Sox vs BoSox Memorial Day Game Thread 5-30-11
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 30, 2011 -> 05:06 PM) Sorry Balta, but I think 2/3rds of soxtalk folks already evaluated this team. But, I still see around all-star break as the time to start scratching our heads If boston sweeps us, this rapidly becomes a total loss.

Sox vs BoSox Memorial Day Game Thread 5-30-11
It's Memorial Day, May 30. Memorial Day is the first legit "Evaluation day" we hit during a MLB season. This team is 7 games below .500, 9.5 games back in the division. If they don't win this series, it's just about selling time.

6 man rotation
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) Why would he be traded for a pittance? I think it's the White Sox struggles are largely turning into Danks losses, although 30-40% of the blame resides with him, obviously. At this point, mentally, he must be drained, and there have to be 6-8 contending teams with strong offenses who believe he could be the final piece to get them over the hump. He can't have completely devolved from a pitcher we'd sign for $75-125 million for five years into a pitcher who would be traded for a pittance in the span of just two months. If they do trade Danks and get nothing much in return, it's asinine. When you're paying Pierre, AJ, Teahen, Dunn and Rios the money they're getting and Danks is supposed to be some sort of scapegoat who will purge the Sox malaise once he's gone? In all likelihood, Humber will revert to a AAAA starter and our situation will be completely bleak. If they want to turn this around, they have to elevate his value somehow. It's not going to come from pitching out of the bullpen. Well, because he's 0-8, he looks terrible on the mound, but he's also a guy who has a good salary that other teams would take on. That's why. If we're cost-cutting, people will still take on his money for this year.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ May 30, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) I'm glad you guys agree about RIP. To me, he is also a very good 6th man candidate at this point, but nothing more. I think it would be nice to pick him up, but at the same time, I still think we should pick up someone else. Problem we're likely to run into is a combination of quality and availability. Clearly if we got last year's Hamilton, we wouldn't be getting anything more useful than what we already have, so we'd be hoping for an improvement. But, between the CBA uncertainty, the fact that we'd only have the MLE, and the other competitive teams, there's a lot of ifs. If we wound up with Hamilton and nothing else, at least we've got a shot at an improvement.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 30, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) Many people blame Contreras. Those guys all basically had the exact same injury, torn rotator cuff. Nardi didnt seem to worry too much about mechanics There's also likely a lot of conditioning and throwing regime impacting that type of repeat injury.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2011 -> 10:02 AM) So you blame Nardi Contreras for the slew of pitching injuries from 2000-2001? I think that's entirely possible.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ May 30, 2011 -> 01:28 AM) So how is this Danks debacle affecting his future with the White Sox and/or this huge FA contract he was bound to sign in the offseason. He was never due to sign a huge FA contract this offseason unless he was traded. It probably is making it much more likely that he'll be traded in the near future for a pittance, since his struggles are turning into White Sox losses, and if the White Sox aren't in this race, they're going to be sellers in June.

QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ May 29, 2011 -> 11:46 PM) Imagine how lucky the Sox have been. Many teams go through so many injuries each year that they need to pull up 4 or 5 pitchers from their minors. Amazingly, many of these teams have excellent pitching prospects that actually pitch well while they are up here and some stay! This isn't luck when it happens year after year. Its a credit to the training staff and to the coaches running things.

2011 Minor League Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 29, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) So Marcum > Danks to you? Not to mention Danks has no injury history whatsoever. Consider this post nullified. Marcum was in his first arbitration-eligible season this year, and so hits FA after 2013 instead of 2012 like Danks. They have very similar overall ERA+ numbers, with the exception of Marcum having missed a season. At worst, the injury part balances out the fact that you got him for another year, and now, you add in the fact that Danks looks like garbage on the mound...yeah.

Arizona requires you to carry your papers
QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 29, 2011 -> 02:02 PM) for repeat offenders? heck yea shut them down, and charge the owner with a felony. sucking at running a business is not a valid excuse to having an illegal operation. if you constantly hire illegal workers, on accident, you obviously do not have the needed skills to run a business. these guys are found guilty of this over and over, but they just keep doing it. the cheap labor is very profitable. FWIW, this would mean that every Walmart in the country would have been shut down by the government as Walmart was a serial employer of Illegals.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 29, 2011 -> 03:06 PM) Based on what? He has gotten no better the last three years and really struggles with his control. His average innings per start is 6. Thus he is a 6 inning pitcher a nice #3 and solid #4. No, his average innings per start is greater than 6.2.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 29, 2011 -> 02:55 AM) My boy toy Brett Lawrie was 4/6 with 4 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI. Now sporting a slashline of .350/.409/.659/1.068. This is the caliber of prospect that MUST be acquired if we're to trade Danks at some point this year. Well, then you're not trading Danks

2011 Pre-Draft thread
QUOTE (oldsox @ May 28, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) I don't remember Sox offering Mags that kind of contract after 2004. Could be wrong. But if we did, then we could have restructured the offer to comply with the rule that would have given us the draft picks, which was my original point. I agree that Boros' tactics stunk. When he did the European secret medical society trick, I didn't mind letting Mags go, I just wanted the draft picks, and Kenny was not able to pull it off. The Sox had offered Ordonez a contract bigger than that one. I don't remember/know the exact numbers, but the direct quote was that they'd offered him what would have been the largest contract in team history at that point, which means that it had to be bigger than the $55 million that Albert Belle signed for. There was supposedly a ton of deferred money in it, lasting through like 2025, but in terms of value, I think the Sox offered Ordonez something in the $70 million range, but after Maggs's injury, they wanted a physical before they'd continue to negotiate or renew the contract offer. Ordonez kept saying he wanted back publicly, but then refused to allow the Sox access to him over the summer, refused to allow them to view his medical records after the European surgery, refused to allow the Sox to give him a physical before the arbitration deadline, but was happy to allow other teams to take time to examine his knee after the arb deadline. The mess for the Sox was that for all they knew, Ordonez's European surgery might have been a complete failure and he might never have played again, and they had to offer him arbitration without being able to rule that out. Boras's people made it look like they had something big to hide (and Heck, he barely played in 2006 anyway), so they were asking the Sox to commit to spend about $14 million on a guy that they couldn't even see in person.
