  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 12:11 AM) 2.) Hopefully you agree Jones should not be a member of the Sox next season. Time to move on there. Yeah, I totally disagree with this. I wouldn't want Jones back being paid $3-4 million if someone else wants to give him that, but for a $2 million deal, maybe with some incentives, as a backup/part time OF...I'd have zero issues with that.
  2. QUOTE (wallyburger @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) At least it might be a thrill ride with Cuban. Cuban is the anti Reinsdorf. In what way?
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 09:34 AM) I wasn't talking about Sale. Then who's the trade chip you're talking about?
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) It is potentially tied to an environmental trend, I was just pointing out that the article was stuck on the oil thing, when in the end, it appears that was not the conclusion the scientists came to. I am sure though that you are right, its multiple factors. Ecosystems are just so complex, its hard to ever pin a result on one specific cause. I'm thinking more and more about this particular picture and it's really bugging me. This particular fish kill seems to be, as far as the people I've read are saying, something fairly unique. There are fish kills down there fairly commonly because of all the fertilizer runoff, but usually they're confined to smaller areas and usually even single species (basically it kills off a couple schools of the same type). This one is not only massive, but it's killed off a large variety of species; some reports have even talked about a whale being somewhere in there. In the back of my head, I really think something has gone haywire down there this year, and I think it's being missed by the "research" that is being done. The type of science that could and should be done down there isn't happening; there isn't money and resources to do it, so the only thing that we're getting is proclamations by groups like the authorities in LA that these events are not systematic and say nothing about the safety of the area...And I think there's good reason to view those official proclamations with skepticism.
  5. QUOTE (G&T @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 09:07 AM) The players will leave without talking to anyone. At least in the NBA, I'm pretty sure you're flat out not allowed to do that. I think they fine people for doing that. Plus...leaving without talking to anyone is a bad thing if you're trying to be a marketable celebrity. You make a big play, you kind of want your face on the TV.
  6. QUOTE (BearingPro @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 01:30 AM) I want to see big changes with this team. At the very least we need a 3rd baseman, a right fielder, a closer, a DH, another starter...KW has his hands full with this team. Anyone that thinks this current WS team can compete with the AL elite is dreaming. Why does this team need another starter? I count 6. They absolutely need a closer. I'm not sure what to do about RF and 3b myself...3b at least has people on the way up, RF has a talented guy who seemingly has forgotten how to hit.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 08:44 AM) I quite like the idea of going into next season with Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Buehrle, Jackson and Sale all in the mix for the rotation. Definitely should be a strength, or maybe provides a very valuable trade chip if Peavy is indeed healthy and back to form. The only way I'd even consider trading Sale middle of next year...if he's having a successful year in AAA as a starter...is if I'm convinced he's 100 innings away from the Tommy John surgery. Between D1 hitting FA at the end of 2012, Jackson hitting FA at the end of 2011, neither one having any reason to be extended, and Mark constantly talking about retirement...we need that extra arm. Hell, we could use a couple of them.
  8. QUOTE (wallyburger @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 09:11 AM) If I could only bust one, it would be Williams. Sell the club to Mark Cuban and start over. Reinsdorf's act is old and tired. White Sox fans deserve better, without all of the BS drama that surrounds this club. Yeah...because when I think of Mark Cuban as a person and the Dallas Mavericks as an organization...I'm incredibly amazed by the lack of drama. It's just jaw-dropping.
  9. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 01:04 AM) Floyd has gotten worse. Danks might be more of a victim of losing to the Twins before he steps on the mound. John Danks is simply a poor matchup against the Twins; his changeup makes him harder against righties when it's working and the Twins lefties always hurt him. There's really no sense in which Gavin Floyd has gotten worse. Just like last year...he's a good April and May away from walking away with the Cy Young award. His ERA is well under 3 since his last crappy start on June 2 where he didn't last 3 innings...just like last year.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 11:47 PM) We won't be saying that in 3 years about KC. People have been saying that about the Royals for 10 years too.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) UPDATE: The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries investigated the fish kill and determined that it was the result of low oxygen levels caused by low tides and high temperatures. And...why might I think that unusually high temperatures might be an environmental issue? (it's probably not just low tides and high temperatures, it's probably those things combined with all the other environmental calamities that are producing the dead zones in the gulf...most specifically fertilizer runoff. The high temperatures just encourage microbes to eat the stuff faster).
  12. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 02:58 PM) I guess if you want to go that route, they both stay. Team will win more game this season than last, without the production of two guys who produced a total of 51 HRs, 156 RBIs. They will come close to matching last year's production. So more stealing, bunting, giving up outs hasn't really hurt. The only thing that hurts is the team in your division is playing extremely high winning percentage since the ASB. On paper it appears Danks is improving but you have to question his mental makeup. Floyd is getting worse. The biggest improvement has been the fielding. Steve Rosenbloom made a good point about ignoring the health of the pen and let the pitchers play doctor. I'd still like to have those 5 games back the pen blew. Your conclusion that more giving up outs hasn't really hurt doesn't follow from the data one bit. If hypothetically we had a significantly better overall team this year than last, but we lost 2-3 games because of foolishly bad baserunning mistakes and giving up too many outs, the team's record could easily still improve. Furthermore...you quoted Thome and Dye's raw power and RBI numbers...while ignoring things like how much JD struggled in the 2nd half of last year...and the fact that some of that production was replaced by bringing in Andruw Jones and a better season from Alex Rios.
  13. Can we all agree that if AJ Pierzynski did this and it wound up costing a team in the AL East a game...he'd be treated as the worst villain in baseball history?
  14. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 02:31 PM) He also got to see better pitches batting 7th. Really? We went through this barely 2 days ago on the exact opposite argument...that Thome sees better pitches because the Twins have a better lineup. None of it makes any sense to me. You don't give a guy with a 1.000 OPS better pitches just because he's hitting 6th.
  15. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) Simultaneously or one at a time? Whichever is louder.
  16. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 09:08 PM) Nice job - that about sums it up... Not bad coming from the guy who's only been in the area for less than a year. Geologists...don't like to sit around.
  17. QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) exactly, we just bring up Span, Kubel, Valencia, Cuddyer, Punto, Hardy, Repko, Young from AAA and we're all set......oh wait nevermind, we don't have a farm system JJ Hardy came about by trading Carlos Gomez to the Brewers. Carlos Gomez was traded for the best pitcher in baseball at the time. Delmon Young was traded for a starting pitcher and a starting SS and then given 2-3 years to get his act together.
  18. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 02:00 PM) Hopefully he's seen enough to know it was a bad idea. Or how much is enough? Maybe Kenny will trade him behind Ozzie's back. Kotsay is the new Mackowiak. Only fans get tired of seeing him. He doesn't need to be traded, he just needs to not be resigned and allowed to retire. Or made a bench coach. Whatever.
  19. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) Isn't that what the organization is doing? I don't know. Do they play him at 3rd in the minors? He played 3rd in the minors the whole year last year. The Org moved him to 1st to start the year, and then he bounced back and forth between the positions, especially after his callup. It's entirely possible that moving him to 1st is the right move...1b/DH is looking like it will have an opening at about the same time as 3b, possibly even sooner if Vizquel is brought back. His bat is frankly, nearly MLB ready despite his low age. He has some weaknesses and some learning, but he flat out can hit major league level pitching. His bat is likely to be ready before his glove would be ready. That's the key issue, I think.
  20. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 12:42 AM) I'm jumping in the middle here without a lot of knowledge. What is the NCAA accusing Pearl/Tennessee of right now? What have they done for them to come down hard? Do we have enough info at this point? I know he misled the NCAA, but I don't have a clue what the allegations are. Bruce Pearl admitted that he lied to the NCAA in an interview with them earlier this summer, and that was enough for the university to come down hard once he admitted it. Why did he admit he lied? Most likely, because he was about to be caught in a blatant lie, and the NCAA would crack the whip even harder if he didn't come forwards. Most of the original discussion talked about some vague violation of the rules regarding not calling up recruits too much, but that was never made specific. I think we got most of the real story yesterday.
  21. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 01:46 PM) I wouldn't be ready to predict the sky will fall in 2011. I think the organization's biggest mistake was thinking the Twins would not be that good this year. It looks like the Sox were assembled to win a division more than a World Series. I can't see anyone thinking before the season started this team could beat the Yankees outside of "anything could happen". Kenny has done a great job of getting some to believe this is all on Ozzie. I doubt for one minute Ozzie was comfortable with having Kotsay play more. The money they were willing to pay for Damon hints at this. Really? I think this team was built to win a World Series more than a division.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 15, 2010 -> 09:09 PM) Christine O'Donnell: Anti-evolution, biblical literalist ignoramus. She called Mike a Senator? I didn't catch that part in my first reading. LOL.
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) We’re also establishing a troubled precedent of trading all our best assets the minute they make the major leagues. That’s quite the reward for the guys trying to work their way up in our system. ? Gordon Beckham, Alexei Ramirez, Chris Sale, Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Sergio Santos, Dayan Viciedo all say hi.
  24. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2010 -> 12:57 PM) Checking other Sox boards, that seems to be the verdict. I haven't seem him play. Sounds like the typical White Sox organization that can load up with future DH/1B. I'd love for the DH to be out of baseball so more youngster would be forced to learn how to catch a baseball. Sounds like Viciedo is Josh Fields III. Joe Crede was Josh Fields mark 0 until the Sox gave him time to learn the position. Alexei Ramirez was the same way. Viciedo hasn't spent a whole lot of time at the hot corner. He's a big guy but he's quick enough on his feet that he wouldn't be a liability there...but the thing that he would really have going for him is a howitzer for an arm. Overall I prefer Morel there if Morel can be an average hitter because he's almost certain to be more mobile than DV...but writing off the defense of a 21 year old is just about as silly as writing off the bat of a 20 year old in AA, as a lot of people did with Viciedo after last year.
