Well, while some of us were watching the White Sox...it seems that a good chunk of the world's financial companies have vanished. AIG is currently one of the 20 largest companies in the world. It's seeking a $40 billion bailout from the Feds right now. The Fed is seemingly trying to dump money in to calm things down. Again. This is actually fairly remarkable. Within a week, we've seen the GSE's nationalized and seemingly seen the next step in what appears to be a nearly complete meltdown of the financial industry. There's some sort of one-liner here about the free market and limited regulation conditions doing a heck of a job.

Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread

"After 2 minutes, the replay equipment is not working. I waited the required 2 minutes and the equipment still failed to function. Therefore, the ruling on the field stands" - Scene from Chargers/Broncos game after a poor call on a fumble that should have been overturned. -
Well, hope things turn out well for DJ and hope we can get a solid presence in the radio booth next year...but I have no problem adding baseball's best color man to our TV booth.

QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 05:15 PM) I'd like the new President to slow down the outsourcing of work that's been happening. Here's the interesting thing...George W. Bush may well have helped stop that. The 2 things that have really supported offshoring of jobs is cheap transportation for manufactured goods and the strength of the dollar which made paying U.S. workers more costly. Now, thanks to our inaction on energy, the price of moving goods has gone up significantly and probably will keep going up for the next administration, and we've managed to print enough money that the strong dollar is now nothing but a slogan.

QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) I disagree, but only for football. Football is a sport that should be played outside wherever you play. Some people complained about the Super Bowl in '06 that now they should always play it inside, but I still disagree. Other sports however should have the option to be roofed...even though Hockey is pretty cool outside Well, here's the issue. How bad do you want the conditions to be for the Super Bowl? Rain pushed it a few years back. No matter how big or modern the ballpark, I can't imagine the NFL will put a super bowl in a place that might well have -20 degree temperatures on gameday. In 100 years, it's pretty likely that an open door stadium in Chicago could run with a super bowl, but by then they'll have to renovate the soldier field space ship again anyway.

Who do you think will win the November election?

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) i'll take it a step further... if you assume that 50% of these extra primary voters are newbies or didn't vote in 2004, and that McCain gets the same amount of votes as GWB did in 2004... OHIO McCain= 2,858,727 Obama= 3,246,023 VIRGINA McCain= 1,716,959 Obama= 1,743,781 if you drop the newbie level down to 25% of the extra primary voters... OHIO McCain= 2,858,727 Obama= 2,992,987 VIRGINA McCain= 1,716,959 Obama= 1,599,261 So IMO, if Obama can turn out the vote like he did during the primaries, Ohio flips and this race is OVA. The big flaw in this line of thinking is obvious. The Republicans had an uncontested primary. There were more than a few forces urging republican voters to turn out in the Democratic primary for various reasons (Both candidates and the Republicans all tried to do that). There is plenty of reason to believe that some percentage of the people who voted in the Dem Primary are McCain supporters. -
The Alaska state Senate Judiciary committee voted 3-2 today in favor of issuing subpoenas for 13 people in the Trooper firing scandal. One of those 13 people is Todd Palin, Governor Palin's husband. That committee is composed of 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats. The crossover vote? The Republican state senator from Wasilla.

If there is a 1 game playoff for the AL Central at the end of this season between the Twins and White Sox, it will be at the Cell. (sic) It seems no flip was done between the Sox and any other team yet. Boston won a wild card flip against Minnesota.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) If anyone is interested in the contrast, here is Gibson's interview with The Messiah back in June. The hardest question he got was somethign abotu Hillary. No asking about rumors or smears, no asking him about foreign leaders, all softball. http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Story?id=5000184&page=1 I'll bet you that interview was payback for Gibson's debate work earlier in the year.

Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) She still took a bunch of earmark money didn't she? Money that was given to her for the project? I mean, this is the kind of thing that can be spun endlessly in circles. And they spent money building the approaches to the bridge. And so on. -

QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 01:17 PM) Yea..but the huge problem with that is...actually getting those people off their asses to vote...sure they can sign up online or from a person on a street but that isn't going to automatically give that vote to Obama, especially if there is bad weather in their neck of the woods on November 4th. If the RNC is any sign, there's going to be a hurricane hitting the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia/Alabama on that day. Poseidon isn't done with the Republicans yet! -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) Also, I think McCain has a big gameday edge with the fear factor as I've mentioned. But the ground game, grassroots, is much more in Obama's corner. I think we've seen that in the primaries. Do not underestimate the Republican ground game...aka the evangelical part of that party. In 2000 and 2004 that was, as far as I could tell, their ground game. That's how Bush outdid his polls. They were turned off until McCain picked one of them as his VP, now they're back in the game. -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 05:13 AM) I don't think we should bail out businesses either. But I do believe when a "bail out" is in the best interest of America, we should consider it. Kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face. To say we should never ever bail out a business ties our hands needlessly. Here's my problem with that concept. At the rate things are going, unless housing prices suddenly turn around, it seems like within a year we might as well reopen Andrew Jackson's nightmare, the national bank, because the federal government is going to be the only bank left standing after it is forced to bail them all out.
