Mid-Season Grades
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) In 16 innings of work... His ERA two weeks ago was 5 something. I personally don't like to use ERA for relievers, but I wouldn't even think much of it if it was in just 16 innings of work. Unless it was above 7. That just means you're terrible. Outside of ERA, nothing says Brian Bruney is a good reliever deserving of an A. When you're expected to be Randy Williams and you actually come in and give the team a good few innings you're going to get a good grade. That's the "wow, this middle school kid pulled a 61 in advanced vector calculus, we ought to give him a better grade than a straight D, he's 14" level.

Some truth to unpatriotic liberals?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) hmm, pretty sure we were! We're talking about his sig but not about the point he was trying to make. At least not directly.

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:41 PM) I am sure a memo was circulated around baseball for players to not throw balls into the stands anymore. I'm pretty sure if that happened it would have leaked already, and I'd hate to see that be the end result of this. I believe Hamilton said that he'd still continue to do so, just maybe be more careful. Hell, is MLB still having "Gold-plated balls" for the final out in the HR derby tonight?

Some truth to unpatriotic liberals?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:40 PM) Well, agreed with that, but he called him a "dick" But that's not the point of Alpha's sig and you know it. It's an "OMG! Double-standards!" thing that ignores a reasonable explanation for differing standards. 1. I don't care. 2. I don't care about the point of Alpha's sig, we're not really even talking about it. He's right that Maher's was worse. He's also right that Halperin, like most of the upper echelon of the "Reporting class" in the media are conservatives that Alpha feels the need to defend.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:43 PM) I think people are adding the qualifier "without doing other things simultaneously" in their minds when answering that question. I'm pretty sure that some of the Republicans here have said they wanted the government to default. Or at least they said something leading to that, prompting me to respond with the question "Do you want the government to default on its debt"...usually without getting an answer.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:39 PM) Draft pick, singular. Atleast at the current state. A sandwich pick is still a pretty valuable tool.

Some truth to unpatriotic liberals?
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:35 PM) But also I should add that halperin is a hack whod i'd support being suspended even if it's not fair to him. Yup. The less time he spends on the air/publishing, the more intelligent we all are.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:34 PM) Both sides are banking on the other taking the fall, though I'll probably lose all hope for this country if the "Democrats refuse to negotiate (and by negotiate we mean give us every single thing we demand, basically our entire party economic platform in one lump sum while getting absolutely nothing back), blame them!" line they're trotting out actually works. I was referring to this. I believe NSS and I had a discussion over the fact that I insisted elections were all about turning out your base and less about independents, to the point that base turnout decides just about everything.

I was more a fan of the first graph in that post.

Some truth to unpatriotic liberals?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:26 PM) Maher's an abrasive ass who has a political comedy show on HBO. Halperin works for Time. Of course there are different standards to hold them to, which was BS's point. I don't mind a guy working for Time calling someone a jackass. It's more revealing of his character than anything else. Only in our silly media world is that suspension-worthy. Just like with Maher's anti-muslim screeds, Maher was way over the line. I'd complain more, but well, I don't subscribe to HBO or watch his show, so no one would care if I complained.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:21 PM) Not sure but I wouldn't be surprised. Apparently he did. Well, that's totally inappropriate.

Some truth to unpatriotic liberals?
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) BTW, off topic but I love this in your sig: One guy is a paid stand up comedian. The other guy is a columnist for a well known publication. Granted I don't think Halperin should have been suspended but I'm not going to start comparing Dennis Miller with Ezra Klein. And frankly, use of those terms against the former half term governor offends me quite a bit more. Did he actually call her that?

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:31 PM) You're being annoyingly pigheaded. I have been to literally hundreds of games in my life and I have never, not even for a second as a joke, leaned over a railing. I'm not scared of heights (well I am, but the normal kind of rational fear), but I know that leaning over absolutely can result in falling. Have you ever had to make a split second decision between leaning 3 inches more and missing a foul ball?

Jerry must be so proud
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) How long will it be before the political correctness gods tell every orchestra conductor that they can't speak that word. Never. I can say right now that Adam Dunn's failure to hit is retarding the progress of the White Sox, and that is not a derogatory use of that word; I'm not using it in the sense of calling anyone stupid, I'm using the alternate definition of the word accurately.

Jerry must be so proud
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) Tell me why the word "gay" should be insulting to homos? Because people choose to use that word as an insult. Do you think that Gordon Beckham was complimenting Chris Getz, or was he trying to make a joke and denigrate him a little bit?
-
Jerry must be so proud
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 12:25 PM) I agree but the religion of political correctness seems to have ruined everything, especially the English language. Look at words like retard, it comes from ritard which means to slow. If gay means homo then what are heteros? Miserable? How is your life "ruined" by not being able to use the word gay as an insult? Or by the fact that you can't call a person retarded as an insult? How is the English language ruined when you have to come up with a different insult?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 12:08 PM) One of the most frivolous lawsuits in history? One that was a flashpoint for Tort reform? Somewhere like the 700th burn case involving that beverage from that company within the decade from 1982-1992, with prior settlements out of court of up to $500k before that case?

Castro hit on hand, leaves game with broken hand
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) Would it be illegal for AJ to hide one of those t-shirt cannons under his chest protector and use it to throw out runners attempting to steal? The Pride Crew weren't using T-Shirt cannons last Monday. They were throwing the shirts by hand, and could only get a few rows deep.

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) When you think of the literally millions of times a baseball player has tossed a ball into the front rows, isn't this the first time in history a fan has died as a direct result? In over 50 years or so of ballplayers doing this? Depends...do you count the fan who died in 2010? At Rangers ballpark? While Reaching over the railing to try to grab a foul ball?

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 11:26 AM) No, Balta has spoken. Because one man disregarded his personal safety for a $10 baseball anybody would. This is fact. If you don't believe this fact you're a liar. You really believe that the fact that it's worth $10 plays into anyone's reactions here? The only reason why people wouldn't do exactly what this guy did is that they've now seen it happen. We see people leaning out over the upper deck in worse spots all the time, they just have better railings at most of those. We see people fall over fences fairly regularly. This one was just in the wrong spot.

Rosenbloom quote
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 11:12 AM) You can also go back to the Billy Koch failed experiment. KW's fundamental belief in "stuff" (ironic, since Koch had lost his electric stuff due to overuse)...but that period of acquiring all those guys like MacDougal, Aaardsma, Masset and Sisco. All of those guys ended up blowing up in their faces...Masset, you can argue that he just never got enough chances with the Sox, but he's obviously done pretty well with the Reds. Gavin Floyd, Jackson, Peavy (at one point)...all with the "stuff" or arsenal to be "aces" and yet very rarely have we seen that out of them in 2011. Meanwhile, we've gotten much better results out of the Buerhle's, Humber's and Danks'es (until 2011) of the world, all things considered. Phil Humber was a top 5 pick because of his "Stuff". Matt Thornton was a guy that we grabbed because of his stuff. Bobby Jenks we took a huge risk on because of his stuff. Sergio Santos was out of options last year and we put him on the major league roster, where he had no business being based on performance, entirely because we didn't want to lose a guy with his stuff.

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) A normal father would do? I'm sure many fathers would have reached out with one hand while keeping one hand on the railing. Other fathers would have slightly reached over but did it carefully to not lose their balance. Then they would have said "Sorry son, I couldn't get that one. We will get another chance to catch one." There definitely could have been issues with the railing's height. However, that doesn't mean you can say any fan would have fallen to his death or that he shouldn't have been way more careful. And if you don't believe that an overwhelming majority of fans would have gone to just about any lengths to grab a foul ball for their son standing next to them...then either you're being totally dishonest or you aren't a baseball fan. Except for the person with a genuine fear of heights, everyone here who has seen that video would have done the exact same thing. I'd have reacted the exact same way as that guy.
