The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 06:14 PM) despite knowing full well that he probably couldn't change a damn thing and that we (rightly) will do whatever is in our best interests as a country, consequences be damned. There are things that he could change that he is choosing not to change. The lack of pressure on Israel, the bombing campaign in Libya, the bombing campaigns in Pakistan and Yemen, the seeming completely ignoring of uprisings in Bahrain, Syria.

Sox scouting Brandon Beachy
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) I think the JP thing came up mid-thread. It certainly would be hilarious if they did want him, and I'd take absolutely anything of value to get rid of him. I just don't see Lowe being less valuable to the Braves ROS than Pierre. Obviously we wouldn't get any A or even B pitching prospects for him. If they want to dump Lowe and/or McLouth though, I'm all for it, if for no other reason than it gives us more depth to dump some more valuable guys after our upcoming 8 game losing streak. Gotta take a look at the contracts before you weigh Lowe against anyone. $15 mil total this year, $15 mil remaining next year. $21 million remaining through the end of 2012.

The official "end of Ozzie soon?" thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) I won't comment on this anymore, but I can't believe Soxtalker's have buried Ozzie the player. Amazing. He'd actually probably get a fair amount of props if he played right now, because of how defensive metrics are looking at people, but teams would be strugglingly mightily to cover up for his bats.

In Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball, the only lineup change I ever make is taking out Guillen and putting in the Little Hurt. Every time.

Sox fielding calls for Edwin Jackson
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) How dumb is it for Edwin to not speed the f*** up? His style of pitching is stupid. People can be successful pitching slowly. Steroids Betancourt has made a career out of it. Just because Mark! does the opposite doesn't mean pitching slowly can't work.

Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:58 PM) Well at least the bottom 50% of Americans who have little to no investment holdings won't be hurt. A huge dropoff in the dollar would be real bad for them though in this job market, since their purchasing power would take a major hit (this move would drive the bad type of inflation, inflation happening at the same time wages are stagnant or decreasing and there is large unemployment). That won't happen yet though. That doesn't happen unless the default actually happens. This will scare people who are investors...people who are obviously starting to get nervous about the Republicans here (see: the large list of business signees today who sent a letter to Congress basically saying "Get the thing raised".)

Children banned from restaraunt
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) Well you can still just go with bacon and win. Bacon on top of meat with cheese and eggs on top is tasty sometimes, but without grains or starches to cut through there, would get kind of annoying pretty quick.

Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:55 PM) WHY WON'T OBAMA WORK WITH REPUBLICANS AND COMPROMISE?!?!!! Got to think this is going to make tomorrow a horrible day to be an investor.

Children banned from restaraunt
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:50 PM) It contains some egg, right? or you could the bottom in butter first. He said "Serve only animal byproducts". Not "only things including animal byproducts".

Financial News
Multiple sources, most of them currently blogs, are reporting this is happening. This is entirely consistent with what Moody's said last month, when they said they'd consider dropping the status of U.S. bonds if no deal was made by mid-July (pauses so you can recheck your calendar). Edit: Here's a 2 line blurb from Bloomberg just in case you don't believe the Blogs hosting the statement.

Children banned from restaraunt
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:47 PM) Bacon cheeseburgers would fit the bill. No bread though, that's not an animal byproduct.

Jerry must be so proud

Children banned from restaraunt
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:39 PM) When I open my restaurant, it will serve only animal byproduct products...meat, dairy, etc...thus banning BigSqwert without having to actually ban him by hanging a sign that 9 foot tall Vegan Hippy Sasquatches are not allowed in my establishment! That would be some very unappetizing food.

Ames Straw Poll
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:39 PM) It seems to me Iowa is much less relevant for Repubs than Democrats. Bachmann winning would certainly legitimize her as "one of the front runners", but NH is the big one. Also, hasn't Romney mostly conceded Iowa already? It's less relevant...because the supposed frontrunner seemingly believes he can't win there but will own the state next to the one he was governor in. Really, you can minimize the impact/bounce that either of them would get from a win. "Oh, it's just Iowa, she'll only win one state, Huckabee won Iowa last time". "Oh, it's just N.H., they were going to go for Romney anyway since he was the governor in Mass." This might be a Super Tuesday setup. Your guess is as good as mine who will have the advantage coming into places like South Carolina. Nevada's probably Romney (Mormons), but I think Florida might still be in there as well, and they elected a governor more evil than Bachmann could ever strive to be.

Ames Straw Poll
Here's the most recent likely voter poll I've seen. That's a solid Bachmann advantage for only a month away from this thing. Especially since Romney isn't contesting Iowa hard and probably won't spend a lot of money to bring people in for this straw poll.

This organization is in disarray
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:11 PM) I think last season was the first year in a while where people thought the Twins actually had a chance. They s*** their pants...like always. In 09 it took a Herculean effort for the Twins to catch the Tigers then that incredible extra inning game 163 where they torched their entire pitching staff. They then had to go against a Yankee team the next day with Captain Cheeseburger on the mound out of the gate. It would have taken a miracle for them to have a shot in 09.

The official "end of Ozzie soon?" thread
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:13 PM) Maybe so on a bad deal for Beltran. It is getting intersting over there with the Mets and possible trades though. Beltran has been mentioned. Rios has fallen out of favor with a lot of our fans and maybe with management and we might need a new CF'er. Am I correct in thinking that Rios makes more than Beltran? I am sure the Mets wouldn't do that kind of swap would they? Crazy stuff There's talk from the Mets owner about cutting salary next year from the current $140 million range to nearly the $100 million level. Beltran is an expiring contract, Rios would be additional spending for next year.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 05:06 PM) Balta? But you all bought into the hype that he was somehow different. Same thing. If we could all realize the system is a failure perhaps we could fix it. Term limits whhhhhhhhhat? Would you really support the type of policies it would take for the U.S. to improve its standing in the Middle East? Ending overseas adventures, throwing support strongly behind pro-democracy movements everywhere (including Saudi Arabia), ending military support of Israel and strongly supporting a Palestinian state? You might be one of the "Withdraw from Afghanistan" people and you might have a problem with what we've been doing in Yemen, Libya, etc., but I don't think you'd be too happy if Saudi oil stopped flowing.

This organization is in disarray
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 04:54 PM) Quite possibly, but a lot of that might be contingent on whether or not he has control of the clubhouse. I don't know the more "inside" stuff with that team. I'm sure their expectations are higher than ours after winning so many divisions and always having the same results. It's time for them to take the next step and if they don't, I couldn't fault them for going in another direction. That is one clubhouse that has had some private stuff spill over into the public arena this year.

The official "end of Ozzie soon?" thread
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) I read somewhere were someone asked what Vic could do to get better and the reply was dump Boras as his agent. So on that I could see that if some organization offered a too good of a deal to be true for him Kenny pulls the trigger. If someone offered "too good of a deal to be true" then wouldn't anyone have to pull the trigger? I mean, if the Dodgers offered you Kershaw and Kemp for Viciedo...would you say no? Come up with your own fantasy there, if it's "Too good to be true"...no one will be mad. The worry is that KW will do something like Viciedo for Beltran, which would be a bad, bad, bad deal that might make the team slightly better this season.

2011 NFL Lockout Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 04:42 PM) All these posts with the Bears and the word "smart". Very confusing and unfamiliar. I think the current Bears FO has done a very solid job of playing the FA market. They haven't bought in on guys who busted big time, they've spent the money it takes to keep their own guys around, and they've allowed themselves to bring in upgrades when needed/available. It's the Bears' drafting you can criticize. In this NFL, you don't win very often through the FA market, you win by hitting in the draft, and maybe you supplement on the FA market if there's a good fit.
