Final Shuttle flight scheduled to launch Friday
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 09:39 AM) Tropical wave rolling in, chance of rain at launch time tomorrow now up to 70%. I knew the whole time it was going. I just didn't want to jinx myself by telling Flax how wrong he was.

House proposes killing James Webb Space Telescope
If anyone has their Congressperson on the House Appropriations committee, you still have a shot at making your voice heard. Note...Viscloskey and Jackson Jr. are in the Chicago Area and on there.

Final Shuttle flight scheduled to launch Friday
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 09:31 PM) Also no real monetary gain for the losses. Itd be one thing if gong to the moon brought you new world riches like discoverers in the 15th century. Its another thing when you keep sending people to the Antartic to bring back scientific research. There's one other thing going on, at least amongst the actual research community. The number of peer-reviewed papers that have come out of JPL missions is usually in the hundreds. Maybe thousands for MER by now. The number of peer-reviewed papers that have come out of the ISS program, at last count? 2. They do interesting engineering projects and random test things involving outside contractors...but the level of science being accomplished by the Shuttle Program just isn't where it could be. Something that simply lifted would be just as useful as the current program. Edit: of course, by far the most successful science effort of the Shuttle Program has been...the observatories, led by the Hubble. The House, of course, just voted to kill its successor.

Final Shuttle flight scheduled to launch Friday
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 02:44 PM) Unless they aren't telling us something about how badly the fleet has aged, I agree totally. I don't think it's age. I think it's a combination of the fact that they finally are understanding that the shuttle is inherently unsafe and the fact that NASA's budget is already getting a major chop.

House proposes killing James Webb Space Telescope
The $6 billion James Webb Space Telescope appears to be on the chopping block for the current Congress, despite the fact that the Hubble won't last more than another year or two and much of the money on JWST has already been spent (the mirrors have already been polished, for example.) This would be roughly the equivalent of killing the Hubble in 1987.

Realistic Adam Dunn expectations
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 02:42 AM) "I promise you it’s a way better feeling that way than the other way," Dunn said. "I appreciate them, especially tonight, sticking with it. The thing about the fans, they boo and stuff because they want to see the team and me personally do so well. That’s how I’ve been looking at it. It makes it more special when they cheer like that.” We enjoyed that cheer. Especially making sure we brought him back out for the curtain call.

Paul Konerko not named to the AllStar Game
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 08:46 AM) I don't believe you can exhaust your votes in this. This is the perfect contest for this city. Vote early. Vote often. Get angry and vote some more.

White Sox winner!
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 12:40 AM) Like I posted in the gamethread, I was in attendance today. It was a very strange win. Great job by AJ to start off the 9th and a great bunt by Beckham to move him over. Ned Yost is a moron. If he would've just walked Teahen, there wouldn't have ever been the WP to advance AJ to 3rd. I'll take it. Sergio will be fine. Way to battle today, Dunn. I hope this gets him going. That standing O was unreal; it was like he got to 3000 hits or something. As for Rios, he's going to be the target of boos from here on out now. He is horrible. It's like he gets hits here and there now, but his new swing has no power/thump in it at all. It's either a single off the end of the bat or a weak pop out. The managers in the 8th/9th were insane. I still have no idea why Mark teahen came up to hit there.

White Sox winner!
Hi from 39th street stuck in ballpark traffic! Thanks Adam! We enjoyed the HR as much as the single! My first ever balk off. I'm undefeated in about the last 9 years at least.

2011 AL Central Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 3, 2011 -> 03:17 AM) The Tiger pitching staff has given up 51 runs in their last five games. And what 1, 2 by verlander?

How Will Dayan progress in his MLB career?
Good lord those are high standards. He'll always be a more aggressive swinger than those guys. that will keep his Obp down. I'm gonna keep hoping for a more patient version of Vlad. Others have suggested Carlos lee.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Jul 3, 2011 -> 06:33 AM) DA, ironically we already have our own MC Lite in Dayan Viciedo who I think will blossom quite well at the Cell. I just made a poll for fun about him. Hope you cast a vote. Not sure I'd describe Viciedo as "lite".

2011 AL Central Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) If Max falls apart, the Tigers are going to be fighting with the Twins. Not the way JV is pitching. The won't win the central without max, but verlander won't let them plummet.

Can the Twins win the AL Central
Nishioka has been hurt. You never call a guy a bust when he's been hurt unless that's all he's been. The Twins will find someone they have confidence in as a closer, you know that. Nathan would still be likely to return, IMO, just for a lot less money.

Ode To Juan Pierre
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 07:08 PM) That's not actually how the WAR stat works, but I'll take this version of JP any day of the week if he's going to keep this up. High leverage situations should matter to that stat though, right?
