this as being a viable crime though. Seems to me these wacko's would want to hit a lot of people in a public place. Not an occasional hiker or two out in the middle of nowhere. There's also much less of a political statement involved if its a slow evolving event.
  22. If you really wanted to go on a rampage killing people and didn't care who you killed, you still go after groups that aren't likely to report the crimes. people who are already committing crimes and have little to no family or friends. Prostitutes, illegal immigrants, etc. Edit: No, I have not spent much time thinking about this.
  23. The point of the first question is there...you saw no one. For a person to be on a rampage in an area where he's not likely to be caught, he's not going to find many people. If a person were to go on a rampage in a moderately populated area, or in a hiking area within a park, etc., that's the only place he's going to find targets. But, the more targets, the more likely someone has a sat phone. Or the more likely someone has cell reception. Or, the more likely it is that the person told someone their hiking plan and when they don't get back, rangers go out looking for them. After there was an accident (not involving me), every one of our weekend groups who went out in no-cell-reception zones always had a sat phone with.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) Well yeah, he's a sinker-baller. No one likes you.
