  1. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Wow. Just. Wow. Yeah, it's silly, there's a reason deals like that never happen, it's playing with a hypothetical, but they're right. Humber right now is worth a ton to the Sox...which means they'd need to be blown away to trade him...or think that he's about to implode himself.
  2. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) Hawk talked non-stop about Beckham charging for home when Pierre grounded to the first baseman. I agreed that it wasn't a heads-up play, but he wouldn't let it go. It could have been a double-play, however, if they had gone to second...maybe. Pierre isn't as fast as he used to be. There's actually a real issue there...the Sox ALWAYS have the contact play on when a runner gets to 3rd with less than 2 outs. It's cost us many times under this regime.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 01:33 PM) FutureSox FutureSox.com White Sox 38th rounder: Keegan Linza, RHP, Liberty. 6-6, 225 pound senior. 2.08 ERA as starter with good control Mark!
  4. Just because you invented the typewriter.
  5. Honest...this keyboard design is bad for fast typing, it's designed so that the typewriter arms wouldn't stick together very often. People have designed keyboards that work much better for fast typing.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) I seem to remember that he only played like 20 minutes that game and it was a blowout, so Phil put him on the bench. My memory might be wrong though. My memory was wrong. It was his rookie year in a game against the Cavs. I wasnt even 3 years old, so clearly I dont remember it. lol Technically 1986 was not his rookie year, that was one of the first games back from the injury that cost him most of 1985.
  7. Fast typing is one of those things.
  8. QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) Durbin's proposal seems fair to me. It's a tax. It's clearly unfair. Just look at their reactions.
  9. If I posted something like that, the first and correct response would be "The market already knows that and has priced that in for months."
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) *sigh* Seriously dude, you have to parse everything to death. I was making a joke about his choice of words and examples. I'm sure he didn't mean it literally the way I put it. Me.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) I nominate this for post of the year. # of Games as a Chicago Bull where Michael Jordan scored single digit points (9 or fewer): 1.
  12. Doesn't that explain a lot.
  13. But it does make typing on a typewriter more efficient.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) The problem is that he only made 3 of them. It was probably a good idea he stopped shooting. He was having an off-day. The answer to that isn't "Stop shooting entirely"...it's "Get your tail into the lane and either force layups or create contact".
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) Time? Or money? And when I was in school these various programs cost like 50 bucks for the year. Even in today's prices that's less than the ongoing commitment cost of the "cheap" entertainment we're talking about. Kids don't have to go to $1000/hr private music lessons to do something more productive with their time. Well first, in poorly performing school districts a most of those programs you're thinking of don't exist for budgetary reasons. Am I the only one who remembers the "Midnight basketball" issue in the Presidential race in the 90s? And secondly, yes, you're right there are other options other than private music lessons...but if a parent isn't available to make those other options happen, then turning on the TV is what's left.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:38 AM) lol, yes this "crap." Seriously, what world do you live in where this stuff is cheap? If you're poor, can you really afford spending an extra 20 bucks a month for that HBO subcription? Can you really afford that 60 dollar video game? Or a smartphone? Come on... Compared to the time it would take to actively do the stuff Shack was describing...yes.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) I'll tell you what. White kids are playing club sports that cost money and require a parent without a job to transport them there. White kids are taking music lessons. White kids are learning foreign languages. White kids are doing all sorts of things that cost money. I'd agree with you but then I'd get called out for having brought poverty and the dismantling of the family structure back into it.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:33 AM) So ergo media consumption equals best test scores? Don't you think that is just a little bit of a correlative connection rather than causal one? But wasn't the whole point of bringing that study up to argue that the poor performance of minority children was directly caused by the fact that they're spending all their time watching TV or using cell phones/computers?
  19. There's also a complete lack of explanation for what White kids do with the 4 hours a day less of media that they consume compared to all the other minorities. That's the real missing element.
  20. Hmph, according to that study, the group with the heaviest media consumption per day is the Asian population.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:20 AM) So, 3-400 dollar video game consoles, 60 bucks a game, 100+ a month smartphone (plus the cost of the phone) and 20-50+ in premium cable a month, extra tv's for the kids, etc? For people that are in poverty? That's cheap? Really? Sigh. This crap again?
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) Does the poverty angle work in a study which is based on entertainment usage from TV, premium cable, smartphones, etc? Absolutely. Those things are cheap these days, no matter how much you want to lecture people on the fact that they're not. That's what you do with your kids when you have to work 2 jobs to afford the rent, you can't spend the time with them yourself.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:07 AM) Eh, I don't hold that you have to get power out of certain positions. If we have bats in the middle of the line up, and a nice complementary cast, I have no problems with not getting power out of somewhere like 3B if we are getting 75/80 type defense I'd also add that 3b is a position that has clearly changed since the end of the steroid era. Back in 2001, the Average OPS of 3b throughout baseball was .774 and only 6 teams had a below .700 OPS from their 3b spot. In most of the next few years, the 3b OPS hovered around .750 for the league. This year, the average league-wide OPS from 3b is .677 so far, and 15 teams have a 3b OPS below .700.
  24. Z Rays aren't even a thing, are they?
  25. Of course, the question that data makes one ask is why...is it that minorities are inherently not as good as white people, or is it perhaps a question of already existing biases imposing lifestyle changes, for example, due to the much heavier concentrations of poverty already in those communities? At least in my view, just about every bit of data like that which you could cite about how inferior the African population is winds up coming back to the fact that the population is inherently disadvantaged through the much heavier concentration of poverty. It leads to worse nutrition, worse development, worse health care, worse education, and keeps the cycle going.
