  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) they do get earthquakes. In fact, a former co-worker of mine just moved there. It's about the closest you can get to perfect. They will certainly feel the next big one, but they're not as vulnerable to a large event on the San Andreas as Los Angeles is, so that counts for something. A magnitude 7 in the hills could happen any time, but the city wouldn't likely end from that.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) That's about the right people to play against Liriano. Beckham should be higher, but otherwise, best case lineup. No Kotsay, and Ozzie noticed that AJ actually looks OK against Liriano last time out. Wonder if we'll see a PH for Jones if any of the Twins RH relievers come in.
  3. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 04:31 PM) When is the last time the Sox have retaliated against anyone?? When's the last time we could afford to give up a baserunner?
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) We need to go to the closest Shell station and have a gasoline fight near my jeep. That will result in some well done wieners.
  5. QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) Jones makes me wanna vomit Why? For a backup/reserve OF, he's done most everything that could be expected of him. Adequate offensively (lost some games but also key to a couple wins), and for the most part adequate defensively.
  6. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) I really hope the new CBA changes the draft. It would be much more fun to follow if they were able to limit slots. When is it next up for renegotiation? In terms of draft slotting, MLB isn't the league with the worst problem and I know that the league with the worst problem is liable to start its lockout shortly after this year's Super Bowl, so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out before baseball's CBA comes up. By that time, it's possible that MLB could have the most unlimited/troublesome draft contract system.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) Find me any manager, in the history of baseball, who used Day/Night splits to judge playing time. Find me a concrete example and I will bow down. I will bet you there have been more than a few times where some player has wound up on the bench for a game or two because he decided to pull a Miguel Cabrera the night before. But if there's any serious connection between that kind of behavior and those splits, the answer is not to turn your back on the behavior and only use the player in night games...it's to either get him help or get rid of him if he refuses.
  8. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:42 PM) Like eh..what...maybe two games better? More urine. Yawn. You can't yawn about 2 games back in a pennant race! ARGH!
  9. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) So would putting a shopping mall in the same place. Where's the outrage there? The several strip clubs in the area are less offensive than the Muslims.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) That's my point though. People are using all these national numbers to say how horrible the housing market it is, but what happens if you take away the west and east coasts? I know when I bought my house in May of this year, the Chicago numbers didn't match the national numbers. Prices actually increased a percent or two in a couple of the months. Obviously as a whole we've seen a dip here the last couple of years, but it's not nearly as drastic. I just wonder how much the "majority" of the country has been affected by the market drop. Well, the increases in "a couple of those months" were right in the period when the government was dumping a few tens of billions of dollars in to the housing market, so frankly, those really don't count. Part of the answer to your question is...you're right...in a place like Texas, which amazingly had strong state level regulations of mortgage issuers, there has been much less of a housing price decline than there has been in California, where the mortgage market was the old west. But even with that...most places have seen something of a decline...and even in places that didn't have a huge bubble, unemployment is still often shooting up because of the loss of industries and retail, and unemployment has really taken over as a major driver in the housing-loss market.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) Bigoted my ass. It's just bad form! It's rude. It's unsympathetic. It ignores a significant event in our history. So, I take it all that stuff about how "we believe Muslims are a peaceful people" and "all Muslims weren't responsible for this event" were just BS?
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) But at least Edwin Jackson has a history of success in the American League. Hudson, did not. Really? That's not exactly a strong argument there.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) With regards to the mosque story, was wondering if anyone mentioned the Dubai port thing that Dems were up in arms about a few years back. A few people have, and it is probably actually a good comparison.
  14. Whoda thunk I'd be constantly putting videos up of the guy who defended Bush in Bush v. Gore. (Ted Olson lost his wife on 9/11).
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:43 PM) There's gotta be a reason why nobody claimed him. As surprised as I am that the Sox didn't, I'm just as surprised that no other contender did either. The Braves? Red Sox? Rays? Well, the Red Sox have a history with him that isn't entirely positive...the Braves, OTOH, have a very positive history with him.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) So for the top 5 rounds, the Sox were 19th in total spending on bonuses. More than the Twins or Tigers (or Cubs for that matter). Indians and Royals spent significantly more. Cubs spent less than any other team that actually signed everyone, with 2,446,000 for 5 players. Don't you also have to account for the likely correlation between draft slot and amount spent, beyond just looking at the total # of picks?
  17. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:28 PM) Released. I mean why? Injury? Out of options? Shot his girlfriend?
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) Should we stop churches or christian community centers from being built near Planned Parenthood facilities because crazy fundamentalists have bombed them or murdered doctors before? I like the Daily Show's version. It's too soon for Catholic churches to be allowed to be built near schools.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) Has anyone seen a report that divides the housing market by purchase price to evaluate the drop in value? Seems to me that the lower level homes (0-250k) weren't hit as hard. It's the higher end homes that have dropped 20 or 30%. I wonder if part of that isn't location...for the simple reason that California was a major part of the price increase bubble, and 0-$250 k homes in Orange County are, um...rare.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) Looks like a fly ball pitcher who also walks a lot of guys, and he's 27. Why'd he wind up out of the Pirates org?
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 01:38 PM) The tid bit I read about this stated that no deals are close to being made for him. Kenny should be all over the phones right now. Why? We lose 2 more games and it makes as much sense to see if we can get anything useful for Putz and a few others.
  22. Something interesting on defensive metrics.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 01:18 PM) What makes those professionals "retards" exactly? Overuse of the telestrator for the sole purpose of circling fans.
  24. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 12:01 PM) He is left handed. There will be no lefties in there. Juan Pierre will still be in the lineup. I don't know about AJ, since G is on the mound.
