Mariners (Rowland-Smith 1-9, 6.27) @ White Sox (Floyd 5-8, 3.87)
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) am i seeing this correct. Mark Kotsay is not in the lineup??? Lefty on the mound.

Adam Dunn Trade rumor thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) That's why I said "if." But I think it's more perception than reality. Has John even hinted that having Jordan in the organization would play any role whatsoever on if he signs an extension or not? I'm sure he'd love to play with Jordan. But that's about it. If dumping Boras the day after we drafted D2 isn't a sign that it's at least helpful, I don't know what else is.

Adam Dunn Trade rumor thread
I hate to bring things like "Next season" up...but if you deal Huddy...you better have some plan for your 5th starter next season, because we've seen how well shooting for $1 million bargains can go (remember the Bartolo Colon experiment?)

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Yeah, that's true. Like I said, he does make sense for this team and he's surprisingly having a hell of a year (2.5 WAR). But if I have a choice of Luke Scott or Jim Edmonds, I'd take Scott in a heartbeat. You have to add the qualifier "assuming the asking price is the same".

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) He's due for a regression and I don't want him on this team when it happens. I think I can say this about 2/3 of the garbage players in the big leagues...he'd still be better than Kotsay during the regression.

The sleeper thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:39 PM) That'd be like a last resort type of move. Hitting .289, .866 OPS. I'd totally give up someone random from A-ball for that.

Sox make Frank Thomas team ambassador
QUOTE (IceCreamPants @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) Ambassador= FIAL Its just a made up title from what I seen. Its laughable....just saying. The Bulls did something similar a week or so ago with Scottie Pippen...probably in an effort to spit in DWade's face.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) Who would send him back? The Korean army. He's required to complete a year or so of military service by the time he's age 30, and he's just about that age, and they haven't figured out a way out of it yet.

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Why would the Indians trade Carmona? They'd trade anyone if you gave them a good enough package.

Adam Dunn Trade rumor thread
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) This is actually my -- possibly irrationally -- worry with Scott. After his recent torrid hot streak his numbers on the year are now some of the best in the game (.404 wOBA); well Luke Scott isn't that good, he's just not. Over the last 3 years his wOBA have ranged from .343 to .365, so my worry is that he's gonna have to bring his overall numbers down to around those levels (maybe a bit higher since he probably won't get to 500 PA) over the final 2 months of the season meaning if you trade for Scott now you could get some absolutely horrible production out of him while he regresses back to the mean. Mark Kotsay's wOBA is .295. What are the odds Scott will be that bad?

Beer Garden opening at the cell
QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) I agree completely, but judging by the "rendering", I'm hoping this is just not some lame excuse to try and copy the Capt Morgan club, without getting a sponsor to come in a do it right. Nevertheless, beers will be cheaper before and after the game at the Cork and other fine establishments in the neighborhood. You really think they won't eventually get a sponsor for the spot?

Wow, Pierre gets at least some DH time to rest. Thought that was unpossible.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:26 PM) And hence why we will see Figgins playing in Seattle for at least 1 more season unless they feel his attitude is too much of a problem. Would you take Figgins as a straight up waiver claim right now?

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) I'd f***ing love to get Stephen Drew, even if we don't have a spot to play him right now. The fact that the Dbacks attempted to stockpile pitching with the Haren deal tells you all you need to know about how they're looking at the young but struggling bats on their roster.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) If we could convince the Mariners to eat over half of his contract, I wouldn't mind having Figgins on the bench as a utility role player. If I were the M's, I wouldn't eat half that contract unless the return was something serious.

The environment thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) I think kap would prefer it if the whole idea of pricing carbon emissions went away. In that case...complaining that carbon emissions aren't being priced fast enough seems like something of an odd point.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) To be honest with you, if he's healthy and even half the player he was back in 07, it's entirely possible. I'm really getting the impression, as this drags out, that Thibs and the guys who were around with the Rockets think that he'll immediately go all Allen Iverson on the team in the first week of next season. Otherwise they'd be doing this.

Exactly my point. That's the kind of deal we're talking about for Ichiro. Since he's not a salary dump (even if I'm wrong and he only covers a part of his salary with increased revenue...he's still covering a good part of it, so dumping his salary doesn't save me that much money). If I'm Z, I don't even consider it unless i get a combination of Smoak level players and other MLB ready guys on top of it, and it'd be really helpful if I could shed a bit of salary at the same time. If KW held out and I had no other offers even close to that, I might be nice and let you swap out Flowers for Hudson if the guy you were taking back was Figgins, but you're overwhelming me if you want him and that's that.

The Republican Thread
You blasted Democrats, you're only criticizing Mel Gibson because you hate people of faith! Anyway...you're completely correct about the Holocaust being a unique event and everything he said being horrific. I'm just missing the connection about why I need to hear more about it. This isn't the first time Mel Gibson's gone on an anti-semetic, holocaust denying rant, and frankly it probably won't be the last. The people who care about such things long ago tossed Mel Gibson out the window as a bigoted, horrible man.

Jayson Werth
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:33 PM) No, he's really not. He's made some questionable signings (Ibanez, Polanco, and the Howard extension), but I don't know that he's ever made a questionable trade similar to that. I don't think I would have traded Lee away, but he was smart and kept Dominic Brown and he sorta reloaded his minor league system with the Lee trade. I was under the impression that basically all the guys they'd gotten back from Seattle were underperforming, and that Seattle got a much better (Smoak) package back for Lee than they gave up for him. Do you dispute that?

OK Shipps, let's be more honest here. Hypothetically, I'm playing Z. Here's my offer for Ichiro: Beckham, Hudson, Viciedo, Santos, and you take on either Jack Wilson or Chone Figgins (you get to pick). You give me that, I ask Ichiro to waive his NTC.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 11:12 AM) OK, so where does it say socio-economic factors are adjusted for? You'd expect them to be the same in Krakow and NYC? I'm sure you have a point, btw, and this is a problem with most journalism about scientific literature. That's probably an important point, I'm sure that the people trying to do the study did something to try to control for that (the work would probably have not been published if it couldn't get past that objection), but it probably has slipped past the author.
