  1. That was an impressively fast resignation. Career downfall in 4 hours.
  2. He had the glove, he could do whatever he wanted. If he wanted to make the rules that it was random other than him, there was nothing stopping him. If he wanted to exclude planets he'd already killed, he could have done that (it would have been rather rude for him to hit them again but what can you do?)
  3. Honestly, no one else in our division looks that great on paper right now in a few years. Cleveland is incredibly strong right now, they have Kluber locked up for a while, but the prices on all their guys go up year by year, Miller and Cody Allen (so their bullpen basically) are free agents this year along with Brantley. The Twins and Royals have some guys who could be good players but not looking at a "surge of talent arriving this year" from either squad. The Tigers are a couple years behind us. For any of those teams to be really good they need to get lucky and nail some moves.
  4. And yet Rick Hahn's explicit strategy was to trade guys 8-30 to get bigger names for guys 1-7, for several years in a row.
  5. One of the tricks of a rebuild is that if done correctly, it puts you in position to "Get lucky". Yes, the Astros passed on Bryant and they picked up Arietta and Hendricks, but they were able to take advantage of those guys because they were in a position to offer playing time when other teams weren't. When you use that asset correctly, you are likely to find a couple solid players out of it. When you are drafting highly, it's likely you'll get lucky on something. If we win our title, people will be saying that we were lucky the Red Sox had Pedroia and that the Nationals soured on Giolito rather than giving him playing time to develop. If our staff is doing their job, if their scouts are doing their job, then we will look equally lucky once these guys pan out. If our staffs are not doing their job, then we will be wondering how so many talented guys flopped.
  6. FWIW, I totally disagree with the statement that the White Sox's moves made perfect sense before the rebuild because I was sitting here bravely at my keyboard saying that those moves were terrible moves, especially 2015 and 2016.
  7. The Indians did exactly the same thing the last 2 years. In 2016 they ripped off like 25 wins or something ridiculous in June. In 2017 they ripped of like 20 straight wins in the 2nd half.
  8. I think there's a licensing agreement they have to follow with these.
  9. "He can differentialize, if that's a word" - Wimpy
  10. At least I get to listen in briefly to Hawk and Wimpy
  11. Basically nothing. They have to wait until Mid-April of 2019 in order to buy another year of free agency. If he is called up any time between now and ~early July (the Super 2 deadline), his schedule will be: 2019: League Minimum 2020: League Minimum 2021 Arb 1 (>$11 million by that point) 2022: Arb 2 2023: Arb 3 2024: Arb 4 Free Agent after 2024 if they wait until after July, then you replace the 2021 money with one more year of League Minimum dollars but do not change the year he hits free agency. Basically waiting until the trade deadline saves over $10 million. Waiting until next April 15 delays until 2025. Same for Kopech.
  12. Brandon McCarthy, Bruce Bochy, and Amanda McCarthy FTW.
  13. If Yoan can't run at full speed then he shouldn't have been on the field. Not this year at least.
  14. Well, let's keep a note of this one because this is a negative mark on their record.
  15. The only way we're going to be able to afford to keep these guys is to pack this ballpark by winning a title before they are closing in on FA.
  16. If you look back at the records they've been making gradual changes for the last 30+ years making it extremely difficult to compare the unemployment rate from one time to another. The Birth/Death model was implemented during the Bush years, there was a ballooning of disability designations during the Obama years.
  17. Tyler Flowers had 15 PB in his last year with the White Sox and 9 PB last year.
  18. Your Bushes were ok with the same thing, and yet you deliberately avoided that. At this point there's 20 years of data like this. Someone who pays attention to data can deal with this if they know how to deal with data. Shame that "economists" are stunned.
  19. So seriously, you're quoting an article that says "wage growth is weak and people have left the work force" and you can't put those 2 together? People left the workforce after the collapse because it was difficult to find a job and because the jobs that became available did not pay well enough. As the labor market has tightened, people have slowly trickled back into the workforce, at a rate high enough to prevent wage growth. That's where we're at right now and where we'll stay for a while longer barring another shock to the system. These 2 "oddities" are directly linked and literally cause each other. We need wage growth amongst economists to attract a better class of writer for Caulfield to quote.
  20. Yoan is going to follow the standard arb progression of breaking Seager's record for arb dollars in 2021 at just over $11 million, then will probably be at $20 million by 2023 and then will be a free agent. So, we darn well better win our title(s) first.
  21. I'd even think about taking a chance on that...but I don't think I want him anywhere near all the young pitchers in this organization.
  22. I think he's on the way to the minors with someone and I dunno who. I don't know that i'd put him in our bullpen right now; his attitude seems even downhill from last year if that's possible.
  23. I don't know whether Machado, Harper, Kimbrel, Miller, or whatever else will come our way will be the guy(s), but if the White Sox do not make at least 1 big splash this offseason in the free agent market I will be seriously disappointed. There's no reason to do this sort of rebuild and cut your payroll this drastically if you aren't willing to spend what it takes to finish the job.
  24. After all that it's going to be the Cavs and Warriors again isn't it?
