  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 25, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) I won't vote for a terrible candidate who's done a crap job and stabbed his more liberal constituency in the back repeatedly for over 2 years by caving in to Republicans over and over and over. That Obama is inevitably better than whatever terrible candidate the Republicans will offer is not an argument in favor of perpetuating our terrible, doomed system. And not voting does what?
  2. Contreras hits the DL, Madson is the Phillies next closing option.
  3. Wikileaks/the NYT/the Guardian also did a document dump on Gitmo today. A summary: Turns out that wearing a Casio watch was enough to raise suspicions/get on a list of reasons why you could be sent to Gitmo, because that was the brand Al Qaeda used at the time. I'm wearing a timex now, but I'm not sure what I had then. Should I be scared?
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 06:54 PM) How about Josh Johnson? I believe that's 4 starts this year that he's had a no-hitter into the 6th. Also, Stanton's 8th inning homer is an absolute blast. Take a look at the increasing accuracy of Johnson's pitch locations this year.
  5. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Apr 25, 2011 -> 08:06 AM) A lot of Orlando fans are calling for Otis Smith the GM to be canned. He's done a decent job at finding talent over the years, but he's made some horrible trades and overpaid for free agents. I always wonder how this team would look with Courtney Lee as the 2 guard right now. He picked up Vince Carter on the downswing, and Marcin Gortat has turned out to be the best player in that 5 player trade. The Moves made by the Magic the last year or two have reminded me a lot of the moves made by the Cavaliers for the couple years before James bolted. They've got the ring of moves that need to pass judgement by a star, moves that are gambles that hopefully help you win "now" but may hamstring the roster a few years down the road.
  6. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Apr 25, 2011 -> 12:17 AM) I don't think it's that at all. I just really don't like Ozzie's managerial smarts. He makes too many moves that leave me guessing. I just think it's time for a change (and I have for a year+ now). Joe Torre is legendary for making moves that leave people guessing but then somehow wind up working.
  7. Something hilarious about this image to me. I think it's the teeth.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) I fear the Sox can't afford to pay Torre what he'd need to return. He's got to be bored doing whatever he's doing now. Supposedly both Torre and MLB are quite happy with the job he's currently doing in MLB front offices.

I'd like to say in advance...I don't care one bit about the Royal wedding, stop telling me about it, stop making me change the channel every 4 minutes to avoid hearing about it, just stop. Christ almighty.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) Drafting football players like KW, Borchard, and Fields has provided this organization with such great talent, I could see why they went back to that well. As a H.S. OF'er no way KW was going to take him with the first pick. The organization looks for quick fixes (college) in the first round. Yeah. I wish I wish I wish I could come up with a single name of a collegiate football player who wound up succeeding for the Sox. I feel like there must be one. Somewhere. Someone must have played football then had moderate amounts of success for the Sox. And probably within the last 2 decades or so. There just has to be one. If only my mind could come up with a name.
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 07:16 PM) Correct. You would not trade Mitchell for Trout? I must admit, I'm impressed here. I wouldn't have expected that anyone would have predicted a catastrophic leg injury for Mitchell early in 2010. Somehow you must have, because you're giving management **** over the fact that they didn't. I'd really love to read the post if you can point me to it.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 07:02 PM) No one wanted us to take Trout cause BA a few weeks earlier said he was a grinder in the Rowand mode. Oh, so drafting trout would have been a "Fire KW!" move.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 07:10 PM) Maybe I'm crazy, but I hold White Sox scouts to a higher standard than message board posters. And yet you have no problem saying that they made a mistake.
  14. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 06:59 PM) Bring in Lou Pinella or Joe Torre. I am serious.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 06:46 PM) Where did I suggest I knew anything about the draft? Do I expect KW or someone in the Sox FO to be decent scouts? Yes I do. You're damn right I do. What's troubling about your post though is that you don't see a problem at all with the organization taking Mitchell ahead of Trout. The only reaction on this board to the Angels taking Trout was "hmph, the Angels sure like outfielders, don't they?" The majority in the draft thread seemed to want Rex Brothers, hard throwing lefty who went to Colorado a few picks later and has been in their minor league bullpens from day 1 of entering that org. Here's the thread. Not one person here complained about the Sox passing on Trout.
  16. Man, the Braves and Giants are just trading huge hits for the last inning or 2. 3 run bomb by Heyward, 2 RBI double by Rowand gives the Giants the lead back, now Uggla kills a ball to tie it.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 06:13 PM) But the teams who were interested in him have also gone and paid alternatives, and Dunn isn't cheap. Which is why, right now, I think it would be only 1-2 teams that would take the contract on, rather than 10. However, come the middle of this season, where teams are in the race but have guys like Abreu or Matsui struggling in the DH spot, while other teams have guys like Hamilton or Mauer hurt, that's when those moves get made, and at that point, yeah, i could see 5-8 teams being interested.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) This original argument was of my post no one would give you anything for Adam Dunn right now. SS2K5 said 10 teams would claim him if he were on waivers. With whom do you agree? I wouldn't say 10 teams, but it only takes 1. He'd get claimed if he were put on waivers right now. Remember, when teams had to sign Dunn, they also would have lost their first round draft pick. If the Sox put Dunn on waivers right now, the other teams that considered him could get him and keep that pick.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 05:40 PM) Then they signed Matsui. Several weeks after the Sox signed Dunn.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 05:39 PM) Firesale is middle of this season. And middle of this season, whichever team is sorta in the race but has an opening or injury would be after him, and I'm not going to predict yet which of those teams will have an injury. If Hamilton were to go down for the rest of the year, then Texas could be desperate for a LH bat and know that they have money to spend and an opening at DH.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) And then they signed Carlos Pena. To a 1 year deal.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2011 -> 05:33 PM) A very interesting name that popped up during the off-season was the Cubs. Apparently with the contracts they had coming off of the books in 2011, they were hoping to backload a deal. At the end of this season, Boston, Texas, LAA, maybe the Yankees, if Seattle ever decides they have a competitive team, the Twins depending on what Thome does and what they want to do with Mauer, Oakland if they have a little cash to spend (Dunn is something of a Moneyball guy).
